Everyneurotic 04.02.2006 12:48 AM

early daniel johnston is genius!!!

the latter stuff is good, but the earlier the better

finding nobody 04.02.2006 12:54 AM

what about the movie about him? isnt it out now?

atari 2600 04.02.2006 02:55 AM

yeah, & i just saw a clip & Steve is in it.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436231/

(i suppose this could go in go in the "Sonic Gossip" section as a result haha)

now i don't feel so bad about all the posts i made today because i would have been impelled to post about this appearance of Steve Shelley in the new Daniel Johnston documentary The Devil & Daniel Johnston anyway.

(a play on the Devil & Daniel Webster & i imagine, his parents as ignorant but affable Texans & Robert Johnson as well)

my early stuff was my best too.. now that I can play, it's nothing all that special...but i suppose if i ever found a like-minded person to play drums though i could put my stuff out there still because it rocks on some level...it's the age-old problem, everyone wants to play guitar. When i have played with a drummer in the past, (just jamming though) some sort of strange magic takes over & I play stuff that pours right out of me. Add to my difficulties that I am not a good singer really, but as we all know that doesn't really matter if you can write good songs. I cannot. I have severe mental handicaps when it comes to writing any kind of song lyrics. So that means that in addition to finding some needle-in-a-haystack drummer, I would also have to find a dynamic frontperson.

when Thurston was named guitarist of the year after Goo he joked that he could play "a killer version of Red House maybe by the time I'm fifty."
Kim followed that up with this:
"what's interesting is the way people compensate."

finding nobody 04.20.2006 10:41 PM

"good morning you" is one of the greatest songs ever!

jon boy 04.21.2006 07:51 AM

i think that just about everything he has done is pure gold.

Rob Instigator 04.21.2006 10:06 AM

danile johnston is a funny guy. I have met him several times. the first time was when I was at the Uniersity of houston and in the student program board (small and large stage) and we were setting up concerts. One of the concerts was daniel jjohnston. we wanted to get him to play. he came to play, and this is where I met him first, accompanied by his mother and two rather l;arge orderlies from the texas mental health institute where he was a patient at the time.
he played great songs, just himself surrounded by many instruments, so the songs were exactly like the tapes.
he played my favorite CASPER the FRIENDLY GHOST
he was very entertaining and odd and weird. after the show I escorted him and his "crew (the orderlies and his mom) outside of the building at U of H, and said good bye to him. later that week we heard word that he had ditched his escorts just minutes after I said goodbye and had ended up in Miami somehow,a nd that his parents had to go get him.

the next time I met him (BUY YIP JUMP MUSIC by the way)
he played a gig at rudyards in houston and he had by then been on medication and was much better spirits. he had also been playing witha full band, which was cool, but this gig was just him again. the openeer was a band that was originally from houston then austin then NYC called Drums & Tuba. I like drums & Tuba.
daniel johnston was great that night.

he is a very nice guy.

the dead milkmen's cover of ROCKETSHIP{ is my favorite cover of daniel johnston

Rupert 'Stiles' Stilinski 04.21.2006 10:17 AM

Wowzers!

I saw the movie last weekend (it's also playing in Chicago) and absolutely loved it. I'm a documentary nut, and this has to be one of the best. His life is so interesting and wild... the kind of story that couldn't be scripted. Steve's inclusion in it (and Thurston and Lee are in a videotape) really made it special, but the best part was the Gibby Haynes interview (I don't want to spoil it).

GO SEE THIS MOVIE! IT'S THE COWS' BOLLACKS!

finding nobody 04.21.2006 02:17 PM

cool story rob

krastian 04.21.2006 02:44 PM

Jeff Feuerzeig is cool. His Half Japanese doc is top notch (The Band That Would Be King). I'll have to check out the Daniel Johnston one.

finding nobody 05.16.2006 09:47 PM

i know the half jap guy has a son in a band called the stinky puffs, anyone heard them?

krastian 05.16.2006 10:39 PM

Jad or David?

golden child 05.16.2006 11:45 PM

its playing here soon, ill go see it. daniel johnston is cool

umjammer atomsk 05.17.2006 08:14 AM

I haven't heard too much of Daniel Johnston's work, but what I have heard I find really great. And the film seems really good. I'm interested in seeing it.

I haven't seen the Half Japanese one either, damn.

Bertrand 05.17.2006 09:01 AM

There's a great compilation if you wanna start, credited to the Late Great Daniel Johnston, called Discovered Covered.
2 disks, with his work on one, and covers on the other. So that if you don't like him or a specific period in his work, you can appreciate the covers (done by Tom Waits, M. Ward or Bright Eyes to name the ones I dug).
His site regularly provides mp3 to get to know him a bit better - and you'll have the visuals too.

My favorite is Rejected Unknown, and is quite recent.
And Some Things Last A Long Time on 1990 is really moving.

atari 2600 05.17.2006 01:37 PM

i shared discovered covered at the trading group when this thread was going on originally. i like the artistic vice cassette best though.

i still haven't seen the movie; i've only read about it, unfortunately.

Man, "arist growing old" and "joy without pleasue" are my top two faves. All of his early stuff is so raw and honest.
http://www.rejectedunknown.com/press.../Mondo2000.htm
here's an interview where he mentions sonic youth

Quote:

M2: What about Sonic Youth? You did a track on 1990 with a couple
of Sonic Youth fellows. Do you like those guys?

DJ: I love them, yeah. They made some great music.

golden child 08.19.2006 04:14 PM

fuck yeah man, i rock joy without pleasure often.
the movie was great, i dont have anything to say about it really but it was cool.

deviltown is quite a good one too.

finding nobody 08.19.2006 04:20 PM

Joy Without Pleasure is indescribable man. The lyrics are some of the best ever. They're so darn simple, it almost feels like something you could've written.
The song makes me wanna live with my parents for a couple more years

Danny Himself 09.23.2006 12:56 PM

I saw this movie today and loved it. Thats my only reason for bumping this.

finding nobody 02.27.2007 10:10 PM

krastian 02.28.2007 12:50 AM

Do yourself a favor....become your own savior!!!!

finding nobody 02.28.2007 07:15 AM

Right on swa(y). It's hard for me to compare people to Dylan. Their both geniuses for sure.

Anyone know what song my sig is from? It's one of my favorite Dan songs

Tokolosh 11.13.2007 06:27 AM

A cool 10 min video of Daniel Johnston at Domino Festival 2007.
Backstage interview included.

Danny Himself 07.24.2008 06:49 PM

I just got back from Daniel Johnston & Friends, live! OFF THE HOOK! He closed with 'true love will find you in the end'. Also, for a long time, Scout Niblett was staring into my eyes and into my soul and it was weird.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 07.24.2008 06:58 PM

Get attached to a rolling stone and yr libel to get crushed

atsonicpark 07.24.2008 06:59 PM

he's pretty good.

SuperCreep 07.25.2008 03:00 AM

I went from really liking him to seeing the movie and then finding his music a bit on the disturbing side to the point where I just couldn't listen to it and now I love him again. Well, his early stuff at least. Anything after 1990 does nothing for me. It's a bit sad to watch the guy nowadays, especially stuff like this.

Regardless, at his peak, there's no doubt that the guy was an absolutely brilliant songwriter.

acousticrock87 07.25.2008 03:58 AM

I really don't think he's ever been a great songwriter. He's just crazy. I do like his music, because he's a very interesting person, but I'd need a pretty convincing arguement to call him anything more than "decent".

Although, "Story Of An Artist", I have to say, is very nearly great. So is "Some Things Take a Long Time", but I wonder how much input he had in the production of it.
