great gigs you intended to go to but you missed

Reading the posts about great gigs and the recent shellac shows I was wondernig if anyone has any good stories of gigs that they had intented to go to but then missed?

I have two: I missed SY on Brighton Beach in '85 (the 'walls have ears' show). I worked in my parents restaurant in Brighton at the time but as the show was at lunchtime, a busy period in the restaurant, they wouldn't let me go. I still harbour grudges to this day!!

The second was about 15 years ago. I lived in Somerset and with a few friends drove the 120 or so miles to London to see Ornette Coleman. We got stuck in traffic on the motorway and had to do a detour across Swindon before high-tailing it to London. Even though we knew we would miss most of the gig we decided to carry-on and at least catch some of the show. Anyway, a mad dash across London, parked up, got to the venue, breathlessly ran up the stairs to the auditorium only to hear the final applause from the last encore and the audience drifting out. Apparently it was a good show too! (We did get a refund though).

Anyone else with a good tale to tell?

I missed that one too, because I'd never been to a gig on my own before and was scared to do so. I was living between Chichester and Portsmouth at the time, and the journey to Brighton (all 40 miles of it!) seemed a very long way to go alone.

Hell, you're that old, boys?

(sorry for rudeness)

:)

There's nowt wrong with being a grumpy, old fart. At least we can bore you young 'uns about how we saw 'the Youth' doing DDN back in '87 and '88!!

Did you get to the brighton beach gig the next year? May 1986? I managed that one - it was in the evening this time so no work! Psychic TV should have headlined but pulled out so SY topped the bill.

sonicl 05.24.2007 07:50 AM

Hmmm... You've got me wondering now. It may have been the 1986 one that I didn't want to go to on my own.

I got offered to see sleater kinney 3 times, but I never got into them until they split up :(

Sisters of Mercy's Albert Hall gig in 1985 I wanted to go to but couldn't because I had an English A-level the next day. Looking back, the A-level has done me no good whatsoever, I should've gone to the gig.

Bauhaus' and Japan's final tours came to my town, but I couldn't afford a ticket.

When I was in Baltimore, I intended to see a Cat Power show and a Do Make Say Think / Fly Pan Am show, but I decided not to go.

I chose to fly home a week earlier.

I missed one of SY shows at la Cité de la Musique in 2005.
The reason is their previous gig, well, the one I had witnessed was so great I wanted to keep that one in mind. When eventually I deciced to purchase a ticket, it was already sold out.

Something similar had happened 10 years before, but I hesitated at the time because money was a-lacking. And the gig wasn't that good was I told.

I missed the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion gigs in Paris for his three first albums - money. I can't tell you how mad I was.

I missed one of Mercury Rev's first dates in France for Yerself Is Steam. I didn't want to go because the Levellers were headlining. A bit silly.

I had tickets for, but missed seeing both the Ramones (tube trouble), and Husker Du (car trouble). Though, to be honest, both were way past their prime by that time anyway.

Incidentally, the Damned were supporting Ramones, so a double miss.

Miles Davis in late 80s. (Might've sucked anyway I keep telling myself.)

every-e- cheap trick come to daytona at least once a year for a free show but i've alway missed it.

i will be missing melt-banana because they canceled their solo show and are opening up for tool.

only in retrospect, in 1992 i passed on a chance to go to cb-gb to see COC (corrosion of conformity), opening for them was some unknown LA band, Tool. my friend was at that show, but missed tool since he didnt want to bother with shitty opening bands...

i had tickets to see Billy Idol and opener the cult(if i remember right) at MSG, the show was cancelled because of either asbestos in the building or billy o'd on heroin, i forget the real reason...
