Ludwig-less Diamond Sea

I dont think thurston had his ludwig phaser with him for diamond sea.
- holy-reberb!!

this came up in the Toronto show thread, thought I'd pose the question, on recent (Nurse and this tour if it's being played) is Thurston using his MXR Phase90 for Diamond Sea?
When they played it on the Nurse tour I didn't see any equipment that Chris Lawrence dosn't have listed...so I'm ASSUMING it was the MXR responsible for the infamous 'yayayayayaya'.....???

scott v 08.15.2006 01:49 PM

When was the Diamond Sea played during the Nurse Tour???

last time they played that was 1996... perhaps they've tried soundchecking with it...

Ludwig phaser is abit different and unique than an mxr phase 90 because i believe it can also mix other effects to mimick a flanger which is different than a straight phaser...

i don't even know if they own a ludwig phasetron anymore, both of band's were stolen in the great theft of 1999.

mooger_fooger 08.15.2006 01:55 PM

There's been some arguement about this Me and my roomate went to the Toronto show, both us and our bass player, remember seeign Diamond Sea...according to CLawrence, and a few others on here, we're wrong. Now I could accept that __I___ was having memory troubles (i smoke pot, it happens :) ) but I find it hard to belive we ALL had a Diamond Sea 'trip-that-never-happened' ESPECIALLY when our bass player has a good memory for trivial details (not that sweeing Diamond Sea live is trivial or anything)

scott v 08.15.2006 02:03 PM

Don't know what to say... i wasn't there... though i don't even think that thurston had a guitar in the tuning of EGDGED (for Diamond Sea) on the Nurse Tour.

may have to ask the band directly if they did indeed play the song.

mooger_fooger 08.15.2006 02:17 PM

I hadn't condsidered that route...I mean, I'm not a terribly proud person, so it's not a matter of personal pride no gloating rights (eg 'haha I saw DS live and you havm't) it's just a matter of trying to prove I'm not insane...that this did in fact happen...I don't know, I just can't see wasting the bands time with such a petty question, but IF they did in fact play it, Thurston was DEFINITLY using his Phase 90 (speed was turned down after playing Dude Ranch Nurse to 'Ludwig' it up a bit..)

Lipslikewindows 08.15.2006 02:22 PM

ECgGCF = new tuning I've been having a lot of fun with lately.

i remember them talking about playing it again, but they haven't. i used to think it was an outlandish idea to dedicate that much time of the set to an 'old' song, but w/ the 15+ minute expressways etc they've been doing, i think a 2nd encore 'diamond sea' could work for sure.

fluxequalsrad 08.16.2006 12:01 PM

theres no way in shit that they played diamond sea in toronto on nurse tour. I was there. After dude ranch i think they played Drunken butterfly...

lemme check...

here's setlist!:::

were they? I dont see them on the list.

mooger_fooger 08.16.2006 02:32 PM

Hmmm....this is beginning to become a hotly debated subject, both on here and at home, as I have began to accept the fact that maybe I'm crazy...but my bandmates are insisting I'm not, that we did in fact hear diamond sea...I'm not even sure which side of the arguement I'm on anymore, b/c I recall losing my voice after chanting "diamond sea, diamond sea.." and then erupting into a massive scream upon the opening notes....So.....we'll just drop the subject and assume I'm crazy...however.....there's still a Shadow Of a Doubt in my mind...

atari 2600 08.16.2006 02:37 PM

lay off the mota???

Maybe at the time you just confused Diamond Sea and Expressway... they're kinda similar, a little, maybe... or something

mooger_fooger 08.16.2006 02:58 PM

Well....I was about to buy into my craziness when an email bolstered my hopes, my friend states 'Rich, I hoisted you up to crowd surf during the noise jam, trust me, you're not going crazy'....the debate continues...

fluxequalsrad 08.16.2006 08:25 PM

Expressway has a noise jam....so does alot of SY songs.

mooger_fooger 08.17.2006 09:34 AM

Sadly I've come to accept that no-one here was actually at the show in question, or if they were did not sit out the encore(s)...as they DID in fact play Diamond Sea that evening (and no, not RIGHT after Dude Ranch, I was just referencing to the use of the Phase 90)

max 08.17.2006 09:56 AM

I think Steve could save us all. Mr. Shelley let us know!

mooger_fooger 08.17.2006 10:03 AM

Steve could save us all...with his glorious tom rolls :)

holy-reverb!! 08.17.2006 11:56 AM

someone should post this question in the question thread.

doctor dan 08.17.2006 12:06 PM

i thaught that they dont use the ludwig anymore because it was a casualty of the tragic gig theft? i read or heard somewhere it was one of the casualties. Itd be quality if they started playing diamond sea again tho. itd be a shame if it was stolen- that thing was really fucking rare, its worth a few grand...

mooger_fooger 08.17.2006 12:16 PM

It's been considered....I just don't have the pride to bother posting the question...I know I saw/heard it, it was one of those monumental-cemented-my-faith-in-a-band-I-already-loved moments, chanting for Diamond Sea, and then seeing/hearing it...mostly seeing/hearing it..I could give a shit less if I was shouting for it, that's just a coincidence..

atari 2600 08.17.2006 12:40 PM

mooger_fooger, your writing makes little sense. You referenced Chris Lawrence in your first post yet you seemingly don't know about the concert chronology.
http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/cc/2004.html

I have the recording from Kool Haus '04 & The Diamond Sea was not played.
It's also not listed as being played in the concert chronology.
http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/cc/080504.html
A 16 + minute version of Expressway was played. I included it on Atari's Picks #3.

mooger_fooger 08.17.2006 01:04 PM

Like I said in my earlier posts (read before you bitch) I HATE to disagree with Chris Lawrence, and lately I'm beginning to think there is a shoddy bootleg of this show going around BUT, I was THERE, I've got the ticket stub, and they DID play Diamond Sea....I'm not trying to be vindictive, nor an asshole, but they did play this at the Toronto 2004 show.........so here comes the hate posts...

atari 2600 08.17.2006 01:13 PM

Yes, the concert chronology is not always correct, but the show I have is the complete thing.
The show fills up 2 80 min cds & they play the longest Expressway they have in a long while on it. (I forget where that even longer 32-minute (?) one was played.) The show in D.C. shortly after and the '05 show in Nagoya with Afrirampo along for the song contain particularly long Expressways as well.
I also remember threads about this show written directly after people attended it in which reviews & pictures were shared & I don't remember anyone writing that The Diamond Sea was played, nor was it written about when the torrent for the show was seeded.
Of course, even though these are facts, you'll still insist that they played for over two hours & then they played The Diamond Sea as well.

mooger_fooger 08.17.2006 01:37 PM

the enthusiasm for arguing web based facts with haughty fansite scenesters has really lost it's appeal, I'll just continue to bicker this with my comrades, all of whom have ticket stubs for the show, not just links and bootlegs :)Hooray atari! You won! Curiosity killed!

holy-reverb!! 08.17.2006 02:31 PM

I have the setlist from that show in my room and its not on there. The only song from washing machine is skip tracer, i think.

the mere fact that you do not understand contractions

it is = it's
possessive = its

is one reason not to have any interaction with you at all.

suck on that.

mooger_fooger 08.17.2006 02:40 PM

You know, Reverb, I don't doubt you have the setlist, I just doubt this would be on the setlist...'cuz if it was this arguement would have been solved days ago...but as I said, I've accepted defeat, 'it was never played'

holy-reverb!! 08.17.2006 02:42 PM

oh im not sayin anything against something that anyone might have said. im just saying whats on the setlist that was printed of and used by the band. I wish it was played, but i will accept skip tracer.

mooger_fooger 08.17.2006 02:43 PM

Thanks for the grammar lesson Atari, You're a saint (K)

I have friends (very good ones that i can trust and are SY fans) who went to this show and they've confirmed that the Diamond Sea was NOT played.... NOT!

atari 2600 08.17.2006 03:33 PM

Sonic Youth are in such a habit of playing triple encores though, scott v, I'm just not sure that we can trust your information.

hehe

holy-reverb!! 08.17.2006 03:39 PM

this went from, "do you need a ludwig phaser for diamond sea." to, "was diamond sea played two years ago in toronto."

The dude just wanted to show off the fact that he knew the Ludwig phaser was used on The Diamond Sea & that was the genesis of the topic in the first place. He mistakenly wrote the other comments out of his ass & now stubbornly insists it to be true. And here we are.

Daddylikes 08.17.2006 03:56 PM

I was at that show.

Diamond Sea was infact played....right before Destroyer.

i get the set lists straight from the band after the shows, as they were played -- the concert chronology reflects these set lists, and the sets don't lie!

you, however, i'm not sure...

top 40 squeeze 08.18.2006 12:24 AM

yeah, and after the diamond sea... they totally played free bird... it was totally sweet.

krastian 08.18.2006 12:31 AM

Not to mention that Dark Star tease in between.

spirale 08.18.2006 03:01 AM

...and I WANNA BE YR DOG as 4th encore...

mooger_fooger 08.18.2006 09:28 AM

My apologies to anyone I've pissed off or somehow offended with this thread...I'm dead wrong, and I'm sorry
