SY Snubbed by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Today, they announced that Van Halen, R.E.M. and some others will be inducted. Sonic Youth is eligible this year, now that their EP is 25 years old. I probably shouldn't care, but I'd like to see them get in. It could still happen. Van Halen was eligible four years ago.

HaydenAsche 01.09.2007 12:12 AM

I don't know if they consider SY eligible.

Who cares?

Magic Wheel Memory 01.09.2007 12:12 AM

Nevermind. These were the inductess for 2006, who were just announced now. SY will be eligible next year.

val-holla-ing 01.09.2007 12:38 AM

sonic youth probably won't ever get it, though.

fuck that! good riddance! and fuck the fucking rocknroll hall of shame-- what a sad fucking ripoff institution!

SynthethicalY 01.09.2007 01:11 AM

They should have the Music Hall of Fame.

hirsute_biped 01.09.2007 01:21 AM

they will get in, might take a few years, not that it matters that much...

PAULYBEE2656 01.09.2007 01:49 PM

isnt daydream nation in the american music hall of something or other. wasnt there a big deal made out of it? so what if they didnt get nominated. i dont reckon they care

James Blonde 01.09.2007 02:05 PM

James Blonde remembers that Daydream Nation album got chosen to American National Library (or was it Congress Library?) as example of 1980s music.

I went to the RnR Hall of Fame in Cleveland a few weeks ago to see a show at House of Blues and got free tix to the Hall of Fame, and to put it bluntly i was "sadly dissappointed" in the majority of it... the memorabalia aspect is interesting (being a guitar player) but the layout is poor, the use of such a large space is poor, the scope of the music is not done as well as expected... fuck they even had customs by some "non" rock n rollers in my opinion, (ie Britney Spears, Christina Aguilara, New Kids on the block...etc etc its like what do they have to do with the history of RnR???). I saw very little on SY, except for a them listed in a few gig posters in the "Grunge" section... Apparently they have so many items they are rotated on display, so i didn't see the Kim Gordon bass, or Lee's zither on display... so the Hall of Fame is overpriced and pretty much a joke. Right now they have a huge display on The Clash, which was one of the msot interesting aspects and i'm not much of a Clash fan.

musicfallinglikesnow 01.09.2007 04:04 PM

Rock'n'roll Hall of Fame. BIG MEH!
And to think Lou Reed got all teary when they inducted the Velvet Underground.
Some people surely are odd.
Well life is odd.

Savage Clone 01.09.2007 04:04 PM

Scott, isn't Cippollina's amp there?
That thing must be pretty cool to see in person. Totally ridiculous setup.
Still, I can't imagine going to a place like that and coming out feeling fully satisfied.

Rob Instigator 01.09.2007 04:35 PM

being recognized by your peers is ALWAYS a good thing, and always worthy of humble thanks

You wonder why Lou cried? Imagine yourself a junkie twenty something street hustler who lucks out and hooks up with certain people cale warhol, etc, who then allow you to pull your ass out of your hellhole and have a creative career, and then your peers consider you so good and think so highly of your music and respec t your music so much they want to honor it, WHY WOULD YOU NOT CRY?

sure it is not perfect, and the MUSEUM is a bit slapdash and wack, but the hall of fame is not the MUSEUM< it is the idea that the people on the list did timeless rock and spurred rock forwards. that is it and that is a good thing. sonic youth will get in. the sex pistols are in, and the rock establishment's most hated band, black sabbath, progenitors of metal ,something the rock people despised for a long time, are in.

sonic youth will be inducted. little richard and the old dudes may not "get" why, but rock fans will understand. I am sure elvis would have thought sonic youth and the clash and the sex pistols and the ramones were fucking trash.

it is a lesson i have learned from kurt vonnegut. noone has to ever give you any adulation or honors, and when people get together and decide you deserve an honor, just say thanks and be GLAD.

I would be glad for sonic yotuh, the ultimate rock/rock history-knowledgable band, to be suitably appreciative and not too overwhelmed.

Yeah what was the thing Daydream nation was inducted to? That was along with Stevie Wonder and other such things i seem to remember. It wouldnt surprise me if Sonic Youth got inducted into something like this, they are something of an institution.

ni'k 01.09.2007 11:51 PM

FUCK THAT SHITTY FUCKING HALL. who the fuck cares? who gives them any fucking authority on these kind of judgements? they themselves, and they are obviously a bunch of tasteless wankshafts.

If you are a rock n' roll band, by definition you should be saying fuck you to this bullshit institution. the idea of a rock n roll hall of fame is so fucking retarded.

I would bet money against that. Daydream Nation is one of a handful of albums in the Library of Congress audio collection! They might not get in the first year elligible, but it won't take long. It's the Cramps, X, Dead Moon, and the like who are likely to be ripped off forever.

pokkeherrie 01.10.2007 03:29 AM

Oh noes!!!1
tHurSt0n got pnwed by edDIE van HalEn and Peter Buck!!!111

eh, man, that's because lou reed always wanted to play football for the coach...

btw according to this article it's not the "peers" but dave marsh & co, together w/ the dead presidents, who pick the bands.

i say FUCK THAT SHIT. burn down the motherfucking place. a musical mickey mouse palace. for the record, i know you detest u2-- they were inducted in 2005. would you want sonic youth in such company? :D

this is all fucking wrong.

sonicl 01.10.2007 06:07 AM

I thought that this years inductees were pretty cool:

Van Halen
REM
Grandmaster Flash
Patti Smith
The Ronettes

Nothing to complain about there.

jon boy 01.10.2007 06:50 AM

maybe sy will be let in when they no longer exist.

Toilet & Bowels 01.10.2007 07:32 AM

so what's the difference between the rock n roll hall of fame and the hard rock cafe?

sonicl 01.10.2007 07:35 AM

Backpackers don't buy the t-shirts at the R 'n' R hall of fame.

porkmarras 01.10.2007 07:41 AM

The only people i've ever seen entering the Hard Rock Cafe premises while passing it by were backpackers with expensive mp3 players, european schoolkids, american tourists wearing chinos and japanese people with the latest cameras.

I haven't read the whole thread but has anyone quoted Kim Gordon as saying that being included in the library of congress list was more important to her than the rock n roll hall of shame?

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has some REALLY embarrassing members that the Hall claims are fantastic musicians. But they're not. Awful bands like The Bee Gees, The Eagles, Elvis Pressley, Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen, the Police and the Jackson 5 (who were not a rock and roll act at all). The idea of the Hall of Fame seems right until you realize that they let people in more for being famous rather than good musicians. I hope SY will someday be recognized by the R&RHoF, until then, SY can tell them to fuck off.

are you kidding? the HoF is not about great musicianship. they inducted the sex pistols after all.

the Bee Gees played from 1955 on, a LONG time. (they are OLD) and did not do just disco.
The eagles are , regardless of how you may feel, (and I HATE THEM!), the epitome of american classic rock. they were loaded with talented musicians.
Bruce Springsteen can put on a different 4 hour show every night and does with regularity, with rock music that is just as emotional, heartfelt, and honest as U2, who are also in the hall.
The Police were fucking FANTASTIC MUSICIANS! what are you talking about??????? they are fucking great as well.
elvis presley played guitar, piano, bass, and drums, he was never allowed by parker to do this in performance more than just a guitar, because it did not fit into the mold they had created. he was a fine musician, and his voice is an instrument and in that he was an outstanding musician.

the Hall also honors peoplethat were influences on early rock,a nd people who infleucned rock as it progressed. that is why someone like aretha franklin is honored. noone is claiming she ROCKS, you know.
