The Horn

What are some good pop-rock tracks that have a prominent horn part? I mean the "French" horn. All I can think of off the top of my head is For No One from Revolver.

The only thing i can think of now is that The Beach Boys always used a lot of horns... I'm sure they should have a song that features it prominent.

Yes, I guess that's a horn in God Only Knows. hmmm

pokkeherrie 01.14.2007 06:25 PM

yes it is, but it's not really prominent.

porkmarras 01.14.2007 06:28 PM

Neil Young's 'After The Gold Rush'?

pokkeherrie 01.14.2007 06:30 PM

that's a good one... all i can think of now are carpenters songs.

noumenal 01.14.2007 06:31 PM

Kind of, at the beginning, but then not so much later. (About God Only Knows)

Some of these "baroque pop" groups have got to have some big horn solos somewhere. Wait a sec, I KNOW, The Shining, the first track off of Badly Drawn Boy's The Hour of Bewilderbeast. That's a good one. Neutral Milk Hotel or one of those groups probably has something...

Hip Priest 01.14.2007 06:32 PM

The French Horn has definitely been used on some of David Sylvian's songs. Holger Czukay has played horn for him, amongst one or two others.

porkmarras 01.14.2007 06:33 PM

Isn't the solo on 'After The Gold Rush' a horn in the middle of the song?I'm thinking of a John Cale song.Lemmi think a little more.

noumenal 01.14.2007 06:38 PM

Yes, After The Gold Rush is a great example. I'm listening to it now. There is no horn player credited on allmusic.com, but it is definitely a horn. No question.

porkmarras 01.14.2007 06:40 PM

Help me.John Cale makes beautiful use of the french horn on 'Paris 1919' but i can't think of a specific song right now.

noumenal 01.14.2007 06:45 PM

The Neutral Milk Hotel I was thinking of is the title track from In An Aeroplane Over The Sea, but it's a flugelhorn or some shit, not a horn.

porkmarras 01.14.2007 06:46 PM

The Endless Plain Of Fortune? At the end of the song. That is one killer song.

Danny Himself 01.14.2007 06:49 PM

I know the psychojazz part in the middle of the violent femmes 'Black Girls' features a french horn, among other uncommon instruments like Jaw Harps.

noumenal 01.14.2007 06:52 PM

Why did I start this thread? I don't know, but maybe after enough tunes have been figured we can move onto another instrument. A mix would be cool.

porkmarras 01.14.2007 06:57 PM

Too late. The Boo Radleys's 'Lazarus' has horns on it too.

What's wrong with 'Lazarus' now?

noumenal 01.14.2007 07:33 PM

I'm pretty sure those are trumpets on "Lazarus".

porkmarras 01.14.2007 07:39 PM

Totally.I posted it because i knew but wasn't sure that someone would turn around and say that Da Radleys are crap or something.Good song but i've always prefered the remixes of it.

pokkeherrie 01.14.2007 07:42 PM

i guess you must like the proclaimers too.

noumenal 01.14.2007 07:44 PM

You just introduced me to the Boo Radleys. Not so bad, but then again I don't hate much music. Don't think I'm going to go run out and buy their albums just yet though.

porkmarras 01.14.2007 07:45 PM

Silverchair use alot of strings and brass in their music. Live these days they've stripped back to just the three of them and three horn players.

There's lots of good rock music with horns in it though.
