The Velvet Underground
The Velvet Underground
|
It is clear that this was a band intent on aesthetic, and not commercial, goals. According to Sterling Morrison, the group “never had an agenda for success.” John Cale describes the members of the group as “anarchists — but anarchists with heart.” And Lou Reed recalls advice from Warhol: “Andy said to me, ‘Whatever you do, keep all the dirty words.’ Essentially he was saying, ‘Don't make it slick. Don't make it smooth and ruin it.’ And we didn't.” (Fricke 1995)

I can't imagine a world without them. Yes, yes, yes.
|
Hell yes!
|
hell to the yes
|
Yes.
Obviously. |
yes.
i fuckin love The Velvet Underground. |
In parts. Not as good as the Monks though. And certainly not as good as the Shaggs.
|
Anyone see the Vietnamese film The Vertical Ray of the Sun (2000, dir. Anh Hung Tran)? I think that each new day began with a brother and sister waking up to "Pale Blue Eyes"... Anyone do this to one particular song (not necessarily a VU song)?

"Who loves the sun? Not everyone." |
Yeah, there are gonna be a tons of yesses in this thread.
And I am most definetly one of them. |
vertical ray of the sun is an amaaaaazing film.
velvets are an amaaaaazing band, although not near as amzing after mr cale fucked off. |
Without question one of the most exciting, creative, under valued and most important bands of all time.
|
I appreciate them, but I honestly can't remember the last time I felt the urge to listen to them.
|
yes ofcourse the vu.
great music for doing a lot of things to, not all of them things to post here. |
|
no doubt about them!
|

Under-valued? Maybe that was true in the 70s. Everyone, and I mean everyone, I know who is into music at a slightly deeper level than buying records they saw on an advert on TV loves the Velvets. My mother has a copy of s/t. My Dad listens to the best of in the car. I think the 'most underappreciated' schtick is getting very tiresome at this point in history. They are still good (in parts), and although they aren't universally known like the Beatles or whoever, they are known to a hell of a lot of people. Now, the Monks, there's an under appreciated band. Or Michael Yonkers (thanks Drone). |
the velvet underground was a great band definetley. someone tell me who the monks are
|
yes but i'm sick of them.
|
Squeeze is their best album. If this sounds controversial,i don't care.

Which is entirely my point. Buy Black Monk Time or Five Upstart Americans. Do so now. German TV appearance Same appearance . Slightly more funky than their records More, also slightly gay. Oh, the drums. Featuring Mark E Smith, dancing badly. Hmm. I'm not sure that any of these show them in their rightful light. Still, they are utterly brilliant. |
i would say something but ill get negative repped for giving an opinion...
|
You mean an opinion like mine?
I find the VU terribly boring. No. No. A thousand times no. Have fun wasting your ears. |

watch out! Trasher02 going to negative rep you!! |
