Hip Priest 09.11.2006 01:30 PM

Regrettably, I have to say orange again, for the same reasons as in the previous round. What can I say, it's a quality list.

i hate to be such a picky asshole here, guilty of food snobbery, but truly, could you cast out the glorious BLOOD ORANGE?

no! never! :D

Hip Priest 09.11.2006 01:34 PM

I know, my problem is that the fruit itself is inferior to clementines, satsumas etc in being both less tasty and more difficult to peel. Orange juice is lovely, and indeed I like oranges generally, but it's just the way it is.

Look at the rest of the list. If it had been clementines or satsumas up there instead, I'd have gone for banana.

I haven't seen blood oranges for sale in this country for some time, which is a shame.

Hip Priest 09.11.2006 01:36 PM

And one more thing, if I may be so bold (and I think I may): I'm not even voting for my favourites here, because they aren't on the list:

physalis
lime
raspberry
clementine
grape

And certain specific varieties of red apple should not be forgotten either.

HaydenAsche 09.11.2006 01:38 PM

Off with Apples.

exactly man.

here in the u.s. braeburn, fuji & pink lady apples are amazing

though in my opinon mango & chirimoya rule the fruit universe

if i was going to throw fruits into the trash bin, the RED DELICIOUS APPLE would go first. good only for fattening pigs.

Hip Priest 09.11.2006 01:44 PM

They're good choices too, and so is passion fruit (which I'd forgotten about).

Raspberries and physalis are my favourites because they suit both casual eating and serious preparation.

every time i discuss food with you british folk i end up learning a bunch of new names. last time it was "rocket" (arugula, it turns out), now it's "satsumas" and "physalis". by satsuma i think you mean a variety of mandarin? and then physalis is physalis peruviana (i googled it)-- i should know this peruviana! but i've never seen one. hilarious.

on the subject of peruvian fuits i'd like to offer the LUCUMA for consideration. it grows on a tree, it has this powdery orange flesh, and it makes the most spectacular ice cream flavor in the universe.

yes not too pretty but once transformed:

Hip Priest 09.11.2006 01:58 PM

One need only experience passion fruit to see that aesthetics and taste don't always match. I've never heard of lucuma - I'm pretty certain I've never seen them for sale. But, oh good lord, physalis are superb:

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmm.

!@#$%! 09.11.2006 02:00 PM

this looks like i might now it as a tumbo or no hm ...

CAPULI!!!!!!!!!!! (with an accent on the "i")

okay.

they grow in the amazon jungle. we don't see them much on the coast.

Hip Priest 09.11.2006 02:04 PM

Never seen them either.

!@#$%! 09.11.2006 02:05 PM

yes you have-- that's the "physalis" you speak of-- capulies [cah-puh-lee-ess]

Hip Priest 09.11.2006 02:09 PM

They look quite different, going by Google images.

Physalis have a brighter orange colour, and have that lovely leaf-lantern around them.

!@#$%! 09.11.2006 02:10 PM

fuck then i dont know what a physalis is called in the place where it grows.

but anyway... sorry for the confusion

i blame hunger

Hip Priest 09.11.2006 02:12 PM

I'm getting peckish too. We happen to have a punnet of raspberries downstairs. If you were here, you'd be welcome to share.

thanks, you're very kind. and you'd have nothing to fear; i usually temper my greed and gluttony when in the role of a guest, for the sake of good manners.
