Are you a collector?

I collect:

1. 8/16mm cameras. 18 to date.

2. Documentaries & films, especially War & Kid films like: Little Criminals, Stand by me, Fresh, Virgin Suicides, Tex, Basketball diaries, Bugsy Malone, Kids, Bully, Ken Park, Pups, River's Edge etc.

3. Water pistols and replica guns in all shapes, colours and sizes.

4. Art

5. Computer viruses (Worms, Trojan horses, Macro's) including the notorious "I love you" one.
Here's is a link to lists of thousands. Wikipedia

As depicted in Star Trek.

I love old 8mm and 16mm film. I wanted to make a short film using either for class, but I don't own either. I love old footage, there's so much more... art in it, especially for short films. Very visually satisfying, for me.

Erm... I've just opened an email from you. Should I be virus checking my PC each day for the next week or two?

I collect SY records, CDs, books, etc. I bet there's not many around here do that.

You don't have to worry about that. They're not on my computer at work or at home. I have them encapsulated on disc and stashed in a very safe place. I only use them to launch attacks on serious hackers who jeopardise my existance. I've dealt with them appropriately in the past... when the time was right.

Mid-century modern furniture

I used to collect toys, but storage and display became a problem.
Too much clutter.

Norma J 08.17.2006 06:29 AM

Very big words, Porkman. Very big. So big they barely fit on your screen?

Do you mean like: If you want to run away, go to page 26. If you want to stab the troll in the face, go to page 59.

Gamebooks... Drool...

gmku 08.17.2006 08:32 AM

LPs & CDs.

Rock T-shirts.

Used to collect German beer glasses but that's become less interesting.

porkmarras 08.17.2006 08:38 AM

Apart from the obvious(records) i go through phases when i buy loads of junk
from charity shops, junk shops, markets etc etc.I have a think for vintage music magazines in particular.

gmku 08.17.2006 08:40 AM

Oh, yeah, I like vintage music publications, too. Spin was pretty good for a while, late 80s to early 90s. I have some back issues from when I read it a lot back then, and I'm always on the watch for good issues from that era. Alternative Press, believe it or not, used to be good back then, too.

porkmarras 08.17.2006 08:43 AM

why is everyone signing in as invisible now? What a bunch of invisible fashion victims you are!

Savage Clone 08.17.2006 08:43 AM

Invisible is the new black.

LittlePuppetBoy 08.17.2006 08:44 AM

I used to collect animal books (when I was younger), but since all the information is pretty much the same, there's not much of a point in buying more. I bought most for the pictures anyway.

porkmarras 08.17.2006 08:45 AM

Erm....i forgot to give porn a mention............

Tokolosh 08.17.2006 08:47 AM

Maybe you should start a thread on that. :)

gmku 08.17.2006 08:47 AM

Or not.

Savage Clone 08.17.2006 08:47 AM

I would say that I collect underground comics, but I more sort of "accumulate" them. Same with books. In both cases, I only treat a few of them with the kind of care that I treat things I collect more seriously; trying to keep them in optimum condition, obsessive archiving/careful storage, etc.
So yeah, I buy a lot of these and have a lot of them, but wouldn't call myself a collector per se.
Not like records and furniture.

I've been tempted to collect comics again, like I did when I was a kid. But I also remember how obsessive I was, and I know I would be again. One obsession (records) is enough to keep me broke and miserable.

Indeed.
Gotta focus.
I learned that a few years ago.
Time, money and space are all important factors.

I think what toilet meant is that it's a lame assumption that just because something is shot on 8/16mm that that bestows some sort of inherent artyness on it. Which I would concur with. Sure 8/16mm is more aesthetically pleasing than video on the whole, in my opinion at least, but I wouldn't claim that it automatically had more artistic merit than something shot on video.

Hip Priest 08.17.2006 11:25 AM

Apart from old books,

Commemorative medals (not military, OK?) ie stuff commemorating events etc.

Trade tokens.

Anything concerning local history.

And we have loads of antique prints, boxes and other stuff around the house.
