The Doobie Brothers vs. Michael McDonald solo

I'm takin' it to the streets to find out, once and for all, which was better:

The Doobie Brothers or Michael McDonald solo.

The Doobie Brothers:

Michael McDonald by himself:

Vote or Die.

Hip Priest 04.10.2006 05:27 PM

I'm not familiar with either of them. But the guy back left looks like he's up to something, or has recently been up to something, or is planning to be up to something soon, so I'm edging towards the group vote.

Savage Clone 04.10.2006 05:31 PM

I am going to hurt you.

Did I stutter?
Do you need me to talk louder, or slower?

noumenal 04.10.2006 05:36 PM

Savage Clone loves it when I start threads on awesome bands like The Doobie Brothers or Little River Band.

BTW, if you guys need me to remind you of some of their greatest hits, I'll post a recording of me singing them

noumenal 04.10.2006 05:37 PM

What A Fool Believes would be a good start.

Hip Priest 04.10.2006 05:41 PM

Savage, do you mean you're going to hurt me because I haven't heard the Doobies? Are they as good as The Bambi Slam?

Noumenal, that sounds cool.

Savage Clone 04.10.2006 05:43 PM

Sorry, directed at Noumenal.
For some reason I though HP started the thread.
Direct all threats to Noumenal from here on.

With his husky, soulful baritone, Michael McDonald became one of the most distinctive and popular vocalists to emerge from the laid-back California pop/rock scene of the late '70s. McDonald found the middle ground between blue-eyed soul and smooth soft rock, a sound that made him a star. He initially essayed his signature style with the Doobie Brothers, ushering in the group's most popular period with hits like "What a Fool Believes" and "Taking It to the Streets." McDonald disbanded the group in 1982 to pursue a solo career, which was initially quite successful, but by the end of the decade his popularity had faded away, since he was reluctant to work regularly and hesitant to update his sound to suit shifting popular tastes.

noumenal 04.11.2006 04:54 PM

I think McDonald's Christmas album gives him a slight edge.

HaydenAsche 04.11.2006 04:55 PM

Bahaha.

For some reason, I found that hilarious.

That's what I get when I search for Michael McDonald

Conspiracy theory?

Everyneurotic 04.11.2006 06:54 PM

jeff the freaking skunk baxter played with the doobies!!!

also, the sax player now plays with the larry davis experience, available for all celebrations in the town of springfield

noumenal 04.29.2007 02:37 PM

MellySingsDoom 04.29.2007 02:40 PM

CHOUT 04.29.2007 02:42 PM

I LOVED that episode. Didn't Raj get caught with a tape recorder in his pocket during the concert? I also think that was the episode where Dee was a smart ass.

It was Rerun, not Rog (short for Roger) though.
Ihad a friend named Raj though that moved out to sunny California, but, I digress.
Don't you just naturally get irked (& maybe involuntarily cringe a little) when someone uses the "I digress" idiom? Pardon me, I digress.

Hello, sonic pharmacist.

Prescribe more often, will ya?!

Ah, yes Atari, you are correct! It was Rerun. And, unfortunately for a lot of my friends, I cannot prescribe (that's up to a physician) :(

Post-Doobies Michael McDonald....Here's the deal.

The solo stuff was not so hot, but he excelled in duets, and as a background vocalist, he really helped take other people's music to a whole 'nother level, especially "Ride Like the Wind" by Christopher Cross.

Even what decent stuff he did solo in the 80's was completely crapped on in the recent years with that Motown covers album.

I have a strange fascination with the vocal stylings of this man, so it makes me laugh to see us talking about him on SYboard. When I'm at a diner or a drugstore or thrift store or any place where they play piped-in music over the intercom, I say it is not time to leave until you have heard Michael McDonald or Carly Simon. If you leave before then, your experience is not complete.

That song becomes completely unconvincing once you see photos of these two:

tesla69 04.30.2007 02:31 PM

The Doobie Brothers really got away with one of the coolest band names ever. I mean these guys were #1 week after week when I was a kid...

DJ Rick 04.30.2007 03:08 PM

SC, you got us all on that one.

Baseball caps and soul patches....the sure sign of douchie-ness.

matt g 04.30.2007 05:09 PM

ok, i voted for the db...
dj rick, i feel the same way, there is something creepy about how damn good mcdonald is... once you let it in it's hard to let go.

i didn't see this mentioned, but this is some funny shit:
go to the "you tube" site and do a search for "Yacht Rock"

DJ Rick 04.30.2007 06:49 PM

My strange fascination with McDonald stems from the fact that I have a pretty decent vocal impression of him.

!@#$%! 04.30.2007 06:55 PM

Yes!

haha

My best impressions are Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, (bassy) David Bowie, and Michael Stipe, although I can do all those Eddie Vedder-types also, but to a lesser extent.

I wish I could others as well.

It's amusing to me when I do Bob doing Lou songs or Lou doing Bob songs.
