I don't know. I appreciate Green Day because I have good childhood memories of them (from when Dookie came out), but now they and their new teeny bopper fanbase disgusts me.

The only songs out of these that I know
are Basket Case & Boulevard of Broken Dreams & I think I know Longview.

I don't like the way they arrange power chord progressions, I don't like Billie Joe's voice, & their rhythm section is utterly boring.

BJ even talks smack about Sonic Youth to boot.

I don't quite understand the disgust people feel towards GD. They're rubbish or passable, depending on my mood, but people (especially SY fans) seem to single them out for hatred. Surely there are more deserving targets of the ill-directed venom of people here?

Those two should naturally appear in a line of thought together, because without Nirvana becoming hot shit & selling big numbers, the Green Day machine would have never been borne into the marketplace. And yeah, Green Day are like a non-threatening (with the soul sucked out) version of Nirvana in many ways. When one considers all the bands that the success of Green Day have spawned, it's a bit like a lot of '50s rock with the endless parade of seemingly neutered safe-for-your-daughter performers.

Like it or not, there's a whole group of people (the vast majority in fact) that just like music because it sounds nice.

We're the exception.

...or 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's. There's nothing that Green Day do that's worse than any other pop band over the last 50 years.

Green Day fucking suck. One of the worst bands to ever grace the punk rock scene. Annoying vocals, simple chord progressions, asshole attitude. Green Day has it all.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Green Day. I think they're generally an obnoxious and talent-deficient band. But if anyone thinks they can make some kind of autonomous ruling on it, they're wrong. Most people like them. So they're doing something right.

As for the poll, I picked Minority because it's the most nostalgiac for me.

Green Day is a pop band. Like Westlife, which I can appreciate, or Fall Out Boy, which I do not. Pop bands are not 'sucky' by default.

I had never thought of it quite like that, but yeah, it is kinda like how Pat Boone came out as a "safer" version of Elvis...

The difference, though is that while Green Day's success hinged on that of Nirvana (even Billy Joe Armstrong basically came out and said that when they were on Behind The Music), the band themselves were not manufactured...they were totally DIY in the beginning and I think they deserve and least a little bit of cred for that.

I picked "Basket Case", becuz it reminds me of how I knew this one kid in junior high who was always singing their songs...I would have picked "Welcome To Paradise", but I didn't see it on there, or "Geek Stink Breath", or "Brain Stew" if it had "Jaded" attached to it...

Yes. All those overly commercial pop punk/Hot Topic bands that were inspired by Green Day. Nothing but a bunch of posers.

When all of my friends listened to Good Charlotte, I listened to Green Day. This was before American Idiot. Probably 2003. I haven't listened to them since but something tells me i won't like them even though i thought they were great when i was 11. It's like tween-punk. It's the step after Hilary Duff and before The Distillers. Which isn't really all that big.

Actually he got the wrong name, because that is the bassist Mike (he tried to correct him when he wasn't paying attention), Tre is the drummer.

You're right. I knew it was the bassist but I don't know their names, so I took his word for it.
