albums that you love that people would hate you for

i dont mean pop that you like in an ironic way but albums that are thought of as shit but you love

I love Elbows first album, really love it. its a beautiful album
and the 2nd Kings of Leon album is pretty dam good too. proper rock and roll

EVOLghost 02.08.2012 04:53 PM

I dig KoL up to Aha Shake, and a little after too.

EVOLghost 02.08.2012 04:53 PM

I kind of like Silverchair's Frogstomp and Neon Ballroom.

batreleaser 02.08.2012 09:52 PM

rick astley

Murmer99 02.09.2012 12:10 AM

I've occasionally been made fun of for liking:

captain beefheart
the beatles
R.E.M.
throbbing gristle
deerhoof
stooges

a few that come to mind... hardly ever a specific album though. I wouldn't call it hatred either... more often than not having malice towards someone for liking an album is complete nonsense. Tomfoolery.

Mortte Jousimo 02.09.2012 01:06 AM

Scorpions: Lovedrive and Animal Magnetism (I think also albums before Savage Amusement are ok, of course the greatest stuff they made in the seventies)
Genesis: Genesis and We Canīt Dance

Dude McDude 02.09.2012 06:44 AM

A rundown of disappointments:

Animal collective (they're either to hipster, or not cool anymore. It's a lose/lose situation)
Minor Threat (Not sure why i got flak for this one. I think it bothered this person that i talked about them too much. Sorry/Fuck you)
Booka shade. (Playing midi drumpads live considered uncool by narcissistic hipster DJ. Also fuck you.)
Anything by Cevin Cey (sadly underrated genius.)
Kyuss (to deathy according to middle class rastafarian bum wannabe.)
Polvo (too weird for a meshuggah fan. Figured he'd like the mathy aspect. I was wrong.)
Bobby Conn (Too "grungy". Go figure.)
Bobby digital (the song domestic violence was considered too sexist by record store co-worker. She was right. I still wonder how costumers recieved it, though.)
Stone temple pilots ("Elegant bachelors" according to Steven Malkmus. I really dig some off the stuff on the first two albums.)
Cannonball adderley (Yet another disapproval from record store co-worker. I still wonder how customers recieved it, though.)
Sonic Youth (Wild Flower Soul disapproved by a third record store co-worker. I still wonder how customers recieved it, though.)

fireworks is one of my all time favourite songs.

I lose!

louder 02.09.2012 10:50 AM

i love them too. a lot of people do. i think they're more respected than McDude seems to think.

All those are awesome...except Gristle and Beefheart. I haven't gotten around to listen to them.

E. Noisefield 02.09.2012 06:45 PM

i wouldn't say love but if Coldplay released a best-of with a specific playlist, I'd buy it and hide it under my pillow :)

I really only like a few of their songs, but I'm sure many would hate a girl just for that.

E. Noisefield 02.09.2012 06:48 PM

oh yeah and totally Animal Collective. Yes, there was a time when nobody would dare consider them "hate"worthy, but at this point all the cool kids think they're the lamest thing ever.

I'm also made fun of for loving the Flaming Lips. By soooooo many. Even close friends.

keep poppin pimples 02.09.2012 07:04 PM

yeah animal collective would probably be one for me too if anyone knew i liked them

Why do you think it's like that? So many people love so many bands that are just Animal Collective imitators. I'd say they're responsible for at least a third of the 00's sound. And if you count solo albums, I don't think anyone from the era has a better track record.

It's probably the shoes. And the lyrics. Oh well I still think they're great, as they were a decade ago when they toured with Black Dice.

I also like Black Dice.

because animal collective haven't made a thoroughly enjoyable album since campfire songs

Murmer99 02.10.2012 01:10 PM

Sung Tongs and Strawberry Jam are the only ones I can go back to. They're just an average band that I can tolerate sometimes. I don't understand why some people hate them. I also don't get why people love them either... to each their own I guess.

and I'd like to add another album to this thread. It's an album most people do not enjoy... and it's by SY! Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star. I understand it was a weird transition for them at the time, but it's one of the reasons I quite enjoyed this one. It has the first song I ever heard by them.. Bull in the Heather. I remember someone sending me a link of the video or something and I decided to check them out. When I listened to their self titled and confusion is sex it completely caught me off guard. Definitely didn't sound like the same band. I do agree that it pales in comparison to those I mentioned and many others but I think as a whole it still works. I even like how it starts off with an acoustic song... they took some chances with this one. The only issue I had was that thurstons vocals suck and there's no Ranaldo on the album.

dazedcola 02.10.2012 02:22 PM

some of my friends are too cool to admit that oasis actually have some great songs

Oh and Phish. ... I love Phish. I love every album except Hoist, which is terrible, but I have tons of their shows and I sometimes go on listening frenzies where they're all I listen to.

I know they're sometimes silly, but I think their music is actually quite challenging.

Black and Blue is also cool. DAMN people suck.

Goats Head Soup has Silver Train.........so, whatever.

it also has "Can you hear the MUsic".:)

It's Only Rock n Roll is pretty fucking cool too,.

Goats Head, itīs Only Rīn`R, Some Girls, Tattoo You, Undercover, Steel Wheels, Voodoo Lounge, Bridges to Babylon, I love them all! I think Black and Blue and Emotional Rescue is kind of weaker albums in the seventies but of course theyīre also enjoyable. But I agree many people, that Stones have their best period in Between the buttons-Exile -albums.

don't hate them, just think their influence has wore out.

i'd rather listen to Ruby Tuesday than Penny Lane.

I think the todayīs music will be very different without Beatles. For example Oasis is just a lousy copy of Beatles. And itīs very possible there hadnīt been even SY without Beatles. I think Beatles just change everything totally, itīs the first band who make popular music art. But anyway, if somebody ask me beatles or stones, I also answer Stones!

I can't stand anything by the Stones after the early '70s. The '80s were terrible for them, and even though they had a big "come back" in the '90s, the music was tepid and boring.

Still, I saw them on the Voodoo Lounge tour and on the Bridges to Babylon tour, and they rocked both times.

littlepriest 02.11.2012 01:31 PM

I don't get legitimate hate for this, but I like Korn's first two albums a lot, like a whole lot. I have a few friends that give me shit about it, but whatever, fuck 'em. Another one is Madonna's Immaculate Collection. Friends thought I was kidding, because I only really listen to noise. I wasn't kidding...

THere was a Korn revival? On a sonic youth board?

Glice 02.11.2012 07:30 PM

Yeah. Well, someone pointed out they weren't awful and a few people went 'yeah, they were alright, in fairness'. Back in the day.

The first 3 or 4 albums are great. I also like WFC.

I think Iīve heard some of those a long time ago. I have only The Last Record Album (I think itīs ok) and that live.

gmku 02.12.2012 03:42 PM

The Last Record Album is ok but it's definitely not their best. It's far inferior to the first few albums.

Why would anyone hate you, especially anyone here, for liking a great album by the band that this board is dedicated to silly? :)

gmku 02.12.2012 04:01 PM

EJST&NS is great.
