Best Record Of 2006 - The Story So Far...?

C'mon then, fuckers, let's have them. I'm genuinely interested here; stuff I might have missed, stuff you're obsessed with...

Provided it was released this year, let me here it! Literally... whatever... ANYTHING!!!

I'm going to get the ball rolling with the new Espers record - II. Despite its lack of originality it's really grabbed me more than most other releases this year.

I'll also throw down an honourable mention to Mono for their latest; it's very decent indeed.

Scene your little heart out, whatever - what's the best record of '06 so far?!

EDIT: Alriiight, okay... not neccessarily THE greatest sounds put to vinyl. Just your favourites from this year.

Savage Clone 09.07.2006 05:56 PM

The new Six Organs Of Admittance totally slays, but I would have to think about the "best."

The Raconteurs- Broken Boy Soldiers
Sonic Youth- Rather Ripped
Be Your Own Pet- s/t

those three come to mind

porkmarras 09.07.2006 06:06 PM

I can never name a best from year to year because there are times when my head just gets turned around by this of that. Most of the records i've bought this year are from disparate times and spaces in music so i can't really tell.

Glice 09.07.2006 06:11 PM

I'm in the same boat as Porkie. I've a feeling I haven't even bought a record released this year.

k-krack 09.07.2006 06:17 PM

obviously, RR
Flying Luttenbachers- Cataclysm.

i really havent had mioney to buy anything. i am looking forward to a few though: Silver Mt Zion- Fuck You Drakulas , Emily Haines' solo. Xiu Xiu-Air Force, Lullabye Arkestra- Ampgrave... and some others...(some of those are out)

I like that.We like that.

Glice 09.07.2006 06:22 PM

I've wracked the vaults of my mind. The only record that could faintly qualify would be a re-issue of the number stations box set. Which, in all honesty, would qualify for record of the year most years, regardless of the irrationality concerned, unless the Fall happen to be about that year.

DJ Rick 09.07.2006 07:23 PM

Pick either the 10" or the 7" by the best band that has begun in 2006, the Wooden Shjips

http://www.myspace.com/woodenshjips

http://www.woodenshjips.com/

http://www.sickthirst.com/]

Recommended to fans of the spacey psych, krauty artpunk, etc...Spacemen 3, Can, Residual Echoes, Monoshock, and the like.

Apparently, the band came up with their first three songs and made them into a 10-inch record which they shipped around for free to selected people. It took me a while to track one down. Then they made two more songs and put those out on the Sick Thirst 7-inch. Obviously possessors of superior obscure record collections, these guys make songs specifically to make great records. I don't even think they've played out yet.

Savage Clone 09.07.2006 08:04 PM

Thanks for the tip, DJ Rick! This is pretty great.

LittlePuppetBoy 09.07.2006 08:13 PM

nature scene 09.07.2006 09:24 PM

only one i have from this year is Be Your Own Pet... it's fun and all. There's gotta be something outstanding though right? Please don't say Rather Ripped.

HaydenAsche 09.07.2006 10:31 PM

Did someone say new Joanna? Details, PLZ.

Uhh...

Xiu Xiu - The Air Force is fantastic. Other than that there are a few mentionables.

Islands - Return to the Sea
New Yellow Swans

Пятхъдесят Шест 09.07.2006 10:34 PM

I really love the new Current 93 and....uh...hm

Its been sort of boring this year.

Everyneurotic 09.07.2006 10:35 PM

genghis tron - dead mountain mouth
gorgoroth - erm...forgot the name in latin
six organs - sun awakens
the vetiver album
byop
amt - have you seen the other side of the sky?

keiji haino and sitaar tah! - animamima
ovo - miastenia
flaming lips - at war with the mystics
scott walker - the drift
ooioo - taiga

rather ripped
xiu2 - the air force

yea i think that too.

Gulasch Noir 09.08.2006 07:33 AM

Hm, have yet to listen to Bardo Pond and Six Organs .... For sure! What comes into mind is Mudhoney - Under A billions Suns, this is pretty great and you got a free cd to the record!

Spectre Folk - Requiem for Ming Aralia.

That's all i can think of, but these Wooden Shjips guys seem to be pretty promising. Great video (second link) too!

gmku 09.08.2006 08:41 AM

I don't have very many 2006 records. I'm usually about a year or two behind at least. I'm sure in another few years I'll identify and pick up many I missed. That's how it usually works.

But so far I do have--and greatly enjoy--Liars-Drum's Not Dead, Rather Ripped, Double Leopards-A Hole is not True (2005?), and NNCK-Qvaris (2005?).

Iain 09.08.2006 11:13 AM

I don't think anything has blown me away that much this year. The new Six Organs is 'nice'. The side long track on it is...meh, OK.

Probably the best thing is Cortez Tha Killa by Sunroof! from that Sunroof/Mouthus/Double Leopards double LP. But that's only half a side of an LP. The rest is quite good but not that amazing or anything. I've bought plenty of neat stuff this year but most of it from 'the past'.

That Embryonnck thing just popped into my head. That was this year right?

Qvaris was 2005 I think, sometime around November if I recall. Get the Embryonnck one if you liked that, I think it's better.

gmku 09.08.2006 12:13 PM

I'll look for it. Thanks.

nicfit 09.08.2006 12:18 PM

oh,i've seen OvO a couple times live, strange amazing gigs.i suggest you guys to check "bachi da pietra" ,an amazing italian band (the drummer is the guy from OvO),here is the site

http://www.bachidapietra.com/
(i don't know if there are downloadable mp3s)....

edit: here is their record label site, with a downloadable mp3s
http://www.wallacerecords.com/mailorder.htm

.this label is AMAZING,i suggest to check some mp3s of other bands (a short apnea are one of my fav)

DJ Rick 09.08.2006 02:26 PM

I like that Ovo "Miastenia" CD mainly for the slow and sometimes folk-textured songs. The fast almost-powerviolence stuff is okay, too. The album's good, but compared to their live show I saw over a year ago in Oakland, it sorta pales. That was one of the greatest live performances I've seen in my life.

My favorite things on Load this year are the Impractical Cockpit "To Be Treated" CD and the forthcoming Coughs CD, due out 9/19. Don't miss that. It's even 200% more impactful than the last one!
