lalie 01.15.2007 11:47 AM

I read the other thread, but no info about where these figures come from...
I'd really like to know.

mmm, not dim about the starpower part, I was looking at that myself, but you should take a closer look at what the best selling album is :)

lucyrulesok 01.16.2007 12:25 PM

ah i see.

so i AM dim after all!

sun city girl 01.16.2007 12:30 PM

at your comment.

greenlight 01.16.2007 02:22 PM

yeah, I saw those numbers on old board.
they're still selling tho, so numbers must be growing, is it?

pantophobia 01.17.2007 05:16 PM

those numbers do seem quite low, it's been stated in a couple of publications that Goo sold more then 250,000 (mentioned as a benchmark number for Nevermind upon release, ultimately passing that mark 50 times over), also Dirty is believed to have sold over 400,000 units by now, as for other albums i have no idea

and if people were wondering otherwise, SY did indeed receive a Gold Album, for the track they did with Cypress Hill on the "Judgement Night'' sdtk, in an interview years ago, Steve mentioned he kept his hanging over the the toilet at his House

Rob Instigator 01.17.2007 05:52 PM

those numbers are not that far off.

Washing Machine 01.18.2007 01:54 PM

Those figures are terrible! Sonic Youth are one of those legendary, mythic bands, you would think Daydream Nation (the holy grail of indie albums) would have reached at a 5mil mark. SY seriously needs a new record company. I could understand the problems of selling a record like NYCG&F (which personally I love, but a fan record really), but an album like Sonic Nurse or Rather Ripped could easily have been as big as their early 90's sales peak....Incinerate, that sounds like a huge hit single, are Geffen just deaf?

Inhuman 01.18.2007 01:58 PM

Geffen are just corporate pigs. All they care about is money. Game sold 5million on The Documentary, and he released Doctor's Advocate, and it's been 2 months and only about 350,000 have been sold, and the beats are more diverse. They don't care if he mentioned geffen one time throughout the whole album, and talked about aftermath every 3rd line, as long as they make a lot of money on it.

They also got a Gold Record for the alt. version of "White Kross" that was on an NME 7" in 1987.

Rob Instigator 01.18.2007 02:39 PM

that NME single was gold just because there were so many copies of the magazine printed. In the UK to be GOLD, a single has to "sell" 400,000 copies.

weird how in the UK for an album to gold it has to sell 100 thousand copies. for a single to be gold it has to sell 400 thousand copies.

here is a link to the charts

Nice, is that the one that has kim saying "She comes by to get me high" and Cypress starts with "Look who's back in the program..."?

Rob Instigator 01.18.2007 02:46 PM

judgement night. what crap.

that movie sucked ass.

the soundtrack was better than the movie but damn.

the only reason that soundtrack went gold was because every metal head bought it for the anthrax/public enemy bring the noise

which to my dismay is actually LESS NOISY than the original!
anthrax version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jECu7EefwRk

original public enemy kicking ass taking no prisoners version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ei0oZlyqboA

Richard Pryor on Fire 01.18.2007 02:49 PM

I like the low numbers it means all the records are rare.... I wouldn't worry about SY financially they all got there chedda.

I was watching Richard Pryor live in concert for the 30th or so time yesterday and I fucking cracked up again when he mentioned the cops siccing a doberman on a black dude in an alley and th dude was "low-runnin'!"

I fucking love that low-runnin' joke!

Richard Pryor on Fire 01.18.2007 03:31 PM

haha Yeah that's a good one, everytime I watch that one I laugh without fail.

jennthebenn 01.18.2007 03:43 PM

this is the tracklisting for the judgment night soundtrack, which i listened
to twice, i think.
1. Just Another Victim - Helmet/House Of Pain
2. Fallin' - Teenage Fanclub/ De La Soul
3. Me, Myself & My Microphone - Living Colour,/Run D.M.C.
4. Judgment Night - Biohazard/Onyx
5. Disorder - Slayer/Ice-T
6. Another Body Murdered - Faith No More/Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E.
7. I Love You Mary Jane - Sonic Youth/Cypress Hill
8. Freak Momma - Mudhoney/Sir Mix-A-Lot
9. Missing Link - Dinosaur Jr./Del The Funky Homosapien
10. Come And Die - Therapy?/Fatal
11. Real Thing - Pearl Jam/Cypress Hill

the dino/del should have been world-ending. alas. the slayer/ice-t collabo
was the best thing on there.

finding nobody 01.18.2007 04:22 PM

Dinosaur and Del's song was pretty cool too

atsonicpark 01.20.2007 10:57 PM

A... million? SY? HAHAHA!

Dead-Air 01.21.2007 12:44 AM

It is kind of weird to think that they are still rather obscure despite also being a household name. There must still be big chunks of the world where you can go for miles without ever seeing a SY record. Here in the NW, it'd be easy to believe they sold a lot more as most people I meet sure seem to have a least half of their albums.

timtimtim 01.23.2007 12:57 AM

all i could find that hasn't been previously said is that rather ripped debuted at 71 on the charts and it appears that they have no gold albums.

I wouldn't be so sure. I read recently that they can no longer afford to take their own PA on tour with them and have to hire locally.

timtimtim 01.26.2007 03:29 PM

Most bands don't tour with their own PA though because usually venues have their own PA

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 01.26.2007 05:23 PM

these numbers seem to be at least half of the actuals,

You think they've sold a million of "Rather Ripped" ? Not sure...

amyvega 01.26.2007 10:19 PM

ejstns was pretty heavily marketed, i think. i'm surprised washing machine didn't sell more.

but, those numbers look right.

yea but in sonic youth's case its just part of their sound so if thats true
than its a shame really!

pantophobia 01.26.2007 11:57 PM

if i remember correctly, they haven't been traveling with a PA since 02, maybe even since 2000

Derek 01.27.2007 10:22 AM

Shame that Experimental Jet Set Trash & No Star sold so much. I don't like that album.

Grodey 01.27.2007 10:32 AM

I'm surprised that Confusion is Sex even sold that much. Not that I don't like it, it just seems kind of high for that type of album.
