I remember one of them dancing her butt off on the left side of the stage, when SY played at the Paradiso in 2004. :) Got it on video.

I've listened Baka Ga Kita and hated it. |
baka ga kita isnt really very afrirampo though.
its them singing along with pygmy songs. i recommend urusa in japan. it beats kore ga mayaku da by miles. |
they have a self-titled tape, its reeeally good.
im sure its a limited quantity thing thats out of print, but its easily found on slsk. my favorite by them. |
Definitely get 'Urusa in Japan.'
I haven't heard 'Baka Ga Kita' yet. I was going to wait and pick it up when I see them in December, but now I think I'll have to download it. |
self titled and A are basicaly the same songs re-recorded.
most of the sings are also on urusa in japan too, but the quality goes up with each. and the self titled and A do contain the best versions of one or two songs.....but urusa in japan is the way to go. |
I saw them on the Nurse tour too. Great stuff. They caught me off guard.
|
they were great at atp a few years ago.

Just found this interesting review.
Afrirampo Kore Ga Mayaku Da ![]() Afrirampo were always destined to make a dent on the mullet-coveting Hoxton set and the geeky indie boys. Two cute and sexy Japanese sisters, often wearing the shortest of skirts, jumping and shouting like petulant teenagers whilst thrashing a guitar and battering a drum kit. They are however, more than just a cliché or cash-in. Born out of the Osaka scum/noise scene in 2002, Oni (Guitars/vocals) and Pikachu (Drums/vocals) have more in common with the Boredoms than the irritating 5, 6, 7, 8’s, and have recorded with the likes of Acid Mothers Temple and supported Sonic Youth and Thunderbolt. They stand out as being fresh, exploring the spaces in between bubble-gum aesthetic and nasty lo-fi noise. The music and their act is made up of two warring factions – the dark, demonic, primal grunts and feedback against the softly spoken, cuteness and innocent squeals. This battle is ever present in the new release Kore Ga Mayaku Da. The record begins with a quiet chanting – so quiet you turn up your stereo to hear them. They then get louder until they are shouting at you. The music kicks in and they seem like your average proficient guitar group. This quickly breaks down again into feedback and poodle-noodling, and then again into grating Pokemon style chirping and catcalling. There’s something of Beefheart about the album, with extended improvised sections coming together with absolute precision and mastery. Pikachu’s drumming is just as erratic as her alleged sister’s guitar playing. Thundering drum rolls and complicated beats fight for space with lackadaisical banging, similar to a child sitting at a kit for the first time. On much of the album, the two sing together, occasionally in time, more often than not, one of them is making noises in the background. Afrirampo are not The Shaggs though. They know exactly what they are doing. They’re explicitly aware of the role sex plays in all this and the whole thing seems like a dangerously loaded tease, similar in mood to the climatic scenes of the Japanese horror film ‘Audition’. The name Afrirampo roughly translates as “Naked rock” and it seems to translate to their music too. On their website, Pikachu comments "Our's real music CuleCule stir japan Drop in River Nake. SOON OVER THERE STIRING. Every body Smile. Every body same. ONI also Supponpon (naked) brain rock sing and guitar! So amazing. "SUPPONPON ROCK AFRIRAMPO!". I don’t think I can say it better than that. Reviewed by David Rogerson |
I'd love to see them live. I have one lp, I can't remember which one. It starts off good but kind of loses direction quickly.

Ha! That is so not what that means. |
This band has zero appeal to me, despite my predisposition to like most things Japanese Underground.
I have tried and failed to enjoy this music. |

savage clone, did you check out urusa in japan?
if you only listened to kore ga mayaku da, you might get a nice suprise listening to urusa. if you already did, never mind. and according to the girls themselves, afrirampo means naked in osaka ben. despite the fact that no japanese person ive ever met from osaka or elsewhere has heard of this word. |
Haven't heard that one.
I am willing to give them another shot, but I was severely disappointed with the other stuff I was exposed to. |

I'm going to have to agree with this sentiment. I saw them once with the expectation of hearing 'the next boredoms' or some such nonsense and ended up bored half to death. I don't see the appeal whatsoever. |

when did you see them? |
april 2006. bad timing?
|
haha. actualy...yes. bad timing.
ive seen em loads of times since about 2004 and they went thru a bit of a crap patch just around the 1st haf of this year (in my opinion) most of the kore ga mayaku da album sounds improvised, and they were trying to recreate those songs on stage and it didnt have the same spark that made me like em in the first place. theyre rocking again now though. some new songs and a bit more fire than they had the start of the year. |
Interesting. I should probably give their recorded stuff a try before I pooh pooh them all together.
|
there is a vidclip on the sy archives of afrirampo and sy live in osaka, i think. its great. shot on hand held camera by lee. worth watching.....
|
![]() that's me on the left at afrirampo's showcase at SXSW 2006...right after pikacyu spit beer all over us crowdfolk. they put on one of the best shows i've ever seen and the expression on my face says it all. i luv them broads. |

i *think* that handsome bearded fellow standing behind you is yours truly. wax-- i retract my previous statement. its not exactly my cup of tea, but i enjoyed urusa in japan. |
Quote:
you didn't enjoy their set that night? |
I really like 'em. First saw them live supporting SY in 2004 (I think... GOD that was a long time ago), and was intrigued. Since then I've collected a few of their albums, I've got A and Urusa in Japan, Kora Da Mayaku Ga and Baka ka Gita. Urusa is probably my favourite, but I haven't given Kore much of a listen yet as I only got it a few days ago.
Great band! Like the Boredoms they have a really good blend of noise and silliness! |
new album maybe?
they have a new song up on their myspace. very good song. |
Just listened to A which I found average if not plain boring.
|
Yeah, Cryptograms is one of 2007's best albums so far.

I'll agree to this, and second SC. A is the only thing of theirs I own. I tried to give it multiple listens, and frankly found it boring and unimpressive. Perhaps my expectations were too high. But they're hot, I'll give them that. |
they're good. gets boring but yeah.
|
I've known them since I read an article about Cryptograms in "NYCGF-is-the-worst-album-ever" Pitchfork.
Not listened to their other stuff yet. I don't know if they've toured Europe yet but if they come in Paris I will try to see them. ('just had an look on their myspace, nothing scheduled in Europe for the moment). |
