Help an old man out.

I keep hearing emo mentioned here, but I'm not sure what it means.

Is this accurate?

Washing Machine 09.02.2006 09:48 AM

hahaha (if only we didn't know what it meant)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo_%28music%29
This will explain everything.....

I would read it myself, but all this 'Is it post-hardcore, original emo or screamo?' stuff bores the crap out of me, but this is (if anyone is interested) in typical Wikipedia style the most comprehensive guide to this overused and lazy term.

Alex's Trip 09.02.2006 10:05 AM

*sigh* lol

Alex's Trip 09.02.2006 10:08 AM

Well they are!

Edit: from Urban Dictionary:

Annoying Emo Kid:

those kids who regularly max out daddy's credit card at hot topic and tell everyone how depressed they are and that they cut their arms up every night wanting to die (ok...where are the scars?). they only listen to 'underground' bands adn immediately stop when someone they think is popular or preppy starts to listen to them, or they see them on mtv (which they claim never to watch, but they still do). they intentionally do stupid and rebellious things trying to make authority figures mad, thinking it's cool. these people are attention-craving, tasteless, abnoxious emo kids. anything popular is completely disregarded to them. they also tell ppl that they think drugs are sooooooooooo cool, but are scared to do them, but do them anyway because they think it'll make them cool

Its all so stupid! I can't personally be bothered keeping up with current definitions for things. I have seen so many arguments started over things like this. People who argue over the differences between post-hardcore and emo, people who theaten to burn the house of someone who calls their favourite band Metal-core instead of Metal. Its so funny to listen to!
The unfortunate thing is that good bands get brought down by so-called 'scenes' that they never tryed to be apart of in the beginning. Why is it so important that everyone has a label?
I agree with the Urban Dictionary thing though Alex's Trip! There is a many people (including a FEW people on this site - the majority being very open minded) that hate anything popular. I'm not ashammed to admit I love My Chemical Romance and System of a Down but at the same time I love countless less popular bands like Be Your own pet, Kersera, Cat Power, Merzbow and im really into modern classical music. I suck up all genres like a musical hoar! I think the real problem here is people being to restrictive with their musical tastes!

Well as a 15 year old sophomore, I kind of naturally 'stay with it'.

Pookie 09.02.2006 10:46 AM

For me it's just weird hearing emo used as a term to insult people without really knowing what it means.

Alex's Trip 09.02.2006 10:48 AM

The Emo bashing bandwagon is over though. It stopped about a month ago, at least with people that I know.

Thats good!:D nothing worse than people being bashed, it leaves scars that manifest themselves in teen angst! *shudders*.

Thankfully my friends and I have always been the alternative to the alternative kids, not cool enough to hang with the cool kids and too positive and lacking in angst for the alt kids. Hence ive been left alone to do as I please. LOL

Cantankerous 09.02.2006 11:05 AM

that was accurate about 4 years ago, spookie. we call those kids hipsters now.

Alex's Trip 09.02.2006 11:11 AM

Hipster/Scenester same thing...

Cantankerous 09.02.2006 11:13 AM

scenesters lean more towards the emo look though.

Alex's Trip 09.02.2006 11:14 AM

Yeah, that is true.

Cantankerous 09.02.2006 11:20 AM

Alex's Trip 09.02.2006 11:21 AM

We don't have a running jacket trend around here, but the rest of that is pretty spot on.

Edit: I actually lawl'd when I saw that second picture.

Agreed. I find it pretty narrow-minded and arrogant if people restrict their musical tastes, for the sake of trying to be different. The worst kind of altero is the one that refuses to listen to undeniably good quality, old or popular music

porkmarras 09.02.2006 12:56 PM

Pookie, try googling the definition of screamo.

HaydenAsche 09.02.2006 03:31 PM

I get called a hipster and I look nothing like that first picture. I'm just an elitist bastard. Emo is the worst trend in history.

Cantankerous 09.02.2006 03:35 PM

like much of the things on this planet, i really couldn't give a shit less.

HaydenAsche 09.02.2006 03:37 PM

1/4 of the posts in a thread about something you care less about is a bit much, no?

Cantankerous 09.02.2006 03:44 PM

i'm just contributing. i'm being a model fucking citizen here.

HaydenAsche 09.02.2006 03:45 PM

You always have been.

Cantankerous 09.02.2006 03:51 PM

tell me something i don't know.
better yet, go take a shower, greaseball. i need you to look as clinical as possible.

HaydenAsche 09.02.2006 03:52 PM

I decided just to shave and wash my face. I can't find my camera. Find it for me.

Cantankerous 09.02.2006 04:29 PM

it's up your ass.

HaydenAsche 09.02.2006 04:30 PM

First place I checked. All I found were some car keys and the WMDs.

krastian 09.03.2006 04:18 AM

The first time I ever heard the term emo was in conjunction with Piebald in 1998. I hate when people say that Fugazi is emo....fuck a' label.

jon boy 09.03.2006 04:26 AM

when i see the emo kids, i laugh.

_slavo_ 09.03.2006 05:28 AM

when I see the emo kids, i vomit

Screamo

Characteristic of the genre are hardcore screaming vocals and harmonized guitars. Breakdowns in screamo songs are often slower and more melodic than in other genres, less of a "beatdown" and more of an opportunity for introspection (and rest for the musicians). Other than that, it is fairly hard to classify (particularly since the rule about screaming vocals is bent fairly often).

porkmarras 09.03.2006 05:51 AM

This is apparently a typical screamo kid.

porkmarras 09.03.2006 05:51 AM

Or Richey 'Manic Street Preachers' Edwards, basically.

porkmarras 09.03.2006 05:53 AM

They only want you when you're seventeen. When you're twentyone, you're not fun.

Pookie 09.03.2006 05:57 AM

You're just trying to confuse me now with your sub-genres. Although I like the sound of emo-violence.

porkmarras 09.03.2006 05:59 AM

It's not my fault if i'm a 17 year old.

Pookie 09.03.2006 06:01 AM

Aside from the key chain, jumper & hair, I dress like the bloke in the first picture I posted.

What does this make me?

porkmarras 09.03.2006 06:02 AM

A screamo queen.

Pookie 09.03.2006 06:04 AM

My daughter called me a 'horrible queen' this morning.
