Nine New Stephen Malkmus Songs

I downloaded this concert and completely forgot about it until this afternoon. Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks test out nine new tracks January 20 in Portland.
MP3: Stephen Malkmus - Real Emotional Trash
MP3: Stephen Malkmus - We Can’t Help It
MP3: Stephen Malkmus - Dragonfly Pie
MP3: Stephen Malkmus - Merry Go Round
MP3: Stephen Malkmus - Baltimore Again
MP3: Stephen Malkmus - Walk Into a Mirror
MP3: Stephen Malkmus - Pennywhistle Thunder
MP3: Stephen Malkmus - Hopscotch Willie

And for anyone interested, here’s the full concert. It’s 21 tracks, and an excellent recording. I don’t know who to credit it to, but they’re deserving of praise.

They played a bunch of new songs at Maxwells last month, some really heavy tunes that sounded really good even with his voice all crusty from a cold.

WOW! Thanks. I probably shouldn't be listening to this and wait for the album, but fuck it, they're right here. Yeah, excellent recordings.

sounds positive because to be quite frank, his albums w/ the jicks have been progressively been getting more stale... he needs abit of a musical makeover or transformation, to kick that "we want pavement" monkey off his back.

I disagree. I've loved every album. Althought the first is probably my favourite... Any ideas for when a new album's coming out?

I actually really enjoyed "Real Emotional Trash". Some of the lyrics are distractingly retarded, but it's been like that for a while, eh?

I was surprised at how dark some of the album sounds. And there's some nice surprising bits in there as well as some intricate guitar work that occassionally teeters on wankdom but is usually pretty reserved. The songwriting is probably the best Malkmus has done since Wowee Zowee.

Good album!

fluxequalsrad 03.30.2008 08:25 PM

Although I prefer Face the Truth (its a huge grower), RET is pretty awesome. He sounds sad..:(.. and not like in a sad songs sort of way but in a depressed mid life crisis sort of way.

atsonicpark 03.30.2008 08:27 PM

Yeah... that's what I meant, it sounds real dark.. maybe not most of the songs themselves or the lyrical content, but the whole album feels like a downer...

Bollocks_to_Pop 03.31.2008 04:11 AM

I've been enjoying the album for a couple of weeks now. I'm gonna try to see him live at the end of April or May if I can.
