I just bought a casette tape player

and a bunch of tapes from Digitalis Limited.

Tapes rule!

atsonicpark 09.21.2010 04:05 AM

Yeah, tapes are the best. I love listening to the tape player in my car while on a long drive. I still make mix tapes quite often.

ann ashtray 09.21.2010 04:15 AM

Making mix tapes is only fun, I personally think they are one of the most personal gifts you can make for someone else. I mean, you must actually listen to each song as it's being recorded, which require a lot of thought.

atsonicpark 09.21.2010 04:47 AM

My favorite thing to put on tapes is classical music, and modern classical like Harry Partch. Hearing this (typically) really clean, well-produced sound... somewhat degraded... sounds cool. Obviously, drone and ambient works perfectly for tape, I'd say 3/4ths of Robe.'s albums are on tape for this very reason, we specifically produced albums with the wobbly horns and tape hiss in mind.

Derek 09.21.2010 05:06 AM

I've been listening to my Pine Smoke Lodge tapes a lot recently.

Count Mecha 09.21.2010 05:09 AM

I want to make mixtapes for people, but none of them own tape players, can't even lend them vhs tapes, none of them have vcrs!

I love the tape player in my car.

pbradley 09.21.2010 05:17 AM

I'm going to buy one of the new iPods.

Derek, I didn't want to correct you over on Fangs, but I noticed you called an SCG album "dawn of the devil" 4 times. The album is called dawn of the devi...

EVOLghost 09.21.2010 07:38 AM

my cassette play in my car won't work. the cassette will go in, but no sound will come out. It just clicks. and man does it suck.

akprodr 09.21.2010 07:58 AM

Ya know, you can make mix cds as well...

_slavo_ 09.21.2010 08:10 AM

yes, adam is true, drone is perfect for tapes. that's why i'm giving Digitalis Ltd. a try, looks like there's plenty of gems there that I don't know of.
Plus, a tape is small, you can fit nice artwork into it, and it feels way more personal than CDs or even vinyls.

atsonicpark 09.21.2010 08:30 AM

I really should send you a tape sometime slavo. My schedule just never aligns with the hours of the post office around here (since I work 3rd shift and all, and am way too tired to go by there after work and it closes way before I go to work).

But yeah, I much prefer tapes to cd's. I am not really into vinyl (gasp! Shock!) -- I mainly listen to music in a car, so...

_slavo_ 09.21.2010 08:49 AM

you really should make me a mix tape, that might be more than awesome.
or, send me a Robe. tape, that'd rock even more.

atsonicpark 09.21.2010 09:00 AM

I would send you some Robe. tapes, but I don't have any.The other guy in the band keeps them all... but, on the plus side, he sends out tons of free stuff, all the time, and he goes to the post office many times a week.

But anyway, I'll see what I can do, when I get some time, I'd love to send to... Россия.

One year I made mix CDs for christmas presents. I used printable CDs with the mirror finish and printed a processed sunset on 'em. I thought they looked friggin' cool. I put them in DVD cases and printed up a list of the songs and a brief description of why I picked 'em.

ann ashtray 09.21.2010 09:28 AM

Bytor Peltor makes the absolute best mixtapes.

knox 09.21.2010 09:45 AM

YES, I love tapes.

ann ashtray 09.21.2010 10:19 AM

"Quality that is unique"...I like that, JB. Mind if I call you "JB"?

I know it's called that, the mistitling is just a force of habit.

Kind of a random thing to call me out for though, no?

SuperCreep 09.21.2010 11:03 AM

i bought a cassette deck for mixtapes/recording a few months ago, but i haven't bought a cassette in ages. i'm not sure if i'm feeling enough nostalgia to start collecting.

however, i did enjoy laughing at everyone on the bus in middle school with their fancy sony walkman CD players with rubber bands holding everything together. my walkman cassette player seemed to crap out a lot less and was much more simpler/portable.

nicfit 09.21.2010 11:20 AM

you should buy http://www.westernunconscious.com/ stuff :).

used, for 65 EUR, which is a great bargain.
Yamaha KX 393.

I have a Yamaha receiver and CD player, so this is going to be a match.

space 09.21.2010 01:39 PM

I just picked up a large garbage bag full of my old tapes.

it was years before I switched to CD's.

that said, I have no way of playing tapes anymore.

:(

flotto:

i have an old walkman cluttering a drawer in my apartment.

it's wonderful sound! i'll sell it to you for $500 worth of gold bullion.

it's, you know, vintage.

that's why I liked the concept of minidiscs, and I wish they had stayed popular, over cd's. Small and all that.

space 09.21.2010 03:45 PM

yes, but isn't gansta rap meant to be shared?

walkmen are so...personal.

you know you want to hear me rhyme along to some Compton's Most Wanted.

tesla69 09.21.2010 04:10 PM

I've been pretty much listening to cassettes for the past 6 weeks while I'm in a crappy temp apt while they do work on my bldg - my stereo is all packed away as is my hard drive, so I've been listening to cassettes on a boom box. The very first live tape I ever got, a Doors show from 66 at the matrix, doesn't sound any better but the tape still plays fine nearly 30 years later. The boom box speakers are fried, so I need to buy a new one, but I'm not even sure they make these anymore. The Cd player doesn't work too well and the antenna is broken off.

And I dug out several older Thurston nonSY ensembles from the 90's on cassette I hadn't listened to in awhile because they were from digital sources and I never copied them to CDR, hoping to find original digital sources. That didn't happen so I guess I have a project once I get my stereo set back up.

Cassettes are better in one way than digital because you press play, and it plays. With digital you have to go through a painful loading procedure.

atsonicpark 09.21.2010 04:59 PM

In general, I just feel more inclined to purchase music on cassette than on any other format. Being portable and not easy to just download and hit "burn" makes it very desirable... I'd LOVE to get some techno on cassettes... if anyone has any they want to sell me, hit me up.. I know Ceephax Acid Crew release toms of shit on cassette.. rules.

SpaceCadetHayden 09.21.2010 05:12 PM

I have some local dubstep and ghost house mixes on tape, adam. if i can find them(i just fucking moved), i'd be willing to send them to you for a trade or a few sexual favors or something.

atsonicpark 09.21.2010 05:39 PM

Might be interested in the future, hayden, thanks. A bit busy with moving some stuff myself at the moment.

SpaceCadetHayden 09.21.2010 06:03 PM

It's absolutely fucking awful that moving business.

anyways, to the subject at hand, i've always had a thing for tapes. My collection consists mostly of old punk tapes, harsh noise, and lots of them from not not fun. Tapes have so much more to offer as far as art space is concerned. I've gotten tapes in wooden boxes built for them and shit. when I buy cds I get liner notes. big fucking woop
