Best SY Songs To Play Acoustically/Solo?
What Sonic Youth songs would sound best played solo with just an acoustic guitar and a mic for company? I'm guessin' some of the slower ones such as The Empty Page and Disconnection Notice.
I know those two have been played solo by Thurston in the past. Any others? I know of Incinerate and Do You Believe In Rapture? bein done by him also. Some of the rockier ones might not work so well solo because of the guitar lines working off each other, for example, I had to rework large chunks of Sugar Kane to get it to sound good solo, involving figurin out Lee's parts in Thurston's tunings etc. |
You're not planning on busking SY songs are you?
|
what about helen lundeberg?
thurston played it solo at the flywheel in july 2005 |
(in reply to sonicl) Nah, course not! I just wondered, cos it's very rarely that my band (bein the unorganized bunch of scruffs we are) manage to come together for a band practise, so it would be nice to find the best songs to play on yr own. Also, if we're ever stuck for things to play at gigs, I can bust out the acoustic and rip out some tunes (the easy way out I know but, meh!)!

You'd have to do a bit of adaptation (e.g. losing noise bits), but Diamond Sea would sound nice.
|
god, it would be even more boring
probably some shit from murray street. |

Really? Is there audio/visual evidece of this? I'd love to hear/see it! |
Werent both EJSTNS and 'Murray Street' born that way if memory doesn't fail me?
|
Oh... Winner's Blues of course! :o
|
That's the obvious one!I meant a good chunk of both the albums were born acoustically,i think.
|
I'm fairly sure that I'm in a minority of one here, but I'd love SY to release an acoustic album, maybe some kind of a John Fahey like thing as an SYR release.

kim and steve were with him according to the archived news on sy.com |
NATN: Murray Street was born out of your acoustic tracks. What are the origins of these pieces? Thuston Moore: Well, this one is not too dissimilar. I mean, when we were getting ready to do this record, again I was in the process of trying to amass some material for some forthcoming solo jolt. But I delivered maybe half of the songs to the band, and said, well, let's try these for starters. They were already sort of structured and had lyrics. So we did that, and it's great. I always really like doing it because each member does whatever they want with the song and it totally changes it from whatever idea I hear around it. It's always so great for me. It turns it into a Sonic Youth song and completely away from it being a solo song. In fact, I sometimes forget which ones were

I'd be really interested to hear those acoustic versions of the songs. If anyone can help here,Thurston played a whole acoustic set a few years ago that i've read a review of on The Wire.If anyone has that show, would you kindly up it for pork?

I'll try to get my hands on that one and reupload that. It's really great, even though Rain on Tin sounds better on electric guitars. |
OR! (Obvious)

Skip tracer. Just alter Thurston and Lee's parts together. It would sound really cool acoustically/or solo.

Here's a link to the acoustic set Jim, Thurston and Lee did someplace (WERS ??) a few years ago :
http://rapidshare.de/files/28060504/...tWERS.mp3.html The songs are from Murray Street of course. |

and it was awful |
Too true!

I think only thruston is playing acoustic though, its the mark goodier session, lee is still on electric, good version though. |
I think Schizophrenia would sound nice.
|
I think Thurston's solo acoustic Radical Adults Lick Godhead style from Rotterdam '02 is a blow-away.
Together, he & Jim & Lee did some sweet justice to The Empty Page, Rain on Tin & Disconnection notice on the WERS Boston '02 also. |
"compilation blues" not so hard to sing but gives great pleasure
