Anyone from London here?

I'm going to be in London for about a month this summer, and I'm looking for a place to stay. I know its a big city and that crime can happen anywhere, but are there any particular parts of the city I should avoid?

Also, know of any good hostels?

as for hostels, try the camden inn.
it couldn't be more central, it is clean and comfy and is only around £12 a night.

Most of central london is OK.

Avoid boroughs like Newham (no reason to go there anyway), areas like Harlesdon, certain parts of Hackney.

Most parts of London have their slightly scummy areas, but keep away from visibly run-down residential areas and you should be fine.

Good social spots you might want to check out are Shoreditch, Notting Hill, Camden and Soho.

Avoid 15-year-olds, they may just stab or shoot you!
That's what I hear anyway.

Check out Covent Garden - it's where one of the Rough Trade shops is. The big HMV on Oxford Street has a pretty good range of stuff too, if interested.

I could turn Elton John into a profitable figure, if i had to.

Tell me the obvious.

MellySingsDoom 04.01.2007 08:52 AM

Dammit, leave Elton out of it!

The obvious? I'm old and have dodgy teeth. Now how's about a cuddle, young man?

sarramkrop 04.01.2007 10:59 AM

London is better than New York. If is ay so, it is.

avoid the area of london known as cockney. its full of young vagabounds who all look like pete doherty.

MellySingsDoom 04.01.2007 11:05 AM

Everyone should avoid Hoxton too, unless you like your lifestyle totally Mexico.

Ha, I thought this said 'know any good hospitals?' lawl

I don't know where you're visiting from but one thing you should bear in mind is how expensive London is. Food and drink can really eat up your budget if you aren't careful. Chains like Stockpot in the West End are good for a decent and cheap no-frills meal.

Hounslow: its the nearest place to the airport, its also the the place you want to get away from
