RIP Ornette Coleman
One of the very finest musicians has left planet earth.
|
I got to see Prime Time 3 nights in a row. With the 2 bass players, 2 gtrs, 2 drummers and Ornette on violin & plastic alto. Met the whole band & bought drinks. They were all real nice guys. Ornette himself was kind of tiny, I had expected him to be a big guy due to the great impact he's had.
Also saw Prime Time at the Paramount in Seattle with my soon-to-be wife. she didn't care much for the "insect music", but stayed with me anyways |

Oh damn. Yes this is very sad indeed.
One of two jazz musicians who I felt artistically and intellectually unqualified to listen to for many years before finally digging into his iconic discography (the other was Thelonous Monk). I still feel that claiming to understand or fully grasp Coleman's music would be hubris. He was a true pioneer of experimental music, and one of the founding fathers of the musical avante grade. He will, of course, be missed. |

wish i would have seen him live once. rip |
oh man, RIP!! the song Virgin Beauty just destroys me. cant remember the first time I heard it. but I heard it. long ago.
his music puts a smile on my face and I sometimes laugh out loud. or something there that is deeply sad. a extreme balance of both worlds. sometimes listening to his music is hard like staring down at a pin point, but once you're there, you're there riding a wave of vibrations. Coltrane had that period too. nothing intellectual here. I bought Free Jazz because of Ken Burns. |

it's been said a thousand times but it's all about Lonely Woman. basically, it's not what you hear Coleman playing but what you hear as a whole. sweet stuff.
