What????? I'm on the Important Records mailing list, how come they haven't told me???????

whorefrost 04.07.2006 03:04 AM

christ, lee's a real record label slut at the moment... seems like there's new SY side projects coming out every week just now...

FruitLoop 04.07.2006 05:17 AM

Yeah these days it's easier to keep track of Merzbow's output than sy's side projects....

HairwayToSteven 04.07.2006 10:42 AM

Thanks for the heads up Moshe! I will probably order both those. I am just really curious about the disc that comes with "Road Movies".

whorefrost 04.08.2006 01:29 AM

the last two Lee things i've bought haven't been totally amazing so i'll probably give these ones a miss.. oasis of whispers is okay and celestial answer is good... drift was cool too...
best lee moment: BCM collab on PSI

These two items are now on sale on the Important Records website:

imprec087 Lee Ranaldo "Vancouver Ambients 1-4" 7" $9.99
- limited edition of 500. Each 7" is on clear vinyl and is packaged with
a screen print designed, signed and numbered by Lee Ranaldo

The sixth installment in Important Records' Arts & Crafts Series is this 7” from Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo, recorded with Alan Licht on guitar, Christian Marclay on turntables and William Hooker on drums.

imprec088 Lee Ranaldo "Ambient Loop For Vancouver" cd/book $19.99
- This mailorder exclusive book/cd is limited to 500. This is the only way that the cd is available. Each book is signed by Lee Ranaldo & Leah Singer.
This single track full length cd comes packaged inside of Lee Ranaldo & Leah Singer's book Road Movies. Road Movies is a collection of Lee's writing paired with Leah's photographs published by Soft Skull Press. Photos and writing done on the road across the globe.
Titled Ambient Loop For Vancouver the cd contains brand new guitar work from Lee. It's quasi-religious drone, a sacred work that is as sedating as it is chaotic. Totally brilliant modern improvised guitar work.

I've ordered both the 7" and the CD/book (oh great, now I'll have THREE copies of Road Movies) and have been told they'll be mailing today. But now I have to wait two to three weeks for them to arrive. :(

val-holla-ing 04.11.2006 11:55 AM

i'm so relieved to find out that these things are so cheap.

pokkeherrie 04.11.2006 11:59 AM

There's an mp3 sample on their site
http://importantrecords.com/sounds/imprec088_lee.mp3

I take it Vancouver Ambients 1-4 and Ambient Loop For Vancouver are different recordings? hmm, i already have road movies.

toxic johnny 04.11.2006 12:11 PM

I ordered both today as well... I don't have Road Movies yet so this is a great opportunity... I'm really excited to hear the CD that comes with it

I can't play the 7" for a while, as my turntable is fucked up, but I've listened to the Ambient Loop for Vancouver CD, and it is fantastic. I don't think it's solo Lee, there are Text of Light members (Alan Licht, Christian Marclay and William Hooker?) on there too, I think, and ambient ToL is a fairly good reference point for what it's like. "Glacial" is a good word too. If you imagine a film about Japanese fishermen, with lots of shots of gently rolling ocean waves, and then imagine the soundtrack to that as played by ToL, and if you like what you're imagining, then there's a good chance you'll like this CD.

I already had two copies of Road Movies before ordering this book/cd set, so a big question for me was "Is the cd good enough to make it worthwhile me having a third copy of the book?". Without any doubt, the answer is yes.

Moshe 04.18.2006 03:48 PM

Is the cd different then the 7''?

sonicl 04.18.2006 04:17 PM

I don't want to risk playing the 7" on my damaged turntable, so I can't tell anything about it. I don't think that it will be the exactly same as the CD, but I think they are related.

The info on the main label of the 7" is:

LR: gtr, tapes, edit, mix
Alan Licht: gtr on 3
Christian Marclay: turntables on 3
William Hooker: drums on 4

rec/mix Echo Canyon NYC
assistance: Aaron Mullen
label curator: Don Goede

A1: 1:07
A2: 3:46
B1: 4:40
B2: 1:04

The other label has a smaller reproduction of the screen print that the single is packaged with. The whole thing is in a clear plastic sleeve.

The cd is one track, 53:44 long, and comes in a clear plastic sleeve slipped in the back of the standard 10th anniversary edition of Road Movies. The label is a copy of the donkey picture that is on the cover of the second edition of the book. The only information that it gives is the title and that the cd is to accompany the Road Movies book

Moshe 04.18.2006 10:05 PM

Thanks :)
I jyst hoped they were the same so i wouldn't have to buy road movies again.

kingcoffee 04.19.2006 07:31 AM
