Lee Ranaldo in Amsterdam - September?
According to the Paradiso site, Lee Ranaldo, DJ Olive and Ulrich Krieger are among the artists "contributing" to the yearly Night of the Unexpected in Paradiso, Amsterdam on september 7. A Text of Light trio gig perhaps?
|
http://www.paradiso.nl/index2.php and then go to september 7... can't link to it directly because they have one of those flashy schmashy flash sites.
|

you think i should? hmm, i'll think about it on my way to work and get back to you later tonight. (that already happened a long time ago, pork!) |
Aw sweet Nefeli!
|
Perhaps this suggests that Lee, or maybe even all of SY, is going to tour in Europe in the autumn?
|
Maybe he could come to Belgium the next day???????
|
more info? i checked that web page, but it saying - Night of the Unexpected, but i can't see Lee Ranaldo name there.
|
if you click on the date september 7 then some names show up. i couldn't find any more info yet; probably when the lineup is complete. it doesn't say text of light or even who lee's playing with, but i assume lee ranaldo, dj olive and ulrich krieger together on the same bill means it will be a text of light thing, albeit in a smaller lineup without alan licht or even a drummer.
phil niblock and thomas ankersmit is very likely a duo performance too. |

maybe that's thinking very optimistic... sonic youth are touring the usa until september 3rd. i don't think they'd pull out a european tour straight after that. but maybe a few more days in december? |
ah, i love bumping my own topics!
there will be TWO performances by Lee: - Lee Ranaldo/Ulrich Krieger/DJ Olive trio (not Text of Light) - Lee Ranaldo solo "Drift" (with Leah's films on DVD; she won't be there) also solo performances by Ulrich Krieger and DJ Olive + lots more... don't miss it! |

I don't think Lee is pokkeherie's type:D |
Fuck!!! That's tonight!!! Um.... I'm thinking... I shouldn't miss this. *Starts to fidget*
|
Thanks sweetheart, but I might just miss it. Damn!

why not try to learn some dutch instead. The Night of the Unexpected is een festival van één nacht. The Night of the Unexpected is onderdeel van de internationale Gaudeamus Muziekweek i.s.m. Steim en Paradiso Met dank aan FPPM, Buma Cultuurfonds, Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst. I hope you have a damn good excuse, toko! |

I'd really like to go, but I'm on Texel and there's no way I can buy a ticket beforehand. It might be sold out before I get there. |
oh, i see... that's difficult indeed. maybe you can try paradiso but i don't think they'll take reservations by phone.
i think it was sold out last year (i didn't go), but it all depends on who's playing of course. |
Are you going pokkeherrie?
|
Can't you book online, Tokolosh?
|
i'll definitely be going
Quote:
you can, but not on the day of the gig. |
I don't have a credit card and I'm lousy with paypal.
|
you can use a normal debit card too if you have internet banking.
http://www.ideal-betalen.nl but online sales always stop about 7-10 days in advance. |
It's starting to look very bleak for me.

Please don't remind me. I missed it too.
|
i was there, just bought a ticket at the door...
i have seen/heard some pretty nice things... a little longer review will follow later... got some things to do first... |
wow! it must be deadly to see lee doing his solo impro!
|
last thursday was some collage thing, with artists playing right after each other and all over the building, not just on stage. there weren't many people at all, but i think it's planned like this too because some perfomances were in the middle of the hall or on the balconies.
as far as the sonic elements were concerned, lee's trio with ulrich krieger and dj olive was awesome. at the start dj olive was barely audible, but in the quiet middle part he and lee mixed well together, creating a nice ambient soundscape, where lee's playing reminded me a bit of the made in usa soundtrack for some reason. it was specifically not billed as a text of light perfomance and maybe to highlight this the films that were being projected behind them were not by brakhage (and apparently not chosen by them either). lee also did a short (about 25 minutes) solo version of drift in the upstairs room. it was nice, but a bit messy. certainly not as good as what i'd seen in brussels earlier this year, but that was a full performance of course while on thursday it all seemed less prepared. without leah all he had to go with was the dvd and he didn't came out in his timing to the movie at times. at the end he looked a bit helpless when he said "the film lasts a little longer than i had planned. i'm just gonna let it play out". :D still a nice performance though, it's always great to watch lee playing solo. interesting confession: lee said that some of his poems were directly inspired by internet spam. |
Thanks for the review :)
|
as for other european tour plans this autumn, lee said that sonic youth will play a "secret" gig at a private party in paris in october and also add some more dates in december, but just a few. the only ones i heard about were that a second gig in brussels will be added and when i asked about holland he said "maybe", because they were at this point undecided about choosing between the hague and barcelona.
i don't know about any other possible dates, but i heard that if there will be any at all then there won't be many (just 1-2 weeks maximum) |
you're "welcome" i "guess".

I would have giving you all my reputation point if I could :) |
i wouldn't count on anything moshe (i slightly edited what you quoted there). when he mentioned maybe some more dates it sounded to me more like "adding two or three" than "adding five or six". the only one that seemed certain was an extra gig in brussels.
thanks nefeli. :o |
So there's a small chance, that they'll come to Holland.... Nice! :)
Thanks Pokke Herrie! *fingers crossed* |
i don't think many bands would choose the hague over barcelona, but fingers crossed indeed.
of course he saw the humour in it as well, because he said it with a big grin: "we just might prefer the hague over barcelona". |
Rock on Lee
