Emerson, Lake & Palmer
THE greatest band ever? Perhaps? Personally I go on binges, sometimes my prog listening takes me to VDGG, or perhaps even Spring and Caravan, most often Yes (the SECOND greatest band ever?), PMF, Le Orme & the stellar Italian scene, yet often I binge and purge on ELP to the point of near insanity...... S/T, TARKUS, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery - all exception. The live records, Pictures and Welcome, also as good! Got no problem with Works either....... a spinning piano? Greg Lake? Keith Emerson? Carl Palmer? Truly this is rock and roll....... if I was able to build a time machine and go back and follow them around like the Dead.......
Fucking Tarkus man. Perchance if I had twenty minutes to live I'd spend that time listening to that one epic track..... perchance I wouldn't as I'd spend my final moments with my wife and she loathes ELP...... you can't fault her for this though, many have yet to grasp just how epic this band is. I myself felt so overwhelmed upon hearing Brain Salad Surgery - flawless album, yet now I know they're capable of so much more....... ![]() |
can fuck off, quite frankly
|
That's insanity...... look at this amazing picture of Emerson and Bob Moog.....
![]() Or this one of Emerson warming up in an empty stadium....... ![]() Or any of these other awesome pictures...... truly the greatest heroes of our time........ ![]() ![]() |
That's a fucking TIGER.....

Watcher, I admire your spirit. I've just started dipping my toes in the prog/synth pool, will give ELP some time in the future. BTW, I never knew what your signature pic was, just downloaded "Inventions for Electric Guitar" a while ago, havn't listened to the whole thing yet, seems cool though...

What do you expect from this bloke? He thinks punk embraces bands that are fucking not.

Excellent news!! Truth be told, it took me longer to recognize the greatness of ELP than any other prog band - I took to bands like Trettargia Kriget, Le Orme, Van Der Graaf Generator like a fish to water...... but ELP was a different story, and then all of a sudden it hit me - everyone who bitches about their excess is wrong. Bands need to wear capes and kimonos, and have floating pianos and have drums that are so heavy they need to be assembled by a crane, etc. That's what rock and roll should be about, not some smelly show in a mouse ridden basement with some shitty freegans serving moldy potatoes........ Honestly do yourself a favour and listen to Tarkus - just the song, the rest of the album is a little harder to enjoy for not-yet-converts. you'll be happy you did!!! |

Are you still on about that Napalm Death discussion that happened months ago? Bro, your scope of punk is incredibly narrow...... punk is supposed to be about non-conformity. Punk isn't even good most of the time anyway - it's Pennywise and fucking Avril Lavigne and Crass, all of which blow - I was actually doing Napalm Death a disservice....... see that's why prog rock is better - is embraces things like stabbing a hammond organ with a knife, or covering Pictures At An Exhibition....... |
Ahh, nice to see a thread about em!
I've digged em since I was like 12-13. Carl Palmer has inspired me and my drumming a lot aswell. Tarkus has to be the most beautiful albumcover ever made? ![]() |

Crass? You llump Crass with Avril and Pennywise? Punk is a nostalgia trip. Punk rapidly became a conformity trip all its own. That said, these women fucking kill it http://evgrieve.com/2011/07/more-fro...-today-in.html |
Certainly they were a loud outfit live for just three pieces. Also a talented trio. Yes was probably more popular back in the day but for my money I thought ELP was the better band.

I completely agree!!! I'm thinking of buying one of those record frames for gatefold LPs and framing my copy along with Nursry Crime!! I think when I buy a house I'm going to have a room devoted to the seventies, shag carpeting, one of those chairs that looks like a hollowed out egg, and a hi-fi....... Nothing else!!! |

First off, is there any reason for such needless hostility? Second, re read what I said and what you said....... You've really made an error here br-oh wait I guess I can't use that term........ Third, you like Avril Lavigne. Is this entire board a fucking joke? I can't tell if you people are serious or not with these opinions. |
says the man who giving 'serious'(?) consideration to the idea that ELP might be the greatest band ever.

Breaking this down to it's core elements:
Grown men into mall punk vs. Progressive rock You can read that and not feel ashamed of yourself? |
no. i don't like avril lavigne and listen to one trillion punk bands your useless, old man-like revisionism won't ever allow you to discover.

Not liking ELP hardly equates to not like Prog R. There's tonnes of Prog that I like. I just think ELP are appalling. |
Ha ha? Funny board you guys have here......
|
I thought it was a perfectly reasonable point
|
Yours was fine..... I didn't refresh the board, it was directed at that other guy...........
|
it is a funny board ''we'' have. you are under the impression i like avril lavigne. haha what a funny old board.
|
I know!!! I can't believe where I get these crazy ideas.... this thread, that thread......... are you joking? Like I give a cat's whiskers......... I don't have the time or energy in determining if you're being sarcastic or not.......

Back on track.......
I mean, these guys destroy me every time. A rainbow? With a mysterious crystal? Thanks very much I definitely want whatever radical double album you're cooking up...... Is that Shiva I see? ![]() |
I feel like this thread can still be salvaged despite the recent embarrassments that took place - I don't even really care if you don't like them, that's your loss, all I'm trying to do is challenge the popular consensus that their music wasn't good - I mean, anything you read about ELP has more scathing criticism of their excess, but what can you expect from a group of excellent musicians who flawlessly melded classical music in with contemporary rock? Humility? If you could play your instrument that well (be it bass, drums or giant modular synthesizer) you'd fell the need to wear a fucking kimono to the grocery store too.
Now, I think like Opeth and many other excellent and successful progressive rock groups, I find that their fans are possibly the worst part. Have you ever spent any time reading the reviews of their album mastering on amazon.com? I was thinking about upgrading my edition of Pictures A An Exhibition to the double disc set as mine lacks a) the studio version and b) the bonus live disc and so I set out to read the reviews - these weirdos are complaining about the remastering in the most horrifically anal retentive way!! Why!! I'm sure it sounds fine you crazy people!!! The other thing is when people talk about how Hendrix almost joined, but instead died - that would have been terrible!! I can't even imagine how dull that would have been with four virtuosos wailing away like a bunch of cock-eyed bandits...... three is the perfect number!! |
I used to like Pictures at an Exhibition a lot before I heard the original version. I was quite disappointed when I noticed thereīs so many great pieces in the original version ELP didnīt make version. Somehow I havenīt listened other bands material, maybe heard some song in the radio. Have to listen someday.

...and the first thread on this forum about Plastic People of The Universe, a band 100 times better than this crap. I do like me some PFM, though.
|
Well great man happy to hear all that stuff about you...... Next time you can even tell me about these trillion bands I've never heard of, we'll make like a fun day out of it..........
|
Nope never saw ELP live. My best buddy did and he reported it to me as well as different publications back in the seventies....
