Russell Brand on Jonathan Ross
Some of you might not like him but he is hilarious.

it's called cocaine

I saw this episode. Russell Brand is like a spider, or something. Some awful black spindly creature of decay that you'd gladly drown and wash down the plughole.
|
haha.Danny, you have some strong feelings for the man there!
|
Russell Brand is at times phenomenally funny. He's at his best just improvising during conversations.
|
He is one of many 'comedians' Britain is churning out that I would gladly see die. Like I always say, better people have been shot dead.
Russell Brand, Lee Evans, Matt Lucas, David Walliams, The Mighty Boosh- all shite. It's people like them who steal the focus from the real original comedy such as Dean Learner and Vic Reeves. |
I especially love The Mighty Boosh very deeply, as it happens. Apart from them and Brand I'm inclined to agree with you.
Is Lee Evans supposed to be a comedian? Gosh. I remember when I found out Frank Skinner was supposed to be funny, and I have to say this news about Lee is almost as much of a surprise. |
The Mighty Boosh is great.I agree that Vic Reeves is a really good comedian but Stewart Lee is simply the best.
|
Vic Reeves was particularly when he was on QI last year, when he proposed we send Yak up into the atmosphere in hot air balloons to entice tourists to the 'vast sky fields of yak'.

He's a cunt
He's a cunt He's a cunt He's a cunt |
But thats not why i hate him, its because hes the biggest comedian in the country and he IS NOT FUNNY. AT ALL.
His one function is to be funny, which he does not fulfill, and the fact He's a cunt is just incidental really, but merits mentioning. |
Hmm,have you ever seen his stand up?Also, who's funny for you then?

I have not, but all he seems to do is nudge nudge wink wink, which is fine but he does it too much and he doesnt do it well. I dunno, maybe its just the lack of subtlety and understatement. I like Sean Lock, Bill Bailey, Bill Hicks (Hes probably similar but i think i find his personality easier to identify with than Russel Brand), Paul Merton. I like things that have a more surreal side, Russel Brand just seems to have very little imagination to me. edit: Although i do recognise that he's clever. |

While i can't see Brand's career stretching for too long,he is quite funny at the little he does and in that sort of 'chat show guest' kinda way.Hicks is definately a good call,Merton on the other hand is so-so.Personally,i find these to be the best: Chris Morris Lenny Bruce Armando Iannucci Stewart Lee Julia Davis Steve Coogan Rob Brydon |

I meant in terms of stand up but in terms of shows and stuff Armando Iannucci is probably my favourite. And Stewart Lee is a great stand up as well. Its interesting watching those youtube videos cos theyve got subtitles and im realising some of what he says would be very witty if it was somebody else saying it. |

I also enjoy Russell Brand. |
Hey Thomas! How did your gig go?I should have put Patrick Marber on that list too.Excellent writer too.

The above is true. I hate myself for using this cliche, but here goes: style over substance. He is the comedy equivalrent of Pete Doherty. It's almost irrelevant that he isn't funny, that's not the purpose he serves anymore. He's just trashy magazine fodder. File alongside Jade and whoever wins Celebrity Big Brother. |

How can you say The Boosh arent original and Dean Learner(Richard Ayaode) is? Sure, Garth Merenghis Darkplace was great and featured most of the boosh anyway, but Dean Learners recent show was terrible, to me he's just copying what Alan Partridge did 10 years ago. |
russel brand, wanker.

Too right about the lack of substance pookie but don't you think that he is the last person concerned about it?As i said before,he wont last for long because ultimately his palette isn't varied or that sophisticated enough to endure a long career or one that will be remembered in the future but for the little he does,he still remains quite funny.Wanker or not,i couldn't care any less. |
he has got the shelf life of an over ripe banana.
|
i fuckin love Russell Brand, i find him so funny. the shit he comes out with is off the wall humour which i suppose you either love or hate.
he's class. |
Russell Brand is an eminently slappable man. And punchable. And kickable.
His "humour" doesn't do much for me. But I am an old fart. |

Couldn't agree more. It's like Britain has a crisis at the moment where we have really bad comedy as well as really bad 'indie' bands just coming out all over the fucking place. Russell Brand can go fuck his dead dog. |

At the risk of invoking the ire of Brenda, I did have the misapprehension that Brand was a sack of arse until I actually was forced to watch one of his shows (other than that Big Brother nonsense) and I was entirely disappointed to find myself laughing at him. He's clearly a cunt, but he's quite an amusing one.
I have a friend who, like many of you lot with music, contends that you won't see the best comedians anywhere other than at small stand-up shows (although she has a soft spot for Stewart Lee). If I could be arsed to go to more shows I'd agree with her. And I wish I could remember the name of the chap who, in front of an audience of 12 (including the evening's other acts) caused me to physically piss myself with a joke about beating his wife because she expressed a liking for rabbits. |
No ire here, Brenda doesn't go in for ire. Your friend is dead right about the best place for comedy being at a small stand-up gig where audience and performer can see the whites of each other's eyes. I used to go to one in the upstairs room of my local pub, saw loads of great acts, quite a few of which have gone on to Radio 4 fame. Sadly the promoter gave up doing them because of lack of audience, but that was his own fault for putting on a three-month run of unfunny acts. I miss those evenings though.

Well after a couple of pints im quite funny, but i dont deserve my own show and a 20 minute interview on Jonathan Ross. And if he's entirely style over substance, then i dont like the style, quite apart from not liking the substance. |
I think you'll find that Russell Brand's entire appeal is based on substance(s). He certainly has fuck all style.

After a couple of pints? What has this got to do with anything? Most people are ridiculously funny when they're off their faces(well,a lot of them anyway) but i'm not sure what it is that you're trying to say. |
No, Porky, you've got it wrong. Most people are ridiculously funny when their audience are off their faces.
