Lee interview for Rolling Stone
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne...youth-20111128
"Hoarfrost" is over ten years old now...underappreciated, right? Yeah, absolutely. Just sayin'. |
Do you think you'll be playing any of your Sonic Youth songs when you tour for this album?
I think so. I think we're gonna try and work up eventually some of the lesser-known ones, or older ones, not like the "Hey Joni"'s or "Eric Trip"'s, but some of the ones that really didn't get played that much. We're talking about a couple things right now. " Hmmm , wish fulfillment, saucer-like and genetic would be nice |
I'd like to add "Karen Koltrane" as well. I get giddy at the prospects, I tell you.
|
Genetic definitely. Paper Cup Exit. Actually there are no Lee songs I wouldn't want to hear.
|
Genetic, Hoarfrost, Skip-tracer for sure.
|
Wish Fullfillment and/or Genetic would blow my mind.

Well...I guess we won't be hearing any live SY for a while...
|
Karen trilogy (with a new karen song as the third part)
|
I'm pretty excited for the tour and his record. I really think it's going to be pretty awesome.
~Jeremy~ |
Karen Revisited goddamnit!!
|
btw, great to hear that there will be 8 full band songs and only 2 acustic.
|
pipeline killtime acoustic ftw!

Second, underappreciated is an understatement |
There was mention at some other thread that he performed "Hey Joni", "Eric's Trip", "Lee #2", "Rats", and "Karenology" in addition to the new songs, at Midi Festival in France. Already looking good, and it can only get better.
|
I like that he said, "songs that didn't really get played much"
I've experienced all the Karen songs and Paper cup exit and hoarfrost and Eric's trip live. I wanna hear the 'Dirty' songs that got relegated and hey joni and maybe rain king again which got ignored until the Daydream nation shows. |
I think Wish Fulfillment is a given. Whether solo or with the band is my question.
Lee#2 (now called Letter to Thom?) seems likely to me as well... I'd like to hear some Dylan/Neil covers... :D |
How 'bout a song from Television? Off "Adventure"? Heh heh.
|
I feel like yr all taking the probably breakup of the band a lot better than I am.

It won't hit me until it goes from "probable" or "maybe" to "official statement." Until then, I'm hopeful. It still could go either way. |
I'm also still trying to process it as a real thing. Part of me--the weird-ass
part--suspects this is just alternate timeline bleedover, and everything is really okay, and lalalala. Lee's solo album has come to save us all. |
I know it's not official yet. But it's safe to say it doesn't look good.
|
Agreed.
|
it just makes me really sad .I know we'll still have the archival releases or whatever. It's just that as an "end to an era" it really sucks because it's an era (for me, as an obsessive fan) that lasted for over a third of my lifetime.
|
Why would they lie to their fans though? I can't see what are the benefits for doing that. It's not as if their fans are all going to desert them if they reform.

I don't think anyone's lying, I think the band genuinely don't know what's happening yet. The things Lee has said in interviews recently have been very well judged I think considering the situation is completely out of his control. |
yeah, in sense, I feel like Lee is just as uncertain as we are. I hate to say it but I think Kim/Thurston hold the fate of the band right now. And I think it's amore of a "can they do it?" kind of thing. THey don't know that right now. Imagine if you worked with yr spouse and broke up. Can you continue to have a work relationship? Some ppl can and some can't. I think time will figure it out. But I doubt eitehr of them are in a rush to find out right now.
|
Their love of music will always continue :)
This year Thurston was saying he was hoping they could turn their sound totally around. by being able to go any amount of time without having to feel like sonic youth exists, the sonic youth "idea" or "mystery" will be resting fully underground like a cicada and could one day emerge as a new music entity. 2015 might be a little early. but i take Lee's mentioning of Radical Adults and the idea of "elder" humans making some of the most pure abstract and concrete statements around that something will happen someday even if it is just a new song. when it happens it would just by the nature of musical growth happening for them and all around them definitely be very radical and surprising to everyone. |

I belive that you are right. |
They have to play in 2015 just so they can finally say hello to that year.
|

I was thinking about skip tracer definitely. : ) At least Lee wil be able to play it then if not the whole band. As far as the possibly to-be-discussed-further later, if The Eternal is the final album by the band I think the most important thing is that Steve sounds so good on it and gets to create/stir into existence a massive amount of energy on each song, it's one of his finest albums, though there are lots of them. :) ;0
|
^this is the shit that makes me say that I seem to be more bothered than a lot of you.
|
SY deserves a break...so let's just let them have it.

oh my i would die on the spot |
I always thought Hoarfrost was great, can definitely see how many wouldn't feel the same though.
As I've said previously, personally I'm kind of glad that they're over, assuming they are, which does seem to be the case. I think they are all capable of better things as individuals than what sonic youth has been doing as a band over the past few years. |
Hey, I jsut remember something. I remember lee gave an interview like a year ago talkin' about starting to write new material for another SY album. I mean...it wasn't anything concrete...I do remember reading something like that.
|
oh shit

I rmember the band mentioning maybe a year or so ago that they were planning on writing new material toward the end of this year. This year is almost over. Something tell me they never got around to it. |
