Tom Waits Appreciation Thread
He's not for all but he is definately the best in my book
for about the past 5 years I have obsessed about this man and thought that i would never be able to see him luckily i got word of his 8 show tour that went down two weeks ago i got online the morning the tickets went on sale and got one to mmphis (they sold out in 10 minutes) its the greatest thing I have ever seen in my life better than sonic youth with jim orourke id like to know what you guys think of this great great man ![]() |
Can't go wrong with Waits. I love the guy. Got Blue Valentines about a year ago, and I instantly fell in love. He's a ton of fun, and I have lots of respect for the guy. I hope I get the chance to see him live someday.
But yeah: "Take of your skin, and dance around in your bones" |
i like him but he sounds like a constipated buffalo.
|
yeah love tom waits. i really like some fo the films he is in as well.
|
I love this guy!
Where's the poll with all his releases or the movies he's been in? |
I have six of his albums, with each one I'm suprised by how much I like them.
|
I've got none of his records, but I do quite like his stuff and he's got his own thing going on, which is cool.
He was very good in that film, I thought - was it called 'Down by Law'? |
Down by law was great!
Coffee and cigarettes was great with Iggy Pop and so was Name of the Rose. There are quite a few more including cameo roles, but I can't remember them right now. |
agree tom waits is def cool - alas as he rarely comes to europe shall have to strike it lucky on a trip to the US 1 time i hope... know he played paris about 4 years ago and london a couple of years later but both sold out in literally seconds! i sure hope he proves me wrong and does come back and plays more shows... he's definitely one of those singers who goes well with a drop of bourbon.

Waits is genuinely talented and it's obvious that he puts a lot of thought into what he does. I mean I really think he is a great writer, which isn't something I say often. He's an acquired taste, but definitely not in the category of performers who skate by on quirkiness alone. I'm pretty jealous that you got to see him. I don't doubt what you said about it being better than Sonic Youth.
|
Awww, I never saw this thread. I'm gonna 'bump' it up because Tom Waits is great. He was also in a Bukowski docoumentary, which is how I stumbled across this thread (looking for "what are you reading" thread).
|
love him.
|
he's real good alright
|
Bump. Rediscovering Tom Waits at the moment, he's a really talented songwriter. Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs are awesome. I bought Mule Variations years ago and gave it to my brother (who is a massive fan now) haha. Blue Valentine is also great !
|
I don't think about Tom Waits.
|
tom waits is crap. so much new great music.,yet quirky pinanno white blues booze grandpa gets revered as somehow still worth giving two fifths of a fuck about.

Yes, he was great in Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus ! I'd also like to see something new from Jim Jarmusch with him. |
what is it with you and farts? its such a turn off. ok maybe not... but... no... it is... i mean i can maybe get a cautious quarter boner for like 5 seconds about it but it soon dissipates.
have you ever found anyone to satisfy your fart lust? is that something you've actually engaged in before? don't be too graphic... |
"A skeleton faced ghoul smokes black opium and gets wild with sex and drug crazed zombies. Some college kids wander into his cemetery and get brainwashed and forced to smoke opium and engage in bizarre mind control rites. Used at college drug parties to freak out noobs due to its trippy dialog and imagery. An insane 1998 avant-garde, satanic mind control freakshow film."

but have you ever engaged in some sort of fart session with someone in real life? have you put up adds in london phoneboxes about it?
|
Phone boxes? When I have the internet?
|
Cause I like to sleep until the crack of noon
Midnight howlin' at the moon |
I actually like Tom Waits better as an actor. My fav. was Rensfield (Dracula):
![]() ![]() |
"My sweet little whorish Nora I did as you told me, you dirty little girl, and pulled myself off twice when I read your letter." This is followed by "I wish you would smack me or flog me even. Not in play, dear, in earnest and on my naked flesh. I wish you were strong, strong, dear, and had a big full proud bosom and big fat thighs. I would love to be whipped by you, Nora love!"
"At every fuck I gave you your shameless tongue came bursting out through your lips and if I gave you a bigger stronger fuck than usual, fat dirty farts came spluttering out of your backside. You had an arse full of farts that night, darling, and I fucked them out of you, big fat fellows, long windy ones, quick little merry cracks and a lot of tiny little naughty farties ending in a long gush from your hole." "It is wonderful to fuck a farting woman when every fuck drives one out of her. I think I would know Nora's fart anywhere. I think I could pick hers out in a roomful of farting women. It is a rather girlish noise not like the wet windy fart which I imagine fat wives have. It is sudden and dry and dirty like what a bold girl would let off in fun in a school dormitory at night. I hope Nora will let off no end of her farts in my face so that I may know their smell also." COPYRIGHT THE ESTATE OF JAMES JOYCE |
Rain Dogs and some of his other albums are awesome. The rest I'm not so sure about.
