The Jesus Lizard

I really dig this band. I'm listening to Blue right now.

Vote. Talk.

noisemachine 10.14.2006 11:08 PM

atari 2600 10.14.2006 11:09 PM

They were a force of nature as a live band and damn good on most of their records.

finding nobody 10.14.2006 11:12 PM

David Yow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He was notorious for playing shows completely drunk and incoherent. It was not uncommon for Yow to remove his clothing during Jesus Lizard concerts, ending up completely naked by the second or third song. Considered a very charismatic man during live performances, Yow had the rare ability to transport audience members into a state of hysteria.
...
Yow and Scratch Acid recently performed a series of reunion shows in Austin (09/02/06), Chicago (09/09/06), and Seattle (09/16/06).

The Jesus Lizard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Their music was a scathing mix of piercing guitar, machine-like drums, propulsive bass guitar, and psychotic vocals, often reminiscent of The Birthday Party. Denison's stinging guitar often served more as texture or coloring than as a melody instrument, while the rhythm section's stops and starts were simultaneously precise and brutal. David Yow's frenzied, often incoherent vocals were quite unique, unlike anything past or present. David Sprague suggests that "Yow's disjointed couplets" are reminiscent of a "preacher speaking in tongues."[2]

atari 2600 10.14.2006 11:19 PM

I saw The Jesus Lizard many times...probably close to twenty or so.

Norma J 10.14.2006 11:30 PM

I never got to see them. Would have been an experience, though.

Listening to Bang now. And Shot will probably follow that.

k-krack 10.15.2006 12:01 AM

Not heard too much.. but they are fucking killer.

lowlife 10.15.2006 01:16 AM

Not too big on shot or blue. Goat, Liar, and Show are the best. I went through a year where they were the band I listened too the most. I saw them at Lolapalooza in 1995 and they were completely insane and drunk by noon. They were also the loudest band I had ever seen, they were way way way louder than Sonic Youth. David Yow jumped into the audience about a dozen times during the first song. It was really great

drrrtyboots 10.15.2006 01:53 AM

Love these bastards, wish they would come back for a little touring or something.

atsonicpark 10.15.2006 08:17 AM

Obviously, one of the best bands ever.

Their cd's in order from best to worst..

1. Goat
2. Liar
3. Head
4. Shot
5. Bang
6. Down
7. Show
8. Pure
9. Blue

I'd think.

I'm green.
One of my favorite bands.
I thought (stirred with rumors) that they were going to reunite for Touch and Go's 25th. I would've been quite upset to miss it.

I've picked up a few of their records over the years. Found Blue secondhand the other day, though. I like it, but I seem to be the only one on the net who does.

HaydenAsche 10.15.2006 10:38 PM

I haven't heard much but I'm not really a fan of what I've heard.

Tokolosh 10.16.2006 02:48 AM

Great band, especially live.

Everyneurotic 10.16.2006 09:57 AM

dumb question.

of course fuck yeah

alyasa 10.16.2006 10:10 AM

From what I've heard of them (mostly Liar), they are the reason Steve Albini was born. Which, incidentally, is a good thing.

Trasher02 10.16.2006 12:29 PM

Awesome band.

Cantankerous 10.16.2006 05:31 PM

absofuckinglutely.

greedrex 12.17.2008 03:38 PM

listening to LIAR right now
makes me want to destroy everything and then kill all my relatives
er maybe not

Derek 12.17.2008 06:08 PM

Still one of the greatest bands I've learned about in the past few years.

When you listen to each member of the band's parts individually, they really don't seem like anything special. But it is the way everything so perfectly coalesces and the amazing chemistry the members of the band so obviously have with each other that makes it amazing. The instrumental side slams together so perfectly and tightly and David Yow's vocals are just the sweet layer at the top. Seriously, can anyone name a vocalist that sounds like David Yow? The answer is probably no.

Seriously a very unique band. I was playing Goat earlier actually.

Derek 12.17.2008 06:11 PM

I also just remembered how I would always go for walks in the really hot Summer this year while blasting this band through headphones.

Pax Americana 12.17.2008 09:41 PM

Love em. They're doing a reunion tour next year, I think.

ZEROpumpkins 12.20.2008 06:04 PM

I got Liar on vinyl a couple of days ago. It's so good, Boilermaker is a classic.

gualbert 12.20.2008 06:14 PM

I think they're ok but not very good.
Perhaps most of the fuss is because Steve Albini is praising them for, uh.., a long time.

ZEROpumpkins 12.20.2008 06:23 PM

Didn't Albini break ties when they went major?

He and David Yow had some kind of war of words during interviews and stuff. They've since patched things up though, I believe.

Fair enough. Now that they're back, they might realise that they were a much better band on t&g

atsonicpark 03.08.2009 07:40 AM

the fuck?

gualbert 03.08.2009 07:56 AM

Is it true that Head is crap, and all the other record are great? (that's what Steve Albini says)

Toilet & Bowels 03.08.2009 11:10 AM

more or less, except head isn't crap

the ikara cult 03.08.2009 11:13 AM

i finally have soulseek again, so this thing is being queued up

I'm surprised that you're not more of a Tomahawk fan then. Duane Denison is the core of the group and is responsible for the shape of most of the material, despite what most Patton enthusiasts choose to believe.

atsonicpark 03.08.2009 07:07 PM

Yeah, I think they're boring. Patton is annoying on it. I can tell Denison writes a lot of the music but the whole thing just bores the fuck out of me.

atsonicpark 03.08.2009 07:07 PM

Norma J 03.08.2009 08:10 PM

Shot is a great record.
