Where do you find new music?

It was embarrassing to look back on 2011 and see that the only albums I'd committed a lot of time to were by bands I already liked. Mogwai, Grouper, PJ Harvey, Boris, and so on. The truth is that I work too much and don't spend enough time on music, or anything fun really, anymore. Just because I'm old doesn't mean I need to become a walking stereotype. Sheez! :) So my new year's resolution is to become again the music fan I once was; to start going to shows again, experimenting with new artists again, and even buying physical albums (I only bought, like, two in 2011... both were from 2010 :) )

So I'm wondering if anyone would mind recommending some blogs or sites that keep up on new music. Preferably sites that look across genres and styles, s don't point me to some dubstep forum or something. Sites that post reviews of albums, or just keep track of new releases.

Ok I'll just say it- help me be hip again. New year's resolutions are sacred, so no condescension please. I admit fully that I am an out-of-the-loop old fart who is asking a [probably] younger generation for help. I know; sad right?

Thanks!

These are some of the blogs I used for my music, all of them are pretty decent. I have discovered lots of new stuff through them over the past year. I tend to use last.fm a lot, I normally get recommended lots of good stuff through it.

Blogs, distros + record stores and recommendations n shit from forums.

Also compilations are awesome.

^^^ those are 3 of my favourite blogs... there's a blog thread on this board if you can be bothered to search for it. also just check the listening, bandcamp and what albums have you bought threads.

is there a constantly-bumped "great releases of 2012" thread yet? if not someone should start it...

weedtemple is cool cause they write about UUUUUU.

SONIC GAIL 01.09.2012 12:11 PM

Here

Glice 01.09.2012 12:18 PM

I get sent a lot of stuff, which saves me the arse of looking. Plus I go to lots of gigs, which saves me the arse of sitting on the internet. Articles are helpful, but you're possibly not looking for the same stuff as me.

EVOLghost 01.09.2012 12:25 PM

^ same(as SONICGAIL). I enjoy looking at the what are you listening to thread...
Lastfm also works for me. That's how I found Nagisa Ni Te who I can't stop listening to at the moment.

No one talks about lamstonite. Thats cause i'm underground

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 01.09.2012 03:31 PM

the simple answer. I don't ;)

I just recycle through the new incarnations of all the old music, then I filter the bootlegospher, and if that doesn't get my fix I troll the back catelogue, but again, I am a Julian calendar dinosaur

Who was your favourite this year? I was gutted when Sophie Habibis went out.

knox 01.10.2012 10:03 AM

I would have thought this guy was younger than most of us.

Anyway, any new music I listen to comes exclusively from recommendations from friends with great taste in music. That saves me a lot of time.

SonicBebs 01.10.2012 10:22 AM

sophie was good, but i think she bottled it on the live shows

MishaB was good for a bit, but became dull

I know what you mean on both counts. I kind of felt that Sophie couldn't really do much about just being a bit of a torch singer. Probably better she went out early, rather than do what Janet 'shit' Devlin did and show herself up as the one trickingist pony that ever one tricked a pony.

Misha B will probably be on our screens soon enough - by a large margin the one who screamed 'I'm a pop star', but it did get a bit worn quite quickly. I'm hoping Johnny comes back as a Saturday night entertainer or something. He was ace.

Probably that Franky Cock-coza for being the proper prized bellend he is.

Don't really watch this shite to be honest but i had no option knowing about it with Little mix/shits being from South Shields. I preffered it when the audition format was there and it was a day out for the patients from mental wings up and down the country.

Oh aye, the early phase is great. A timely reminder that everyone likes the smell of their own shit.

In reverse order:

It's very easy to hide your online status; have you considered perhaps not being a fuckwit?

I don't need to be a man; I'm a 6"0' black woman with AMAZING boobs. I contribute boobs. I also contribute question marks to rhetorical questions.

Sincerity is over-rated, hence pithy ripostes (cf lrn2intrnt)

Dude - I'm am the asshole bandwagon.

I get suggestions from Derek and Sam of Ricky Eat Acid and we all 3 run a little "blog" where we post any new shit we like which is great because there's like 5 of us regularly updating it and we have expansive tastes.

This would be great. I think everyone who has alright/ passable taste on this forum should do this, then I wouldn't need to log in with any frequency.

EVOLghost 01.26.2012 04:51 PM

I wish I had an alright taste, but all I listen to is K-pop now....

Genteel Death 01.26.2012 05:58 PM

Apart from the internet, friends, books/zines, gigs and the odd thing I get sent, I am lucky to be in a job where 1) I am mostly alone in the office and 2) we have a relaxed policy on ''arty'' matters since it's a theatre, which means playing music while you're working isn't a breach of company policy. Unless you take the piss, of course. This also means that I often wake up and muic is playing in the background, I listen to it on my way to work, social gatherings etc. But mainly I am a curious and enthusiastic individual enough who doesn't have to worry about reaching the old age before my time. My music taste is not only alright, it's unstoppable.
