so what is it about kim that you like?

Not starting a flame war or trying to be a dick but I'm just interested exactly what the reasons for her fanbase was.

I mean, in my opinion, she is the weakest musician in the band, her art has no complexity and her feminist ideals seem shallow and vapid. So what is it about her?

nicfit 11.13.2011 06:16 PM

r u jealous?

E. Noisefield 11.13.2011 07:18 PM

1. She's incredibly hot... before I got married I told my wife that I would fuck Kim if I ever had the opportunity. She consented.
2. Voice.
3. She's written some incredible lyrics, and vocal melodies, amelodic though many may be. She's a female Lou Reed with a better social circle (see LULU thread)
4. She's a kind person, and was gracious and humble and conversational when I met her.

Also, I don't think she's vapid. I think she's a dreamy, dreary art-school girl. I've known many of them. They may not be the quickest of human beings on the surface, but they have a lot to offer the world.

As far as her musical ability is concerned, yeah- she's not a virtuoso. She's passable. But she's still a brilliant musician.

jennthebenn 11.13.2011 07:41 PM

Attitude. Style. Creativity trumping technical ability.

Agreed, double agreed, and quoted for truth.

Hey Kim, I'm a rich-poor boy! Might I do the same??

ann ashtray 11.13.2011 09:27 PM

Eliminator Jr is about a girl that got raped. Kim's vocals are pretty sexy on that one though

ann ashtray 11.13.2011 09:33 PM

Take A Walk In The Park Shhhhit Yeaaaah

static-harmony 11.13.2011 09:50 PM

Just watch the 1983 Poiters performance of making the nature scene.

EVOLghost 11.13.2011 09:56 PM

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh What DON'T I like about Kim.

logicalharm 11.13.2011 09:59 PM

She's just very...herself. She's not the most talented musician, and she knows it completely and is unapologetic about it.

Mortte Jousimo 11.14.2011 04:32 AM

To me each member of SY is as important. I think in SY really is hard to say what certain invidual do in it. On the other hand I think it´s not totally impossible to replace anyone of them, maybe Thurston is the one that is not very easy to replace.

Pelle 11.14.2011 06:58 AM

Well, she's beautiful, makes great lyrics, poetry, art and play in the best fucking band in the whole world.
Nuff said.

themawt71 11.14.2011 10:08 AM

a lot of her bass lines are simple but perfect.

pajjr 11.14.2011 10:17 AM

Her voice is an irriplacable part of many of the best sonic youth songs in my opinion.... plus I saw sonic youth back in the day and they could not have been better.

E. Noisefield 11.14.2011 10:24 AM

I saw them "back in the day" (relatively) and recently, and many times in between. The era doesn't matter, Kim is as vital to SY as Thurston or Lee. She is an integral part of their sound.

Another Beatles comparison- sorry - but she's SY's Mccartney. No, it's not Lee. He's the Harrison... the musical genius who occasionally gets tossed a song to sing that blows everyone away. But Kim is absolutely essential for SY.

They couldn't replace her, no more than the Beatles could have reunited in the 90s without John. No more than Nirvana can reunite.

Mirzza 11.16.2011 03:20 AM

so what is it about kim that you

Title says it all really. What are you sick of in modern games? and what would you like to see in new ones?
Im famously sick of FMV, voiceovers, fullscreen-only games, busty elves, RPG and cyberpunk cliches etc etc. What about you?

EVOLghost 11.16.2011 03:55 AM

wow....these bots are really out of control...

_slavo_ 11.16.2011 05:07 AM

Tits.

knox 11.16.2011 06:54 AM

I think her "feminist" ideals are very solid and despite having an influence on her writing, she hasn't necessarily been writing them as a political statement, it's still very much art. I could totally relate to it when I was younger. Sadly, I often get this impression from SY fans, nobody has been listening to these messages. In general, people like the fact that she is herself. As for being the weakest musician, probably from a technical point of view, but I don't believe that is the most important aspect of it all. Her contribution has been essential.

kenning 11.16.2011 08:29 AM

She never claimed to be a musician, though she is half of a tight and interesting rhythm section. Listen to the break in "Kool Thing," e.g. Without a solid singing voice (some people just don't have a capacity for pitch etc), she developed a unique vocal style that suits the band and "her" songs perfectly. Some people don't care for it, but I think it is incredibly powerful. Her feminist ideals aren't clear to me. She negotiates feminism on multiple levels, in multiple ways. Her lyrics are often empowering, even for the fellas (like me). I think if you find them shallow and vapid, you are projecting your notion of what they are. She doesn't have a stance so much as a voice...if that makes sense. And that has a vast, deep, and substantial appeal.

kenning 11.16.2011 08:32 AM

Exactly. She yields her sexuality--takes command of it--against the shallow and vapid violence of mind and body.

I'm hearing what you guys are saying but I still don't have any changed stance on her. Oh well.

knox 11.16.2011 10:59 AM

Because her lyrics are not blunt and openly political, I think perhaps it's easier for me to relate to them, because I'm a girl? This was especially true for being a girl trying to fit in an environment that is mostly masculine, bands and rock music and whatnot, which I think is reflected in a lot of the lyrics. I don't think they are making feminist statements in any serious or academic way, just portraying how it can feel sometimes.

I think she plays a large part in molding the songs by voicing what's working for her and what's not. A Thousand Leaves exudes Kim to me, as does most of Nurse. On the other hand, I don't feel Kim at all on The Eternal.

I think you're right. I'm not saying that's the case here, but having "vision" is what separates an artist from a musician.

Aaaadrpk 11.16.2011 05:52 PM

I Love Kim Gordon

E. Noisefield 11.16.2011 08:46 PM

All other comments aside, I love Kim because she has participated in the creation of some of what I consider to be the best music ever made.

Jeremy 11.16.2011 09:46 PM

I'm with Derek on this one. She's always annoyed me way more than actually impressing me. She has written some decent lyrics over the years, but for the most part I hate her lyrical style and her bass playing is awful; Most of the time it's barely heard unless it's something Thurston or Mark wrote/played.

Sorry Kim fans, she's just never done it for me. I won't even bother saying more since most of you are pretty firm on her as it is.

~Jeremy~
