asp's classic albums # 99: big black - songs about fucking
Don't call it half-cocked.
![]() you all know this one, and with good reason. It's a masterpiece. One fine fine album. |
So-so. A bit half-cocked. A little pile of shit compared to the mighty Atomizer.
NEXT THREAD. |
PILE OF SHIT? fuck outta heaaaa'. I could never listen to Atomizer all the way through.
|
I like SAF but after Atomizer, it did feel like a bit of a let down.
|
Is "Kim Gordon's Panties" on that?
(for that matter - is Steve Albini's?) ;-) |

Didn't Steve Albini - one time - like - have a pair of Kim's panties? And then - recently - after all the brouhaha over what Steve Albini said 'bout SY - Thurston was asking about Steve Albini's panties? Like - he shouldn't get his panties in a bunch? I also like the way Kim "thanked" Steve for "being an asshole" Ha, ha. Oh you kids - play nice! |
Pretty cool, but nowhere near as cool as Atomizer.

My thoughts exactly. That's easily Big Black's classic. ~Jeremy~ |
Wow, ATOMIZER just feels way too long for me to sit through. It's got some good stuff but man. This album flos so perfectly though. KITTY EMPIRE, FISH FRY, L DOPA, COLOMBIAN NECKTIE, BAD PENNY, PAVEMENT SAW, etc.. all classics. amazing album.
|
Pretty much EVERY Big Black song I've ever heard has been heavy on treble...
|
SONGS ABOUT FUCKING is way better than ATOMIZER you weirdos.
|
yeah, like ten thousand times better
then again, some people think 1000 hurts is better than at action park (I don't even think it's better than terraform). |
SAF is a bit...pop...for my liking. Girls and the gays like it I've heard.
|
1000 Hurts, Atomizer and Two Nuns and a Pack Mule are Albini's three finest.
Now stop getting Albini wrong! |

unlistenable on CD. great great on wax.:D |
Atomizer, yes.
|
hmmm, both atomizer and songs are awesome albums.... both different... atomizer is generally hailed as bb best record thanks to 3 or 4 pieces of fucking slay art on it but songs as a whole unit melds together much more... and is coherently a finer album. both rule with a trebly fist but sometimes a nice arguement is better than punching someones head in....and vice versa.
|
Big Black is always great
|
I retroactively dislike this album: meaning that it may be good in theory but Albini is simply too much of a cunt for me to actually like it, without being that much of a cunt that it's likeable (for which see 'why the Smiths are alright')
I could've saved myself the effort and just said it's half-cocked. Also - shit shoes, and the wrong guitar for that t-shirt on this evidence. A general no to those hats. And really - that shirt, on a drummer? Inexcusable. |

I rather dig the shirt |
I think you're mistaken - my understanding is that your actual opinion concurs with mine. Which it does. You've obviously just accidentally typed a contrary opinion. It happens a lot. Don't worry. But at least we agree it's a shit shirt.
|
<3 you cunt
|
I just got a big black songs about fucking sticker
is it okay to put it on my car or is it obscene? |
YESSSSS
|
No, Steve looks like shit, in a shit kind of way. It's not a good look, it's a shit look. It's a look that is shit.
What is wrong with you people? |
Its a pretty weak album. Two Nuns and a pack mule is better. But Atomizer is the pinnacle.
|
It's a tough call, but I think Songs About Fucking is a bit more cohesive and better overall than Atomizer. Plus it has 'Bad Penny', and that song slays everything in its path. As much as I dig Big Black, Shellac is still a way more interesting band to me. At Action Park, in my opinion, is better than anything Big Black ever did.
|
I agree about shellac, albini definitely got better as he got older.

please show us 'your look' |
Glice most certainly has more style than Steve Albeeny.
That said, I love this album but I prefer The Hammer Party |
