Does anyone know when Kim started playing bass?

atsonicpark 07.15.2007 03:22 PM

flophousefloozie 07.15.2007 09:13 PM

just a couple years before SY actually formed, i think. i remember reading in one of the little SY books i have that thurston had her listen and play along to some dub to help her get better since she hadn't been playing for long.

that made me laugh out loud.

i know there's no "right" way to play an instrument, but come on. she is a boring crap bassist with nothing interesting or noteworthy happening. she fills her role well enough but who cares.

Yeah. And that bassline in the middle of Kool Thing..? Genius.

she's been playing longer than i've been alive, so who knows? she could be the ygvwie malmsteem of bass, but since it's not called for in SY's work, why would she show out? the most defining characteristic of one's musical ability isn't to flex that muscle, but have the ability to hold back when totes awesome shredding is necessary (and is it ever?)

plus, she, along with the other dudes, introduce extended method into their playing, which dwarfs the sonic capabilities of fast fingers.

hehe funny comment. sometimes I'm asking why you're always (most of the time) so negative about sy. it's punk/rock, init?

neptuneg 07.16.2007 03:21 PM

That is actaully bang on. Thank you for that.

I ask because I've been learning to play for a little while now. Yeah, I'm female, just like that girl. I started playing guitar like 6 years ago, but didn't keep up with it, so I felt disappointed that I've let myself come to this age without actually doing what I felt like (which happens to be the hobby of playing bass). I started thinking "Kim must have been at least like 5 years older than me when she started playing". You know, a little inspirational I should say.

And yes, most of her basslines are quite simple, and I'm indeed thankful for that, because it gives me a chance to learn songs that I know by heart and LOVE, you know? Makes the learning process a lot easier! (Thank you Kim Gordon). Think about THAT, all you haters! (by the way, I'm joking).

flophousefloozie 07.16.2007 05:20 PM

If Kim played bass like Thurston and Lee play guitar, it would be an entirely different sound, and therefore, Sonic Youth as we know it, would cease to exist. Everything would be imbalanced. The Universe would crumble, for Pete's sake.

atsonicpark 07.16.2007 07:45 PM

i joke around a lot.

dunno if you noticed.

flophousefloozie 07.17.2007 06:31 PM

Oh, I noticed. But I know alot of people would be serious, you know.
