husker du

was sonic youth influenced by husker du?

CHOUT 10.23.2006 12:35 AM

I've never heard them say they were. I read somewhere that they talked to Bob Mould about signing to a major since he had experience with that.

sonicl 10.23.2006 02:56 AM

They started around the same time and were both on SST, so I'm sure they would have been aware of each other, but I see no signs of influence.

guitarpro 10.23.2006 03:08 AM

Thurston maybe

BTW Husker Du great fuckin band

EvdWee 10.23.2006 09:50 AM

New Day Rising!!!!!! New Day Rising!!!!!!!

Dead-Air 11.25.2008 01:25 AM

I think Sonic Youth were influenced by how Husker Du fizzled down to a sad imitation of themselves when they signed to a major and swore that they wouldn't do the same. I believe they didn't either.

tesla69 11.25.2008 09:21 AM

fucking boring shit

baby bulldog 11.28.2008 11:04 AM

All the SST bands were probably an inspiration to the Yoot. The fact that these bands lived on floors and in vans and ate dog food to survive helped galvanize the entire scene. The 80's were rough. No internet or national "alt" genre existed for the freaks...you either knew by fanzine/word of mouth or you were lost.

Husker Du influenced Kim Gordon to grow an awesome mustache.

sarramkrop 11.29.2008 01:39 AM

I think it's a real shame that their 'seminal' status seems to have stopped a lot of people from really listening to them. They're sort of taken for granted as a 'key' band rather than, as Sarramkrop says, a truly brilliant one. Sometimes 'importance' can be a real barrier.

to.w 11.29.2008 07:05 AM

kool thing's demo name was "du 2"...

huskers on a motherfuckin' plane!

mrb 08.07.2009 02:07 AM

they were sort of an influence on sy if you count the fact it was bob who pushed greg to sign them to sst.

I'm looking forward to it...His last album was great.

Dead-Air 08.30.2009 09:15 PM

I can't stand anything Mould has done in forever, but Hart with members of GSYBE sounds at least interesting.

Greg Norton with the original hipster mustache.

New Day Rising is probably their best raw record.

Yeah, my main source was 120 minutes and the "College" top 10 chart in the back of Rolling Stone mag.

Andrés 09.02.2009 08:54 PM

Grant and Greg were onstage playing with the Meat Puppets a few months ago. It was an almost Huskers reunion.

Yeah the last album that did anything for me was that first self titled one he did on Rykodisc in '96. After that EVERYTHING has been a bust! Including that newest one! I really thought he'd be able to pull it off forever since the shit was HOT for so long. Then it came to a grinding halt.
