Where to buy records in London
Ok, since i kinda hijacked the 'Last album you bought' thread,i apologize and created a thread according to the subject.
First of all avoid big stores like Virgin or HMV unless you can't find a record anywhere else.I bought an original promo of Electrelane's 'Axes' for just £1 in Flashback(wich i already mentioned in the other thread). It would have cost me in the region of £13/14 if i had gone to the above stores. |
MUSIC & TAPE EXCHANGE, 95 Berwick Street, London, W1V 3PP, 020-7434-2939
Sister store to the Notting Hill collective, has a decent selection of all styles of music from prog rock to techno, with a bargain basement downstairs which, over the years, has yielded many gems, including mint copies of Gina X's No GDM and Chas Jankel's 3,000,000 Synths in the past couple of years. website ![]() The above have many branches but as an ex employee i know that both the ones in Camden town get the best stock and have excellent basements. |
i prefer reckless (also on berwick st) to m&v exchange for second hand shopping.
|
I repeat again. This is a must for vinyl if you can avoid getting annoyed at the old bastard:

where's that?
|
Reckless is good, yes, but not as good on obscure stuff as M&V(they simply don't get as much stock). The good thing about Reckless is that their staff are paid better and therefore are better mannered with the customers.I sorely miss miss their branch in Islington wich has been swept off to make space for a luxury gay bar.

the reckless on berwick st is way better stocked and priced than the m&v, i haven't been to the one in camden, as i prefer not to go to camden if i can help it.
|
Oh if we are talking about the branch in Berwick Street you're right. How many of them have you visited, out of curiosity.
|
Reckless isn't as good as place for selling though, they're very fussy about what they'll take, and pay no more than M&V, who will take just about anything so long as it's legal.
|
Not secondhand, but I've very quickly come to like the new Fopp up near Cambridge Circus. Damn good place for a bargain.
And there's a good place on one of the side streets off the lower part of Berwick Street too. I can't remember what it's called - it's on a corner. |

If anything the staff at Reckless are generally less knowledgable.
|
But in Reckless I can find what i want more easily, so I don't need knowledge.
This doesn't go for the dance shop though. I haven't a clue where to find anything in there. |

it's very good for soul, funk, jazz & reggae etc and also has a decentish brazilian section. it's where the Soul Jazz label is based out of, you can get soul jazz stuff there for cheaper than elsewhere. |

when did you come to london? |

You don't see that many americans hanging around that part of town Saturnine and i should know as i lived there.

Rough Trade's a bit too obvious to mention isn't it? But it must be mentioned, particularly the Notting Hill branch, which benefits from not being underground.
I used to love Intoxica on Portobello Road too, but they're terrible for expensiveness. They were about to sell me an SY bootleg 7" for £5 about six years ago and they suddenly decided that it should have been £40 so they put the price up. They still had the record four years later and were still asking £40 for it. May still have it too for all I know. |

|
you don't get to see anything interesting on a tour bus, it's very boring.
T&B - yes i did. |
And if you were in the area did you see anything at the Sadler's Wells?
