I went this evening and got a ticket. It was handwritten on a piece of paper! Did you go back for a ticket yet?

That is damn cool - best of luck! I hope that your participation means you'll be able to record the event and upload it for us to hear.

I haven't. Maybe I'll stop by tonite on my way to Issue Project Room. Thanks for the heads up.

Rhys has a lot of guts doing a tour in the midwest in the winter.

I didn't realize hearing the Ramones inspired Guitar Trio. who would have guessed!

sonicl 01.18.2007 10:21 AM

That's a pretty scary photo on the myspace page - he looks remarkably like Erasure's Vince Clarke!

Ignoring that for a moment, I'd be interested to know if there are CDs on sale at the show, and, if so, what. There are supposed to be a few new releases (as opposed to last year's re-releases) on Table of the Elements this year.

tesla69 01.22.2007 11:38 AM

I picked up a ticket yesterday, I overheard the manager say they still have a bunch if anyone needs one...

Inhuman 01.22.2007 11:42 AM

Woah. That's the best line up I've seen all year. Neptune, USAISAMONSTER, SY, Rhys Chatham...couldn't be any better, especially since most of them are playing together. I'm going to miss seeing Rhys Chatham this month becuase of school :(

Yeah I hope so too... though as I understand it, this short tour is being recorded for the Table of the Elements label, I think one of the plans is to document each show, and then some sort of the recording segment from each performance is to appear on a future cd release on the label. I'm not completely sure if this is the case, as this is the information that was relayed to me... we'll see...

my band was rehearsing the 'Guitar Trio' piece last weekend its rather straight forward, there is alot of subtle things happeneing around the variation of the repeating E chord (starts with one guitar playing the open E string riff, then into the E chord riff, then playing the e chord and allowing the open high strings to bleed into the riff) one guitar plays a lead like rhthym another plays a solid consistent rhthym that is slightly different than the lead creating a nice weird multi-layered effect. kinda weird and refreshing to play in standard tuning again after not playing in it for so long.

A Non-Event Podcast, featuring Chatham's Guitar Trio is
posted at: http://www.rarefrequency.com/nonevent/.

About the performance:

Written in 1977, "Guitar Trio" is Rhys Chatham's signature composition, and with good reason. The word "seminal" was invented to describe it. With a single, repeated chord, Chatham permanently altered the DNA of rock by splicing the gritty, overtone-drenched minimalism of John Cale and Tony Conrad with the elemental fury of the Ramones. The amalgamation was inspired. It energized the downtown New York scene throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, and made Chatham a founding father of the notorious No Wave movement. The influence of "Guitar Trio" spread even farther as former students and ensemble members carried its shimmering swagger into the rock mainstream. When Sonic Youth are inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame (and you know it's gonna happen), listen for some G3. It's there.

In 2007 Chatham returns (he expatriated to Paris in 1987) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "Guitar Trio" by performing it on tour throughout the US and Canada. And we don't mean it's on the set list; it is the set list. These will be no ordinary concerts, and the ensemble — will be no ordinary ensemble. Chatham will lead a band of all-stars in each city. The Boston show will feature David Daniell, Chris Brokaw, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Winston Braman and members of the Devil Music Ensemble. The concerts will also feature the original projections created for the piece in 1977 by famed visual artist and feature-film director Robert Longo.
The entire tour will also be recorded, with the choicest versions to be released on a G3-only CD. The title? It's obvious: Guitar Trio Is My Life.

"For years Rhys Chatham's music has been more heard about than heard. While his work languished out of print, disciples such as Sonic Youth have gone to the bank with his sound. Chatham's sonic vocabulary is an inspired marriage of minimalist structures, rock cadences and glittering overtones obtained from massed electric guitars played in unusual tunings at crushing volume. [His] knack for garbling indelible melodies in gorgeous sonorities makes them as attractive as ever today."
—Chicago Tribune

"Surging phosphorescence . . . Uplifting."
—Rolling Stone

just an update that Guitar Trio All-Stars hit Buffalo @ Soundlab last nite (Feb 1st) with a slightly augmented line-up as the one and only Mr. Tony Conrad decided to come down strapped w/ some vintage 60's sears roebuck guitar that required strings (so it became 6 guitars +1 guitar, bass and drums). once we all got settled in we rehearsed for about an hour, and it sounded good to rhys so we all felt confident so we all went out to get a bite to eat... upon returning to the venue i had realized that the stage looked like a music a store or an ad for Fender equipment, it has been the only time i've seen 5 to 6 Fender Twin reverbs on one stage at one time. We went on and it was great, Rhys got so into it that he became unplugged at one point (from his pedal tuner, luckily my bandmate realized it before he was entering into the next section of the piece and plugged him back in). It was became loud as fuck on stage, some really intense "shrill moments" ultra treble overload (as an unfortunate outcome my ears are suffering badly for it today) drums were barely audible at some moments, we didn't have the greatest monitors, though everyone in the audience i talked to said the sound was really "full". It was pretty awesome and quite the honor to work w/ Rhys who is an amazing guy and really nice and is totally into what he is doing, and he seemed quite pleased with the performance overall, hopefully the recording translated it well. i hope to post pics at some point soon...

Brooklyn’s Issue Project Room played host to a month long celebration of adventurous rock and improv, throughout January called “The Independents” festival. The space itself is incredibly unique. Two round structures, which in a previous life were oil silos, stand like sentinels in a compound, next to the Gowanus Canal. The spot is reminiscent of some art-vortex in the Netherlands. The mystique of the premises is furthered by a mysterious covered boat which made me think of Miami Vice, and a stand of young trees which made me think of Scandinavia. The performance space is located on the second story, up an exterior metal staircase. The round room had dozens of far-out speakers hung from the ceiling like houseplants. The capacity was limited to around a hundred folks at most, and the audience was often asked to sit on the floor.
Presented in cooperation with Tennessee-based Front Porch Productions, the festival featured showcases by Ecstatic Peace, Table of the Elements, Locust, Tompkins Square, XI, Pogus, and Family Vineyard. I was lucky to catch an evening during the final weekend which consisted of Neptune, Lichens with Alan Licht, and the Rhys Chatham Guitar Trio, presented by The Table of the Elements.
Unfortunately, I missed Neptune in this space but I was lucky enough to see them twice in 2006 in two other, very unique venues. The most memorable was in a 200 year old stone chapel at the University of Virginia on April 13th 2006. I can imagine how bad-ass their set was at Issue Project Room. Neptune has been around for over ten years, making their own electronics, homemade drums, and hand-welded Road Warrior-esque guitars. Now a trio, after many incarnations, Neptune has really hit their stride and continues to seem more inspired each time they play. I have included a recording of Neptune at the chapel on this page for listening pleasure.
The collaboration of Chicago based Lichens aka Robert Lowe (of the 90 Day Men) and minimalist guitar composer Alan Licht was striking and enveloping. Rob’s voice was heavily processed and soaring above Licht’s drone and ambiance. Sometimes reaching for falsetto registers, Lowe used his voice in a way seldom seen or heard, as he himself became a complimentary human drone. The audience sat rapt and attentive throughout the subtle shifts of the piece.
The Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Trio All Stars featured Rhys Chatham with Ernest Brooks III (Modern Lovers), David Daniell (Jonathan Kane’s February, San Agustin), Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth, Free Kitten), Jonathan Kane (La Monte Young, Jonathan Kane’s February), Alan Licht (La Monte Young, Jim O’Rourke), Robert Longo (famed visual artist, feature-film director), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Colin Langenus (USA Is a Monster), Byron Westbrook (Rhys Chatham’s Essentialist) and Adam Wills (Rhys Chatham’s Essentialist, Jonathan Kane’s February). They performed the same piece twice once with a hi-hat dominated ryhthm and a second time with more expanded drumming and layers of stunning black and white slide projections provided by Robert Longo. A building, overlapped with a shadow of a running man, a woman and her child, horses led thru a field, a plane and a lighthouse, light streaming down from the heavens, all stacked with thoughtful aplomb were perfect accompaniments for the piece. These images were from his 1979 series, Pictures for Music.
Each time the movement began with Rhys droning on a chord then one by one working from the outer edge of their semi-circular configuration, bringing folks in with a nod from side to side in stereo until eventually all eleven folks were droning the same chord in rhythmic variations. Accents and meters created phasing, discord, playful counter-rhythms, syncopations, and cacophony and eventually a very unified blissful wave of sound. The event had the feel of something unique and provocative, and I felt honered to be there.
