Nooooooooo....yeah I like it. It is what it is......even though I wish they would have been more ambitious with the album. I could tell you my whole life story experience with the album song by song, but nobody cares and neither do I. The first time hearing it was sketchy at best and it took a few listens for it to mold into my brain. Reena rules, of course.

porkmarras 07.17.2006 03:51 AM

While it's certainly not their best album or one they'll be remembered for,i generally tend to contextualize all the albums by Sonic Youth because they are a band that i allow to have that sort of luxury.Let's face it,i think they gave enough to music for it to be grateful no end.The Velvet Underground's 'Loaded' is helping me appreciate this record much more than i would have had if it was by another band as i hear echoes of it throughout the album(as well as a few late 70s post punk bands and even, why not,Siouxie and the Banshees).

krastian 07.17.2006 03:58 AM

Echoes of Loaded.....now that's a compliment! But yeah, I think I know what yr talking about....making a "rock" album while still being themselves and being awesome. I think?

Trasher02 07.17.2006 04:04 AM

RR was bad, i like three songs and that's about it.

I'll refuse to vote for either on the grounds that it is a young baby.If you don't let it breathe and move and get to know what the world is like,it might grow up really damaged. How about that,eh?

Erm...haven't they made 'rock' albums before?

krastian 07.17.2006 04:21 AM

Def. for sure....but this seems more straight forward "rock" especially in comparison to everything they've done for years....not as much "experimentation" going down....since like Dirty I'd say....hoping for more. They've always been a rock band to me and thank God for that. If I'm wrong then please elaborate on the echoes of Loaded that you hear......or don't. Just wondering.

Indeed.

porkmarras 07.17.2006 04:33 AM

If i wanted to be a little cruel i'd compare it to The Auteurs's 'After murder park' though.I finally got it on cd and,my,Steve Albini works wonders on production sometimes.hehe.

krastian 07.17.2006 04:37 AM

Hmmmm....haven't heard that one. More gays needed, of course....my drunken ass should seriously pass out since it'll be 6 in the morn soon, but fuck it.

I don't know what's missing but it shows nonetheless. You should give 'After murder park' a go Krastian.I'm a notorious Lennon-hater but Luke Haines does a great impersonation of him on that album. Also, where else could you get lyrics as moving as this?

The Auteurs FEAR OF FLYING
you may be wary of fallen stars
they're always poking around in the dark
the ariel view of a dying man
screaming out can you help me invisible man
you must be wary of ghosts in the dark
they know all your history they know all your past
all of the angels are doing their bit
clearing the house of your animal shit
fear of flying is eating you whole
i have no fear of dying at all
it's absurd that a silver bird
should have a fear of flying at all
you may be wary of who you short change
keeping the short-con well within range
the ariel view of an idiot bird
screaming out can you help me but nobody heard
you may be wary of ghosts of the past
sexless and incorrigible in the dark
they're making an ariel map of abuse
all of the a-roads leading to home

porkmarras 07.17.2006 04:49 AM

Or as funny as this?

The Auteurs MARRIED TO A LAZY LOVER
sack the maid - put her in chains until
she say's that it's painless and I
couldn't care less
twenty years
married to a lazy lover
twenty years
mixing alcohol and downers
sack the maid
for dealing in state propoganda
sack the state
what would your common lover do
beat the daylights out of you?
it's a national threat
married to a lazy lover
against the west
married to a lazy lover
i could teach him how to drink
but he just threw up in the sink
the man from the ministy
didn't have to say
that your lover's on the shelf
would he bite the bit
or split my lip?
anyway this marraige is annulled

krastian 07.17.2006 04:50 AM

Yeah man I'll check that out....apparantly Jonathan Ritchman influenced them which is always a plus in my book.

Or in anyone's book for that matter.

Oh yes....to much beauty for mere mortals.

It's Goo for the twenty-first century. Sort of. In a not really kind of way.

It's a good LP. I'd put Sleepin Around and Pink Steam (especially the latter) up there amongst the SY classic tracks.

Daddylikes 07.17.2006 07:04 AM

I meant to vote no...but Yes was the second choice.

I assume that's why there is only one no vote.

Pink Steam is really the only track I think is qualified on the album.

porkmarras 07.17.2006 07:21 AM

The Neutral is a fine track too.

whorefrost 07.17.2006 07:26 AM

profound

porkmarras 07.17.2006 07:27 AM

Ignored.

ZEROpumpkins 07.17.2006 07:27 AM

I don't like the notion of introducing choruses into their songs. It ruins a lot of them (What a waste, Incinerate, The Nuetral).

Read above entry for my feelings on the matter. Except for the life story part....

porkmarras 07.17.2006 09:18 AM

I've found a promo of it with 4 tracks yesterday. It has one of those sticker press releases on the cover. It was so cheap i bought it with the intention of selling it on ebay at on point but i think i'll keep it.

nature scene 07.17.2006 09:43 AM

no.

some decent songs like Rats, and Pink Steam... that's about it. It feels weird not buying the album, but I just can't get into the songs - and they weren't any better live.

Rob Instigator 07.17.2006 10:26 AM

I think it is their most ROCKING, fantastically tuneful album ever. EVER.

it just rules form song to song, flowing, making you feel it. reena is and should be the breakout hit of the season. reena is beautiful.
the whole album kicks ass.

the best is still daydream nation

Anarchos 07.17.2006 10:27 AM

I like it. I like it a lot.

Disgruntled Youth 07.17.2006 10:35 AM

Great SY album I fucking love it!!!

toxic johnny 07.17.2006 10:43 AM

Well it's their New Wave album without a doubt... simple and concise [apart from Pink Steam and Turquoise Boy]... I get a real Television and Blondie vibe. As I've said before once you accept it for what it is then It's a lot easier to enjoy.

I now think that Reena, Jams Run Free and The Neutral are stunning.

An excellent statement, but unfortunately I'm not allowed to rep you for it.

YEP YEP YEP YEP YEP YEP YEP.What happened to letting albums grow on you and all that? These days an album comes out and it has to be either an instant classic(what a ridiculous expression) or a pile of crap from the word go.And you get repped big time if this thing lets me.

finding nobody 07.17.2006 11:16 AM

looking back i should've added a 'undecided' choice in the poll.. oh well

The songs on Rather Ripped sound really good live!

finding nobody 07.17.2006 12:00 PM

i love your avatar 100%
it reminds me of a story a freind used to tell about when he got a Woody toy for christmas and his brother got Buzz Lightyear. there was some envy goin down

HaydenAsche 07.17.2006 12:51 PM

No.

kingcoffee 07.17.2006 02:22 PM

It's an okay album. Nothing that will really be fan favorites for the most part. Rather Ripped has some decent material but in my opinion, it just doesn't live up to standard SY material. It falls short of being really good. I don't think it's nearly as good as most of their other records such as Evol, Sister, Daydream Nation, Goo, Dirty, Washing Machine, A Thousand Leaves, NYC Ghost & Flowers, Murray Street and Sonic Nurse. All of these albums are better than Rather Ripped. I don't think it is a bad album, per se, I just don't think that it's a fully realized album. Given the song structure and chords used, I think the band could have done more with what they created. They could have expanded more on their musical ideas. I just feel that the material falls flat of what they could have done with it. The songs have the potential, but are never utilized to their fullest capabilities. And that is why I am so iffy about Rather Ripped. Not because the songs are bad, but because they aren't used to their fullest potential effect.

Rob Instigator 07.17.2006 02:46 PM

I think the more I listen to Rather Ripped the more I lve it. I would call it a top 5 fave

Daydream Nation
Evol
Sister
Bad Moon Rising
Rather Ripped

IMO RR is better than Nurse (which I LOVED) and Murray (which I loved, and which actually is a much slower, languid album)
