UUUUUU - The Astral Travels cd-r

UUUUUU is Scotland's Derek McArthur. The Astral Travels is a sprawling 75 minute album of lucid guitar drones, flowing through the cosmos at slow-motion-lightspeed. Pretty melodies develop over top of the patient compositions and unfold in a most comfortable fashion.

how do you pronounce uuuuuuu? I'm seriously asking? How do YOU (derek) pronounce it?

Derek 04.07.2011 09:53 PM

"6 U's".

Now that I've told you, has it made you more interested in hearing 75 minutes of ambient drone?

EVOLghost 04.07.2011 11:46 PM

whaaa? only on CDR?

Derek 04.08.2011 06:33 AM

You can give me the money to press vinyl if you so desire.

nicfit 04.08.2011 07:18 AM

guitar drone?

more interested? No. But I enjoy drone. So I was already interested. I would hever have guessed "6 u's". I actually thought it was "you you you you you you you"

guitar drone?
Yeah, everything is guitar.

Yeah the name came from when I first recorded a track for the project and randomly punched in uuuuuu as a placeholder. I started using it for all the other files and it stuck, I never thought of it's pronunciation when thinking of it. Most people I know just say 6 U's mostly cause 'you you you you you you' is way too tedious to say haha. It's only $6 if you're in the USA and the package is really cool (plus it's 75 minutes of music, and I write the pieces like songs so it doesn't entirely drone on), so you know, it's worth the money I'd say.

Oh and for those of you wondering, it's taken a long time for this to come together (I recorded it a year ago) and I'm glad it's came together cause this is my best work so far.

noisereductions 04.08.2011 09:27 AM

if still in print next month I'll probaby grab it D. I'm on strict budget for April sadly.

floatingslowly 04.08.2011 09:42 AM

do want.

I pronounce it "ewwwww". it's the sound from stepping of feces, finding fresh roadkill under your tire, vomit in your backseat, a clogged or unflushed public toilet or even the simple fact of knowing that a coworker does not wash their hands.

drone on.

Genteel Death 04.08.2011 11:38 AM

Send me a copy Derek. No money for such releases at the moment, I'm afraid. I will send you a bunch of stuff in return with bitching about things and art.

Derek 04.08.2011 12:49 PM

I'll see how many artist copies I get first (they've still not arrived, damn international shipping). I could easily send you the Robe. tape because I got a massive amount of copies of that, I'm not sure if this will be in the same scenario.

EVOLghost 04.08.2011 01:08 PM

Hmmm Maybe cassette release for this?s?ss

Derek 04.08.2011 01:44 PM

I chose to release it as a CD-R because I wanted to preserve the quality and that there would have been less copies made if it were cassette. I also wanted it to be available to those that don't have tape players (which is a surprising amount of people). I will probably (read: definitely) have cassette releases in the future though.

EVOLghost 04.08.2011 01:53 PM

cool beans.

SonicBebs 04.08.2011 02:20 PM

do you mind if i say it ooooooo?

$6 to the us? how much to london?

Derek 04.08.2011 02:24 PM

On the site if you select WORLD it'll be $8 which is just below £5.

Special artwork of a tiger slut on stock card in every package.

derek, pretty cool to be featured in not only the best drone site on the net, but one of the best mp3 blogs ever.

whats next for uuuuuu?
Yeah man, it's one of my favourite blogs so I'm happy about it.

I don't really have other plans so far except create create create and hopefully one or two people will take notice haha.

This album is getting a lot more popularity than I thought it would though..

Derek 04.09.2011 10:15 AM

Oh, yeah, I get ya. I think it's cause I'm coming to it from a more pop perspective. I write them like songs instead of just 'jamming out'.

SpaceCadetHayden 04.09.2011 02:28 PM

I'll have to pick this up when I get paid next. I'm balling right now but I don't have any money on my card unfortunately.

Pelle 04.10.2011 11:22 AM

The sample sounds really great!

Maybe I should get myself a copy.
How many releases do you have out?

Derek 04.10.2011 11:29 AM

Only this and the split tape with Robe. (who is the drone band of this forum's atsonicpark) which is sold out. Thanks for the support.

Pelle 04.10.2011 11:52 AM

Alright, I think i've seen some more releases on the internet a while ago, but I might be wrong..or are those downloads?

I'm intressted of getting anything.

Derek 04.10.2011 11:59 AM

I released a few records online yeah but they aren't too great.

This one still holds up though:
http://weedtemple.blogspot.com/2010/...prescient.html

Feel free to download the Robe. split as well since it's sold out:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ACUDBB2X

Man, if I had the money I'd honestly reissue the split in a vinyl edition with new artwork and everything. I think it deserves it.

Pelle 04.10.2011 12:25 PM

Awsome, thanx for the links!

That would be awsome. Let me know if you'll make any vinylissues.
Ambient music on vinyl (or tapes) - there's seriously nothing better!

atsonicpark 04.13.2011 12:13 AM

I didn't even know the uuuuuu/robe. split was sold out. Really?

Er.. wait... That's with that one band called UUUUU though, right? Not the same band, right? Heh...

I'm playing a show with the dream root guy sunday, derek (albeit with scissa shok)!

Derek 04.13.2011 07:02 AM

He said he had "one or two copies.." and it's in the 'past' section of his website so I'm just assuming..

atsonicpark 04.13.2011 10:15 AM

wow. dope.

Derek McArthur, also known as the one, who runs the ambient project UUUUUU, and his album “The Astral Travels” is now proudly reviewed on Agniworld. The first thing, that struck me most, is the project’s name. I am ignorant about the author’s intention, but I’ll try to propose, that “UUUUUU” in onomatopoeic manner could express the very essence of drone ambient – the continuous generation of almost monotonous sounds (monotonous – of course, for an untrained person!). The next striking thing was the great abyss of picturesqueness, that I encountered while listening. The tracks are a result of processing guitar sounds, chords, sometimes you can also hear flute warbles. The entire work is a profound, meaningful and sincere set of drone ambient music. So, join “The Astral Travels” of Derek McArthur’s UUUUUU.

i love Of The Xerophytic Blooming so much.

I hate to say it (since I play piano on it) but A Diadem of Blood is so perfect. The piano ends it so beautifully.

ROTHKO is my favorite song though. That constant delay. It reminds me of tripping on DXM. In fact, it's probably the most DXM-y song ever created. Holy shit. PERFECT.

DEAD ERA is beautiful. Clanging longing chords.

WRISTS is shocking as fuck, with guitar/electronic manipulations panning all around the stereo plane and turning into something insane. Certain parts of this is really fucking lovely, too, like one of the non-disco GOBLIN songs. Guitars clash and collide quietly.

KKING LEAR is fragmented, dark, abstract, with slight rays of hope. A call to arms and the only logical conclusion. YET IT'S TRACK 1! This track is markedly different from the rest of the album though seems to encapsulate all the other UUUUU albums -- especially SU ASIDE -- while presenting something new... perfect album.

No really, this album BLOWS ME AWAY. Ddddddderek, this is your best album BY FAR. FUCK!

I hope this post was okay. I'm not going to send the album out to anyone, but I didn't know if you wanted me to even talk about it yet, I can edit this and delete this if you want me to. Just.. wow man.

Peace.

The Watcher 06.05.2011 08:04 AM

I've never seen this thread before but it looks very cool, and the guy who released it lives in the city next to mine so I ordered a copy, looking forward to hearing it!! I can't listen to the samples because I just moved and have no Internet and I'm posting from my wife's iPhone while she is sleeping but it sounds like something that's right up my alley.

Derek 06.05.2011 09:16 AM

Thanks Adam, you rule. Yes, there is a new UUUUUU album called 'Of the Xerophytic Blooming' and it will be out eventually. The only people that have heard it so far have been Adam and my girlfriend since they're my creative consultants heheh.

And thanks Watcher, hope you enjoy!
There's only about 2 or 3 copies of The Astral Travels left now, so if anyone wants it last minute then do it soon. Thanks!

The Watcher 06.14.2011 10:30 AM

Got my CD today, fast shipping! I will listen when I get home......

The Watcher 06.15.2011 11:45 PM

Derek really cool stuff - I like it a lot. Cool album with excellent sounds. What kind of setup do you use? All guitar with cool effects pedals?

Would definitely buy another album from you, keep thread updated.......

Derek 06.15.2011 11:47 PM

Sweet thanks. I just use guitar and amp then I edit it on my comp... I try not to use pedals as to keep it simple.

The Watcher 06.16.2011 01:05 PM

Derek have you sent your stuff to the guy who runs Cyclindrical Habitat Modules? I think it'd be right up his alley......

The Watcher 06.16.2011 01:13 PM

On that same line, and to reiterate what I said last night while drinking scotch, I really really like this album - I've spun it twice so far since last night and I really think the sound is fantastic - I love solo guitar stuff like this, where it's more ambient the loopy, if you know what I mean. Great work!
