The Drummers Thread
Anything having to do w/ drums, post here. Pics, discussions, etc.
Tell us whatever you want the board to know about drumming. Who's your favorite? What knid of set do you own (how mwany pieces)? What hardware do you use? What's your favorite cymbal brand? I mean anything you can think of about drums & drumming, post it here. Ill give some of my info to get us started; Favorite: Danny Carey My set: Pearl Export Series, 4 piece, Tama hi-hat stand, Yamaha & Pacific cymbal stands, Pacific bass pedal, Paiste hi-hat cymbals, Sabian 18" crash ride, Zildjian 17" crash. Years of drumming: 8 Alright, now discuss. :) |
when i was joining band in 5th grade i wanted to play the drums and my dad wouldn't let me that little fuck.
|
That little fuck, indeed. Why wouldn't he let you?
|
My set: Alesis SR-16
Favorite Drummers/composers of drum beats: Steve Shelley, Damon Che, Ennio Morricone, Colm O'Ciosig (I messed up the spelling, I know) |
Steve Shelley:
He is the one drummer that I try & immulate. His fantastic drum rolls mezmerize me whenever I hear a SY song. |
I have a 6 piece Pearl Session Series in this color with Sabian and Zildjian cymbals. My all time favorite drummer is John Bonham. I have been playing for 14 years. It gets me off.

I've been wondering where you were Krastian. Finally, I can have a meaningful conversation.
Drumming definetly releases tension of any kind. I've always wanted a DW set. But, Pearl is a great studio sounding drum set. |
Yeah DW's are nice. Dave Grohl played those (not necessarily exclusively). He's prob. my second favorite drummer even though he's been the most influential to me....that shit changed my life.
|
I never saw any footage of Dave playing DW's, so that is an interesting fact to me. You mostly saw him play Tama's. Yes, Dave was my first inspiring drummer. I'll always remember what Kurt said about why they picked Dave as their new drummer, "He would the drums harder than anyone I've ever seen."
|
Here is a nice site that shows a bunch of Dave's sets.

I love this picture of Dave....I have it on my wall.

Fuck Yeah! That's a classic photo. I haven't seen it in a while though. Thanks
I'll go check out that site right now. I'll be back |
hereīs a pic of our set
![]() itīs a TAMA thatīs all i know to be serious, i donīt know a shit about drums or drumming but my favourite drummers are: s.shelley, Saunier and that dude from The Neptune ( his name was something like Butcher, haha) |
Yeah Steve is the man.....I think he shines the best on Daydream.
|
Krastian:
That was a pretty cool little site. Thanks for the link. |
Does anyone else want to discuss drumming? I'm in that knid of mood.
|
When I was a boy, I was a triangle virtuoso.
At the age of 12, I performed the famous Babbitt Triangle Concerto with The Philadelphia Orchestra. But I quit that life - the money and women were more than I could handle at such a young age. |
I wish that's how things were in my life.

damon che was the don caballero drummer, right?... listening to their stuff right now he's amazing... |
Sigue Sigue Sputnik had two drummers playing identically, the aim being to achieve the impression of 'a robot kicking down a door'.
I thought you'd like to know. |
Didn't the Greatful Dead use 2 drummers at one point?
|
Quote:
I don't know. But Adam and the Ants did. Either way, neither of them were trying to achieve the effect of 'a robot kicking down a door' like Sigue Sigue Sputnik were. That's the difference. |
That does sound like a unique way of making a sound affect for drums.
|
I used to play drums, but my body won't let me anymore. If I play for extended periods of time, my wrists freeze up and inhibit the movement and hurt. I actually went to physical therapy for this and they told me I get calcification in my joints. I was never good anyway but drums are so fun.

Well, the drummers in question (Chris Kavanagh and Ray Mayhew) carried off the job with some aplomb, it must be said. I like a Brazillian samba band called Olodum. When I saw them live, there were sixteen people on stage, twelve of whom were drummers of one kind or another. That was a good noise to hear. I like the druming of Kevin Hyde from the band Gaye Bykers on Acid - straightforward, loud and no-nonsense. Mr Hyde seemed quite suited to a life of hitting things with sticks, and he and the rest of the band were also very good in the film they made. 'All Hung Up' is a mighty single, but they did many fine songs. Sometimes they crossed dressed and appeared as Lesbian Dopeheads on Mopeheads (get it?!?!?!?!). |
I'm glad I made this thread. I'm learning something everyday from these great board members.

Yep....Mickey Hart played alongside Bill Kreutzmann. I think Mickey left the band and came back in 1974 (which is arguably their best tour year). The two played together all the way up until Jerry died I'm pretty sure. |
Thanks for confirming Krastian. I saw a documentary of the Dead once, & it might be the footage of that tour that you were describing.
|
Was it The Grateful Dead Movie? If so, then yeah it is......great 5 disc set too.
|
I'll tell you who was massively under-rated as a drummer, and that was Nod from Fields of the Nephilim. Some fantastic drumming from Nod, eg on Moonchild, Psychonaut, and The Watchman. By coincidence, all of the videos for the aforementioned tracks can be found at this YouTube page!
|
Krastian:
I can't recall. I just remember watching a video at a friends house & the video of them both drumming was on. But, it did sound pretty fucking good. |
Has anyone seen this reissue of Keith Moon's "Pictures of Lily" set?
![]() They are limited addition (obvi) and surely they would be tempting to play for anyone who bought a set. It would be pretty cool to have, but you'd have to be a bit nuts to go around gigging with it......don't get me wrong, I'd take one!!! ![]() http://www.premier-percussion.com/ne...le.asp?id=3790 http://www.noblepr.co.uk/Press_Relea...es_of_lily.htm |

I'm a casual drummer. Love the craft, love the instrument, but play strings first. Getting better..... I'm working to get good enough to perform/record flawlessly. I have a variety of drums.... mainly Fibes sets, some additional Gretsch Snares and love Bosphorus cymbals and older Zildjian's (namely 70's hollow logos).
I like a lot of the typical, iconic drummers. Especially S. Shelly (pocket grooves), Tim Alexander (epic tom roto tom grooves), Chad Smith (pop/funk grooves)... I also like these threes sound and tones too. Allman Brothers band usually played with two drummers. I think Grateful Dead might have had a drummer and percussionist. |
Girls Against Boys had two bass players.

So fucking what? |
