If Kim's Voice Was So Shot, Why Didnt They
...just do ANOTHER song?!! w/ Thurston on vox? Shit, man!
|
Yeah, she did sound a bit off. I guess after touring all summer that'll happen.
|
Oh well, it happens I suppose. Steve and Lee were really rockin' though.
|
My mom FUCKING HATED IT. She sat there just shocked out of her mind that they were just on national television. She aslo commented on Kim's dancing saying she looked like a 3 year old and was expecting her to start jump roping.
I dont know why they didnt play another song though like you said, hell, I would have taken Incinerate. But in the end, no harm done. |
Croatoan, I guarentee that was what my mom would have said had she seen it.
|
She also said that she could sing better than that, and my mom knows that she is no singer.
I'll have her listen to Rheena tomorrow but I'll bet money that she still won't like it. But she kindof liked the song itself. |
Have her listen to a few ATL songs, 'Cross The Breeze, and the WM title track. Her voice sounds better on those.
|
do you care what your mom thinks of SY?
do you think we care??? geez, get a grip... i don't see the big deal, yeah she sounded a bit flat. however last night she sounded alright in Toronto. |
Quote:
No and no. I was just trying to discuss the topic and the look on her face was hilarious so I talked about her. No big deal at all...geez. |
She did a great job on Reena when she was in Milwaukee, and I don't really like that song.
|
k, we've got like a MILLION threads about this, lol, but oh well.
uhhhm, i KNO they've gotta "promote" thier new stuff, but i still think it would've been cool to play an old song, like when they were on carson daly promoting murrary street, they played 100%, but OH WELL.......kim was a little off, and reena isnt exactly my favorite, but i did like how thurston TRIED to "save" the performance with JUUUUST a little "noise" towards the end, lol. but still would've like to see an older song played. |
TV Apperances are like a cum shot. One and done and thank you very much.I loved the performance on Conin.
|
if anyone has a link for this video it would be greatly appreciated!
|
I loved the performance also,
I never knew Thurston was that tall, looks as if hes a little bigger if not the same as Conan, and Conan is huge. ++ I loved kim's dancing, i think i'm going to replay it over and over and learn it so i can go out in the street and make some money doing it. |

That's the funniest thing that I've read on this board in a long time... it"s like a line from Pink Flamingo's :) |
My mom really hates Kim's voice in general so she thought it sucked.
But i agree, her voice was shot for shit. |
I think her headset was not working properly. I thought I saw her pointing to it after the song.
|
That's a possibility, if you can't hear yourself you can't hit the notes so it makes sence.
|
i think that was what happened, i taped it, and watching it again after Conan thanks the band and shakes hands... you can see kim discussing with thurston (audio at this point is just Conan's house band) what just happened and she 'put her finger to her ear'... that in general is a huge clue in that she couldn't hear herself during the performance, which makes it very very difficult to sing in key and/or hit the notes. its common to see singers in bands do this live as a clue in that they are at the mercy of a soundguy, but when you on television and this happens it generally seems that your fucked at that point... kinda suprising that the sound crew on such a show/network program would boch that up... so don't be quick to blame her.
i don't think the band can do more than a couple takes of a song because eventhough its taped for a national audience it is recorded live w/ a studio audience... |
I didnt think it was that great of a performance. "reena" is probably one of my least favorite songs on the record the only thing i was impressed with was how steve was able to keep that weird drumbeat at a certain part of the song.

*gasp* :) |
it doesnt matter if you dont like the song or if kim could not hear herself and sang of key at a few points. Just enjoy it and dont complain at the little things.
|
I thought it was very good and I agree Lee & Steve were rockin. Thurston to not to leave him out and I like his shirt he had on.
|
Yes, it's true, Kim's vocals were a bit rough last night, but so what? We're talking about SONIC YOUTH here! Their music has always been a bit rough around the edges. To me, that's a huge part of their magic. Especially in this era so completely dominated by over produced, disposable garbage it's nice to see somebody creating something so raw and real. Even their most melodic moments always have a bit of that raw edge- maybe the guitars are slightly out of tune, or the singing is a bit flat or whatever. And I think that very human element is precisely what makes their music so beautiful.
|
Ono -
Have you listened to Rather Ripped? It's produced as sheenily as a Good Charlotte album. |
I actually really liked the performance. Since when did Kim's voice sound normal? That's why it's unique and interesting. Like Ono said, their music has always been like that. It was even reminiscent of an older show, like an attempt to get back a little of what they used to have. I loved it.
|
Firstly, most, if not all, of the Reenas I've heard sound no better really.
the music sounded terrific, but Kim did sound particularly more strained even more than usual last night. She usually doesn't allow her movement to interfere with the delivery either, but rather to enhance the delivery, but last night you could hear her voice faltering as she was bouncing. After her dance, she seemed even more out of breath. She usually reserves that dance for Drunken Butterfly or Kool Thing, but since the camera was on her & the choices were either stand still or go nuts...she chose to go nuts & it was very cool. |

Of course I have and I really like it, the songs themselves and the sound of the record. I think there's a really big difference between something that's well recorded and totally over produced. A HUGE difference. In fact, one of the things that I really like about all their recent records is how well recorded they are. "Goo" and "Dirty" were a bit over produced by Sonic Youth standards, but I think everything they've done from like "Experimental Jet Set" and "Washing Machine" on has a really great sound. Very powerful yet still quite organic sounding. But that's just my opinion of course. To each his own.... |

Actually, it is not. The guitars are clean and the record sounds a bit poppy, but overproduced... are you kidding me? Their aren't thousands of overdubs... trippled up guitars... synths added for the fuck of it... strings... etcetera... Neither is their any compression, y'know compression, that bullshit that makes you incapable of hearing the fucking attack on the string at all and just makes power chords turn into this huge wall of crap mush... The vocals aren't pushed to the forefront above everything else. Nevermind is overproduced. By The Way, by the RHCP is overproduced... Ok Computer can be considered overproduced (all though it fits that record really well). Rather Ripped is rather straight forward... Warm and clean. As a matter of fact, I actually find it less produced, and simpler sounding than Murray Street and Sonic Nurse, which sort of had this calculated Jim O'rourke influenced production value. Not that I outright dislike that sound or blame Jim for it, its just something always seemed kind of sterile on the Jim O'rourke records compared to say A Thousand Leaves. |
it is all Conan O'Brien's fault, that fucking dipshit Ivy League wanna be funny asshole fuckface shit
|
Quote:
FUCK YES! Finally, an answer that makes sense. |
Quote:
so did you watch it or are you that intensively boycotting Conan? |
Never said it was over produced. I said it was too sheeny. It sounds polished to within an inch of its life.
|
Quote:
Hmmm... maybe... I don't think I agree... At least I don't see Good Charlotte as a good analogue. |
I wodl have watched it but I fell asleep, too tired after long long road trip.
|
Eh, its live rock n' roll, who needs perfection?
|
Quote:
It is polished to some extent. But I don't think it's too polished. I think it sounds great actually. Anyway, to each his own.... |
