Downtown
Well?
edited.
I think Emma Bunton brings a certain amount of Spice soul to the song.
buttown?
'DOn't Sleep in the Subway' is Petula Clark's best song, although it was nice to see series three of Lost open with Downtown on Sunday. Is that what inspired the thread?
I bet it was Emma Bunton that inspired the thread. Don't try to deny it. We've all had a crush on her at some point.
Okay, I admit it. It was Emma what done it.

Just me and sonicl then? |
Call yourselves cool all you like but unless you have heard the People Like Us's version you can sing Emma Bumton's praises forever.
Who called themself cool? I just fancy Emma Bunton.
EDIT: Satisfied? You MADE me say that. |
What's so special about this Emma Bunton character then? Is she a bit of a looker, as they used to say?
Don't pretend you don't know.
OK then. I'll pretend I do know.
Thank you. I do recognise her, but I didn't know her name.
Shes not as nice as Keisha from the Sugababes. |
Somebody destroy that cover ,please.
Right! You asked for this!
![]() EDIT - Is the same one as Pookie posted? |
Oh it's a charity single? She looks a little young to already be embarking upon a career rescue attempt.
You nasty little cynic!
When can we expect to see her on Never Mind the Buzzcocks?
The sleeve is a little too sexy for a charity record.Or might it be a desperate attempt at rescuing the remains of a career already in tatters?
I voted for Petula, by the way.
I have to go out for an hour or two now, but it was jolly nice talking to you all. I'm not in work today.
Pookie: it's been a while, eh? I hope everything is good. |
Always nice chatting to you Hip Priest.i voted Dolly Parton but it really was a toss between her and Petula as i love both versions.
Have a good day doing whatever you're doing, Hip.
this poll is missing the finnish version sung by danny, it rules!

Erm.....insert cello somewhere in the above picture.
Ooh, Emma Bunton playing the cello. Now that's something to dream about tonight. Thanks Porky.
booker t and the mg's. imagine how much fun that would be. there would be drinking, laughing and all kinds of mischief. i would be at the table with donald dunn and steve cropper.
i am gonna have this song inmy head all afternoon now! |
Dolly for me.
On the subject of Bunton, I didn't fancy her in the Spice days, but she's had a late blosomming which has led to me finding her very attractive indeed. Her music is still munting though. |
I haven't heard any cover versions of "Downtown" besides Sinatra's and B-52s and chose Petula Clark.
Songfacts: This was Petula Clark's first hit in the US. She was the first female singer from England to hit #1 in the US during the Rock era (after 1955).This won a Grammy in 1965 for Best Rock & Roll Recording, making Clark the first British singer to win a Grammy. In 2003, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for above 2)A British songwriter and producer named Tony Hatch wrote this. During the '60s, he wrote most of Clark's material, including her follow-up hit "I Know a Place" (which also dealt with city life). After the words, "And you may find somebody kind to help and understand you," there is the drum roll from Little Peggy March's #1 version of the French tune "Chariot." In 1962 Petula had a big continental hit with the same song, which was also known as "I Will Follow Him." (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for above 2)This was used for the soundtracks of the films Twin Town (1997) and Girl, Interrupted (1999). (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA) |

I must agree. Hmmm, I wonder how did I hear this version, hmmm? |
I'd like to hear the Dolly Parton and Booker T and the MGs versions.

When I used to go downtown a lot, I'd sing it the whole bus ride there and everyone would get annoyed hahah. |
