Overhang Party
http://www.overhangparty.com Mute Era http://www.myspace.com/muteera Michael Yonkers and The Blind Shake have also just released a new album that is pretty awesome. |
i love broken boy soldiers by the raconteurs. it's strait up rock. and uhh.. shit.. i dont know, it's hard for me to name good contemporary acts that are strait up rock
|
|
What about the new Pearl Jam?
|
Hm. I've always viewed pyschadelic rock to be it's most straightforward, purest form. But that's on your list, so it makes the question difficult for me.
|
Hendrix.

www.myspace.com/bluebottlekiss definitely give The Judas Hands a listen. The link to their website then has more tunes. They're more than a 'rockband', but I think they're just what you're looking for.

the raveonettes always fit my need for just basic rock and roll
http://www.myspace.com/theraveonettes - just give love in a trashcan a try, or one of those great demos.... |
here's a variety of stuff, the last 6 things on the list are are metal of sorts, don't know where you stand on that, but i know metal isn't popular here... most of the list isn't metal though, but it's all good stuff either way. all contemporary too.
can can heads circle paik tivol moping swans lightning bolt coachwhips thought forms afri rampo COA oshiri penpenz doodles up-tight LSD March bardo pond on so so many white white tigers major stars comets on fire sanhedolin ectogram pumice times new viking jesu enslaved velvet cacoon lair of the minotaur high on fire leviathan |
T&b pretty much listed all I was going to toss around, but it's not the first time that happens.
For more noisier type of stuff I suggest: A-Frames Part Chimp Die! Die! Die! Trumans Water Silver Daggers Paik has struck a chord with me lately and made it's way on my "to get -list". Also, not contemporary, but more like timeless, High Rise who are possibly the rockiest band ever. |
Quote:
I really, really like this band. No one knows who they are though. |
I just downloaded some of their stuff last night, the A-frames. They're cool.
|
Quote:
Well, they're promising. Dunno what's their best album and is it worth buying. If you like them, you shoud probably check out Karate Party, who have at least one good song (out of the two I've heard)... |
A-Frames 2 is the title I think. Strange lyrics.

comets on fire new one is rad, I heard the promo copy a few days ago.
The drones The Duke Spirit High Rise Big Business (bass and drum two piece members formerly in Karp, Murder City Devils. They are currently touring as a part of the melvins) Rockets from the Tombs (like the stooges but rougher, members went on to form pere ubu and the dead boys) Hot Snakes True Radical Miracle (seriously post-punk/pigfuck infuenced shit http://www.myspace.com/trueradicalmiracle) |
i got so tired of a frames after a while...
rock: boris (akuma no uta, pink) guitar wolf dmbq motörhead be your own pet kyuss horse the band dead meadow electric wizard fu manchu rah bras cows polysics wires on fire your enemies friends converge pink fairies down slayer mastodon thin lizzy discharge darkthrone loose fur if you like high rise, check out offshoots such as mainliner and musica transonic (both featuring kawabata makoto) |
Oh man I haven't heard Fu Manchu in forever. Seems all of a sudden they sell their CDs at Best Buy now, though.

dunno, they're not that noise to me. I mean, they're fuzzy and shit, but still straight up rock'n'roll anyways. Might be just my opinion though. I love that stuff nevertheless. 'Shame Fantasy II' is one of my records of the year so far. |
I don't really go for contemporary rock... there's not much point as it has been done before countless times. However, recently I have been impressed by Awesome Color .
|
Try :
Deerhoof - Milkman |
oh yeah. kyuss, melvins, a perfect circle, tool(intellectual metal), bardo pond, converge(hardcore), probot(king diamond, max cavalera, etc, etc...), anything by neil young, pearl jam, dillinger escape plan, failure, the hives, the racounteurs, white stripes, jane's addiction, jesus lizard, machine head, flaming lips?, meshuggah, nine inch nails(with teeth, very entertaining, IMHO), primal scream, the fall, massive attack(100th window)
|
the kills no wow or, van halen.
|
Not exactly new, but:
Melvins - Houdini (1993), Ozma (1989) Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers (71) and Exile (72) |
Liars isn't what I'd call straightup rockandroll. It's good, but it's more experimental. Rather noisy, disorderly, but ultimately beautiful. Definitely on the avant edge.
|
I'm not into too much current straightup rock, becuz to me much of that kind of thing sounds too derivative of 60s, 70s, 80s stuff I like. I'd rather go back and listen to the Stones or the Replacements or Modern Lovers than listen to people making pale copies of that. The best in contemporary music, I feel, is in noise and more experimental stuff rather than in the more traditional approaches.
|
The Sound of Urchin is the best straight-up rock band out right now. The Diamond is a great album from start to finish.
|
duke spirit
kyuss 'pink' by boris, but not any of their other stuff amusement parks on fire the first liars record rather ripped at the drive in |
Quote:
why? |
saying that the only boris good boris album is pink and not the others because they are so different is like saying that the only good sonic youth album is daydream nation and not the others.
and yeah, amusement parks on fire are pretty swell for simple guitar rock pop with dream pop touches. i forgot the notwist on my list, they are awesome riff rock that's very different and original. |

I've heard big things about Tv on the Radio, then I gave them abit of a listen to (just from the net) and I didn't really like what I heard (it was off the new album). So I'm glad I didn't do a guess purchase.
|
new tvotr has a more expanded sound than their previous stuff and they have fine tuned their songwriting skills, the sound isn't as dark (gone are the pere ubu/suicide/throbbing gristle influences) but it's certainly more varied. i haven't really had a chance to really get so much into the album as i haven't heard it much but it does sound interesting.
desperate youth...was definitely a grower for me. |
Their vocals are very... have a very... somewhat... reggae feel? Alittle like Michael Franti. I didn't dig the vocals. In it's defense, I ownly heard one song, though.
