Xiu fuckin' Xiu

Everyone, talk about how much you love Xiu motherfucking Xiu.

Right now I'm on a XX kick, been listening to The Air Force non-stop, watching videos and shit (what's with allthe video game videos?! funny/curious) I still (always will) get melancholic listening to them, but they stir up immense amounts of "fucking genius" thoughts... I try and I try and I try, but I cannot even attempt to even sound like I am ripping them off (which I try to do...).

Goddammit, they are brilliant bastards.

schizophrenicroom 10.26.2006 08:40 PM

i listened to "fabulous muscles" the entire time during my vacation to california, so i have all of these sad songs attached to the happiest memories of my life.

they are indeed brilliant bastards.

HaydenAsche 10.26.2006 10:11 PM

Greatest band around today.

I'm seeing them on Saturday and I have backstage passes. I'm so excited.

My favorites are:
Knife Play
A Promise
Life and Live
Air Force
Fabulous Muscles
La Foret

Grade A music.

Everyneurotic 10.26.2006 10:37 PM

who?

just kidding...did you check out my interview with jamie? http://oscillatorzine.blogspot.com, scroll down.

atari 2600 10.26.2006 10:41 PM

That's pretty damn cool. Toot your own horn a little and start a topic about it for chrissakes.
(Maybe you did already and I missed it (after all, you mention La Foret)).
Or at least you should print it here, because sometimes people just are reluctant to click on links, as you know.

HaydenAsche 10.26.2006 10:49 PM

He was telling you to start a thread, every-n.

atari 2600 10.26.2006 10:50 PM

He's even touchier lately than usual. I think he misread me.

HaydenAsche 10.26.2006 10:51 PM

Yes. I'm fairly sure he did.

HaydenAsche 10.26.2006 10:52 PM

Atari,

Do you still want that Xiu Xiu comp and the Air Force? I haven't sent it because DaddyLikes still hasn't sent me an e-mail with his e-mail address in it but I will as soon as he has if you'd like.

Everyneurotic 10.26.2006 10:53 PM

dude, i've been misreading a lot lately...sorry man.

EDIT::there, now it's history.

thanks for thinking my interview deserves a thread of it's own.

atari 2600 10.26.2006 10:54 PM

No problem, man. It's only natural you would assume I was being a dick haha.

Yes, Hayden.
I was considering PMing Daddylikes for it because he owes me one.

I already have The Air Force now. I think it might be their best.

Cantankerous 10.26.2006 10:56 PM

i need to be reminded how to pronounce it please.

shoe shoe?

zedius 10.26.2006 11:00 PM

I like xiu xiu. I like the lyrics and the sound, I like bog people, I like the dingy bells and the autoharp. They are really awesome and I will buy their albums one day.

Everyneurotic 10.26.2006 11:00 PM

Shoe Shoe or Soo Soo.

atari 2600 10.26.2006 11:03 PM

I always thought it was "Zwee Zwee."

HaydenAsche 10.26.2006 11:04 PM

Nah. Jamie says it's never to be pronounced as that, though.

Everyneurotic 10.26.2006 11:06 PM

people might assume it's pronounced "kzeeu kzeeu", it's easier to understand in mexican spanish, since many prehispanic words are spelled with an x but have the "sh" pronouncement.

atari 2600 10.26.2006 11:07 PM

It also comes in pretty handy when you stumble across an artist with a completely unpronounceable name—like that of intensely emotional San Francisco-based band Xiu Xiu, whom, if this were a radio segment, would be right this minute correcting my almost-certainly-incorrect pronunciation of their name. So as a public service to Edmontonians who have been espousing their affection for “zoo zoo” or “tsu tsu,” Vue Weekly will now once and for all settle what has become the most frustrating conundrum for hipsters since the great !!! debate of 2003.

“That’s how we pronounce it,” says Xiu Xiu frontman and songwriter Jamie Stewart approvingly after I fluke out and correctly identify the band as “shoe shoe.” “But we’ve been told by, like, nine million people that we pronounce it wrong, and those nine million people have told us nine million different ways to say it.”

Stewart points out that he’s never found the inevitable mangling of his band’s name all that troubling, although he admits that one variation is a bit contentious. “I think the only pronunciation that we actually object to is ‘zoo zoo,’” he says, “just because it sounds like a bad hair-metal band.”

http://www.vueweekly.com/articles/default.aspx?i=2204

Well, I was kind of embarrassed too cause I tried to interview you after and I didn't realize there's all these PR things you gotta go through to set up these kinds of things. You made a list or something, and I sent it to my editor and nothing really came of that. So, yeah. About your sound in Xiu Xiu. "Shoe-Shoe," is that the correct pronunciation?

We usually say "Shoe-Shoe." Or "Shui-Shui" if we're getting really sleep-deprived. I think our only objection is "Zu-Zu." I don't know, we're not too particular about it.

"Shui-Shui" is the pretty much the same thing as "Zwee Zwee." Personally, I think that sounds better than "Shoe-Shoe" which sounds like you are being bothered by flies or something (shoo fly shoo). By the bye, I was the first person to ever mention Xiu Xiu (that I know of) at the old board. It was in a thread about new music and I wrote about them, Pretty Girls Make Graves and Film School way back in 2002. Most of the rest of the replies in that topic of yore were about debating the relative merits of The White Stripes, The Hives, and The Strokes.

Пятхъдесят Шест 10.26.2006 11:17 PM

I should give them another listen... I don't hear what all the fuss is about.

You probably were. I think I heard about them from you.

atari 2600 10.26.2006 11:27 PM

I sort of suspected that.

I just had a brainfart-variety thought that Xiu Xiu cleverly sort of pulled a R.E.M. (R.E.M. refused to show themselves clearly in their earliest videos and Stipe didn't sing the lyrics to their early songs all that clearly either) only Xiu Xiu did something similar concerning the "correct" pronunciation of their name. The moniker appears rather cryptic to begin with, but maybe they purposely didn't really put the correct pronunciation out there a whole bunch with the desired effect being a contribution to a sense of mystery about themselves.

HaydenAsche 10.26.2006 11:29 PM

Probably. I love them.

Norma J 10.27.2006 01:23 AM

What I've heard of them I didn't think was that good.

I always and will always read it as: zoo zoo

Same here. I listened to them (not an entire CD, just a few songs) and I didn't care for them.
But lately they've been popping up everywhere it seems.

HaydenAsche 10.27.2006 04:01 PM

nomadicfollower 10.27.2006 04:03 PM

The only song currently in wmp is entitled Pink City.

HaydenAsche 10.27.2006 04:04 PM

Pink City is just a noisier version of an old IBOPA track.

Try the following: Hives Hives, Over Over, Homonculus, Apistat Commander, Bunny Gamer.
