Bad Moon Rising.

This album has always been a peculiar one to me. Not in a bad way at all. I can only fully enjoy this album when I listen to it all the way through since the songs all practically flow into one another. What's your favorite song on here if you had to pick one (minus death valley 69 and the Halloween EP)? Mine would be Brave Men Run(In My Family).

AbsentDadaSezFuckOff 07.09.2006 03:16 AM

This album is the shizz. It's the first one I got. My favorite is Brave Men Run too.

Good choice. Kim is great in that song and any other song for that matter.

CHOUT 07.09.2006 03:35 AM

Society Is A Hole is a favorite.

I remember being disappointed hearing I'm Insane for the first time. I thought the title was awesome, I imagined it having a similar vibe to schitzophrenia. I wrote my own version of what the lyrics would be like before I had bought BMR. I took a bus from my house in the suburbs to downtown minneapoils just to buy the cassette at Let It Be Records.

It makes me lie to my friends.....

Society Is A Hole is groovey. I love how that static sound that starts in Brave Men Run goes thru Society and into I Love Her All The Time. Not Right..............Iggy.

You got big big hair, and everybody's scared.

luxinterior 07.09.2006 03:52 AM

This may be my favorite album of theirs. Such strong tracks. I mean, I Love Her All The Time? You can't beat that. Brave Men Run is such an impressive song, I wish I had written it. More people need to love Bad Moon Rising.

I always bust out this album on Halloween for the neighborhood kids.

lovesonicevol 07.09.2006 03:52 AM

My friends all have big heads.

h8kurdt 07.09.2006 07:41 AM

The soundtrack to your nightmares. Probably my fav. album ie/their most consistent album. Except Justice is might though that just pisses me off.

I'm insane RULES.

Bal 07.09.2006 08:07 AM

love that album to bits but satan is borign is one of the worst sy songs ever imo.
favourite song gotta be intro + brave men (i love 'intro')

Fox 07.09.2006 09:50 AM

Bad Moon Rising is my favorite album of them - and my favorite album at all.

It took like 4 or 5 months till I really get into, though, but once I loved it once, I really loved it. Every song on that album is fantastic. I particulary enjoy Ghost Bitch, Society is a Hole and Halloween...

About Satan is Boring...

I was thinking it too until I listen to the song live... You should really hear it live, it's absolutely great... Now I love this track so much

Danny Himself 07.09.2006 09:55 AM

'Satan Is Boring' isn't on BMR. It was on the Death Valley EP. Geffen added a bunch of bonus tracks onto the same disc, which kinda ruined the effect of the album. It's supposed to end at Death Valley '69.

I listened to this album about 3 times over on vacation last year, so now it reminds me of the woods and mountains. Justice Is Might is really good, but I enjoy the whole album as one long song really.

Oh, and that 'static' is a loop from Lou Reed's 'Metal Machine Music'.

Toxa 07.09.2006 10:36 AM

I love all songs.

my favourite SY album!

nomadicfollower 07.09.2006 11:36 AM

I didn't like it much when I frst heard it, but since, it has really grown on me.
Brave Men Run and Justice is Might being two of my favorite songs.

finding nobody 07.09.2006 01:42 PM

my favorite song is 'i'm insane'. i love it when kim comes in with the bassline and thurston starts bustin out that rap shit

alyasa 07.09.2006 02:41 PM

Yeah, I'm Insane and Justice Is Might are really cool songs, my favourite ones off BMR. The whole album kicks ass, a sort of moody, paranoiac atmosphere from start to end.

toxic johnny 07.09.2006 03:15 PM

I recently renewed my love affair with this album after getting my old vinyl copy out and playing it really loud... it has a very distinct atmosphere that reminds me of a bleak and autumnal landscape... I just love the way that it flows from one song to the next... my favourite moment is the intro to Ghost Bitch... especially those gorgeous guitar sweeps and swoons. Another highlight is Justice Is Might... oh and I Love Her All The Time... damn, the whole thing is close to perfection. Not only is it totally unique in Sonic Youth's body of work but also you would be hard pushed to to find an album by any other band that comes close or is even remotely similar.
I think that I love it more now than I did when it first came out.

hey alex 07.09.2006 03:39 PM

I usually say it's my favorite to gain supah cred. But beyond cred ity's the only one that's always been in my top 3 so I give ti props where due. I recently got it back from ym friend and we smoked a few bowls to it in ym car. When we got to Im insane it was awesome. There's a guitar in the background that sounds like a little machione monsters clankin around and wreakin havoc. It can be heard else where but set to im insane's jam and thruston's awesomely odd vocal delivery, it makes for my fav track on the record.

Satan is Boring is about some kids who got fucked up listening to Heavy Metal and one shot the other, I think it's that whole thing where they put Judas Priest on trial for the subliminal "DO IT"s in some song. I'm pretty sure Judas Priest won the case.

cura 07.09.2006 05:54 PM

Il ove it I love it I love it!!!

I'm insane, Brave men run, Society is a hole, Flower...

Love every one on that album!!! x)

Washing Machine 07.10.2006 02:18 AM

Lol I was just about to make a 'Bad Moon Rising' thead! Yeah It took ages for me to get into this album, but now its definently one of my favourites. I love everything about it. 'Society is a hole', 'I love her all the time' and 'Satan is Boring' (I can see why some might not like it though) are for me among the best things SY have written. I can only imagine what it felt like when this album came out (anyone here old enough to remember it coming out?), groundbreaking doesnt begin to describe it! Oh and it has to be mentioned the cover art is mindblowing!

Cantankerous 07.10.2006 02:27 AM

my favorite is halloweeeeeeeeeen

Robo J. 07.10.2006 05:00 AM

C'mon... no one chose "Death Valley '69"

It's one of the most significant songs of that "era" for them. It changed them, musically. Not to mention it's one of the rare moments when there's a guest singer. It puts the finishing touch on probably their darkest, scariest, and forboding albums (I dare you to find one darker).

It's also a cool moment on the album. You have the first side a continuous piece of music (on the vinyl version), and the second side follows the same formula. But, right before the last song, it stops. and then...
(click, click, click, click) "AHHHHHHHHHHHH"

"Death Valley '69"

Don't get me wrong, the whole album is great, but THAT song...

wow.

For sure, Death Valley '69 is a killer track.........Lydia Lunch is another one of my favorite musicians, and her voice adds a gothic energy to that song. But I usually try to separate the rest of BMR from that particular track because I assume that most everybody enjoys that song. So when I want to know what people think about the album, I want to know what the masses think of the lesser known songs (in some aspects). Don't get me wrong.....I agree with everything you said about the track. It feels as though all of the previous songs are just anticipating Death Valley '69............and when it hits............It's a fucking train crash. Lydia's wail at the end always sends me shivers. True beauty destruction at its best.

sonic sphere 07.10.2006 01:09 PM

it's a brilliant album

eatmychild 07.10.2006 03:04 PM

Deffinitely my favorite album, I first listened to it stoned and it made me even more stoned.

gmku 07.10.2006 03:18 PM

A great album. Toxic Johnny nails it. It's got that late fall vibe. And I'm envious of the vinyl, you know, lucky bastard.

It's really great to play late at night, all the lights out, nobody else up, quiet outside. Can get spooky.

Yeah thats when i listen to it too! All the albums up too 'Dirty' are meant to be listened to at night. I Just turn all the lights off (apart from my pc screen)
light a candle or two and chill out in my room to 'Bad Moon Risng'. Its how its meant to be listened to :D

noisemachine 07.10.2006 09:38 PM

Awesome album all around. The music is amazing as are the lyrics. I think its one of the most varied albums (along with EVOL) in terms of being noisy, relaxed and rocking all at once.

m^a(t)h 07.10.2006 09:40 PM

great album, would have been even better if death valley 69 wasnt on there and satan is boring closed it...

noisemachine 07.10.2006 09:46 PM

What?! DV69 is definitely essential to BMR...its like the entire album sorta builds up to that track.

I was saying that same thing in my mind but I try to be as openminded as possible.

m^a(t)h 07.10.2006 11:10 PM

Death Valley 69 is too rock for that album. Very overrated. The lyrics are sort of lame....

I can see where youre coming from. DV69 would fit better on the Halloween EP I think.

noisemachine 07.10.2006 11:43 PM

Its a lot different from the other tracks but thats why I think it makes for such an explosive ending.

matt reeder 07.11.2006 02:13 AM

I Love Her All the Time is pure genius. I would give an internal organ to hear it live.

Blandkind 07.11.2006 08:15 AM

The album really is probably their darkest musically. The intro sounds mildly cheerful but after that it changes. It took me a little while to fully appreciate the album but I really love it. It has a truly unique feel to it. Also love the booklet with the shots of them in the woods
