EMMAh 02.08.2007 11:13 PM

Don't like him...

timtimtim 02.09.2007 01:20 AM

never been much of a fan but I did kind of like "the rising"

The first two albums (Greetings/Wild, Innnocent) are real ensemble pieces with an excellent full band on fire going all-out and a young, rambling Bruce. Nebraska and The Ghost of Tom Joad are noteworthy stripped-down albums delving into dark storytelling and stark poetry. Tunnel of Love is a brilliant (as pop albums go) stripped-down effort too, and is an impressive & bold study of relationships. The Rising is barely edged-out by Lucky Town & doesn't crack my top ten.

I adore Nebraska for its stripped-downness and its excellent story-telling.

I like The Rising quite a bit. Espcially 'Lonesome Day' and 'My City of Ruins'. The album really suffers when Bruce descends into 80's nostalgia on 'Mary's Place'.

Unfortunatley, IMO, Bruce can't shake his own curse of his superstardom. Because he makes great music. There is no denying he has made great contributions to the Rock cannon.

I cannot hang with Springsteen in any way, shape or form. I hate his voice, I hate his style. I have tried listening to the supposedly "good" albums like Nebraska and some of the early ones, and I simply cannot do it.
Being a Bruce fan seems to have been de-stigmatized in recent years, and I am seeing more and more people with otherwise great taste expressing love for this music publicly. Get back in the closet!

Toilet & Bowels 02.09.2007 11:33 AM

tunes like dancing in the dark put me off ever making the effort, if someone ever plays me his records i'll give them a fair listen though

truncated 02.09.2007 11:36 AM

I have a pointed and mostly unfounded hatred for him. I have not listened to his entire repertoire, and doubt I will, but what I've heard, I abhor with every fiber of my being. There is no real reason, nor do I need one.

sonicl 02.09.2007 11:39 AM

Springsteen's been badly misrepresented by his 1980s big hits, but if you dig a little bit deeper there's a brilliant folk artist just under the surface.

truncated 02.09.2007 11:41 AM

Really? Let me take that under consideration.

Toilet & Bowels 02.09.2007 11:48 AM

apparently he's a big fan of suicide, which makes me think maybe he's not all bad

porkmarras 02.09.2007 11:54 AM

I gave quite a few of his records more than a fair listen but that voice simply puts me off+ the music bores me.He's good but not my taste. My,he sings like someone with hemorroids.

Palmer Eldritch 02.09.2007 12:36 PM

One of the most 'alive' live experiences i have ever seen. can't argue with that tingling sensation when it hits you. x

the ikara cult 02.09.2007 09:20 PM

I have to say some of the 80s hits are atrocious. But i saw this Joe Strummer quote "If you dont like Bruce Springsteen you dont like Rock and Roll" which i think is a good sum up.

hotbutterknives 02.09.2007 10:57 PM

i love joe strummer , i love rock and roll but i will never EVER love bruce springsteen...not that theres anything wrong with that...

MellySingsDoom 06.24.2007 08:21 AM

I love the "Nebraska" album. The Boss was one of those artists that 80's indie fans were told not to like. Cheesy 80's hits aside, Bruce has come up with more killer than filler.
