what comic strips do you love?

Calvin and Hobbes (a long time favourite)
Far Side
Zits
the Other Coast
Peanuts (of course)

I used to be heavily into Garfield, but now....

also, "the city" by derf

(same deal here-- my favorite ones are those starring "white middle class suburban man"

Hip Priest 08.07.2006 09:05 AM

Calvin and Hobbes, especially this one:

many moons ago, there was one in English papers called Beau Peep that was quite funny, but I wouldn't know if it' still around. I have a couple of old books still, I think. I might search them out tonight and inflict some scans upon you.

Linus, from Peanuts, is cool too. and the strips in Private Eye such as Yobs, The Premiershits and Celeb are worth a read. The Fortena Times used to have one called Guru that was excellent.

A lot of people make fun of Garfield, because obviously it's a piece of crap now. But I still maintain that in the early 80s it was near perfect.

Toothpaste For Dinner:
http://www.toothpastefordinner.com/

Not my favorite, maybe, but it's taken up quite a bit of my time lately.

luxinterior 08.07.2006 11:08 AM

To be honest I don't really think most comic strips are funny. I even tend to get bored with strips that are smart but lack any real sense of humor. Political cartoons are a good example of that, although I have come across a few that have made me laugh when they're actually silly. Now something like this...this is funny to me:

Get Fuzzy, more of a guilty pleasure.

Dilbert, maybe because I have a business degree.

Sherman's Lagoon, usually satisfying.

Pearls & Swine, I think thats what its called, the one with the rat.

Bizarro, I think it's called that, kind of like the far side, but not.

atari 2600 08.28.2006 03:17 PM

from today's metafilter

Calvin and Hobbes rarities, including some comic panels Watterson drew of himself with Calvin. From Platypus Comix which also has a nice Bloom County lost strips page.

DemonBox 08.28.2006 03:20 PM

I really enjoy Calvin & Hobbes, The Far Side, Rocky(Martin Kellerman is amazing, I hope he'll maintain his gift forever), Dilbert, Pondus, M, and Bizzaro.

atari 2600 08.28.2006 03:36 PM

I read something the other day where
...For Better or for Worse was voted as the best comic strip of all time

wtf?

i should puke. but as kegmama says, "the masses are the asses"

there is an even worst one though. horrid. i can't remember the name but it's usually one panel only with stupid little children.

now you know what used to be great? zippy the pinhead. oh yes zippy was great in the 90s. but i haven't seen it in a while.

Rob Instigator 08.28.2006 04:01 PM

I like Pearls Before Swine

Toilet & Bowels 08.28.2006 07:02 PM

k-krack 08.28.2006 07:19 PM

I am quite proud of my collection of Calvin & Hobbes, the very favourite.
other than that, as far as real comics, the Far Side is quite funny, and thats about all i can think of.. nothing in the newspapers is really worth reading.

what the hell?! i have always ((always) always)) hated (hated) for better or for worse. it's not even funny! it's called a COMIC, not a printed soap opera!

webcomics- Toothpaste For Dinner, Natalie Dee, Married to The Sea and White Ninja are the only ones i have cared for.

Danny Himself 08.28.2006 07:35 PM

I like Natalie Dee.

jennthebenn 08.29.2006 12:10 AM

atari 2600 08.29.2006 12:15 AM

wanna buy a book of comic strips?

I suggest Bloom County or The Far Side.

king_buzzo 08.29.2006 02:04 AM

i like late 70s and early 80s spiderman. actually all marvel shit rules.

This Is Not Here 02.18.2009 11:26 PM

Dr. Eugene Felikson 02.18.2009 11:42 PM

Calvin & Hobbes, Pearls Before Swine, Dilbert

indietits is a great online read.

demonrail666 02.19.2009 09:40 AM

Andy Capp was a bit of an institution for a while but seems to have fallen out of favour now. A definite pre-cursor to characters like Sid the Sexist and Viz in general.

sorry for my 2-year delay responding

demonrail666 02.19.2009 10:10 AM

Royston Robertson is probably my favourite single panel cartoonist at the moment.
