London vs. NYC music?

I was thinking about this earlier...which city do you think has a better indie music scene these days? I'm American, but I've only lived in London and not NYC so I really don't know much about what's going on in New York at the moment.

demonrail666 03.31.2007 02:31 PM

Probably NY, because it's not so dictated by the weekly music press. I'd say that there's more variety in London but that the quality isn't always that great.

fishmonkey 03.31.2007 02:45 PM

NY, no contest

Danny Himself 03.31.2007 06:18 PM

NY, definitely. London is a shithole.

Norma J 03.31.2007 06:25 PM

Music vs Music.

Which one is better?

Danny Himself 03.31.2007 06:33 PM

Definitely The Strokes.

Norma J 03.31.2007 06:39 PM

The Strokes vs Danny Himself?

Danny Himself 03.31.2007 07:19 PM

Their riff-layering skills are no match for my influential sexuality and intelligence.

Everyneurotic 03.31.2007 07:25 PM

from what i understand, neither; london is too poisoned with the industry that people have irreversable careerist tendencies, selling out is the point for most bands.

on the other hand, new york city is going thru a de-culturalization, with places such as cbs and tonic closing, among many others; again, there's this music business virus going around. practically, all the good musicians/bands/artists are being chased out to brooklyn, mostly.

but i can't say since i haven't lived or seen a scene developed from the inside in any of the cities. guadalajara is the future though.

Danny Himself 03.31.2007 07:30 PM

Spot on, everyneurotic. London is definitely in the stranglehold of the music business right now. Giuliani's NYC is definitely affecting the music too.

new york:
no neck blues band
sightings
blues control
heavy winged
double leopards

london:
grime & dubstep
i can't think of any good "rock" bands in london at the moment.

I can't really say I live in Cardiff. It is for the time being, a cultural wasteland...

Iain 04.01.2007 07:19 AM

C'mon, Cardiff isn't THAT bad. It's quite bad, but not quite cultural wasteland.

sarramkrop 04.01.2007 07:23 AM

London has much going on for it, but it's the negativity of people who profess to liking music that gets on my nerves. If you took old habits out and replaced them by more positive ones, the music would seriously benefit from it. Oh, and for fuck's sake, stop thinking of yourselves as the end of all creativity. It just makes it easier for work.

That's the attitude.

Washing Machine 04.01.2007 07:24 AM

okay its not That bad but still...

Im psyched that Wolf Eyes are coming to Clwb Ifor Bach anyway...

Its the 'Indie' nights that amuse me, when I request anything remotely 'indie' they never have it...Metros Indie night was the worst (well I should have known really)

sarramkrop 04.01.2007 07:27 AM

Take it upon yourself ,just to show them. Really, this is the most ridiculous piece of advice that you could get, but just take it upon yourself that things could be different. No need to just moan about it.

Washing Machine 04.01.2007 07:30 AM

You're right Sarramkrop! They are a difficult bunch but perhaps I can guide them to the light......and throw them in the furnace preferably.

Yeah, that should be fun. There's also the freenoise thing at the end of April with Yellow Swans, Evan Parker, Metalux, Spencer Yeh et al. I'm am really looking forward to that.

If you go to Metros of your own accord you get all you deserve! (I spent a New Years eve there...the only time I've ever been).

Indie nights are always going to be rubbish on the whole. Having said that, I went to Uber Alles at Callaghans last night and, while it was mostly rubbish, they did play Mr Your on Fire Mr by The Liars followed by Mote.

Metros can be fun I suppose in that paying rip-off prices to watch people pissing themselves, throwing up and getting their arse kicked by security way...
