More noise?

I usually don't post much on this board. I check it from time to time as I'm intersted in what's going on in the Sonic Youth Universe. However, i read every now and again complaints about the music Sonic Youth is releasing nowadays, and those complaints are usually about how there's not enough noise these on the more recent albums. I just gotta say, have you listened to the records at all? I mean, sure, Confusion Is Sex is a very noise record, but apart from that (and I know you fucking kids are not refering to that record) Sonic Youth have been more or less keeping the noise-level straight on all records. Maybe Dirty was a little noiser, but no one seems to admit to that. Fuck, the latset albums are at least as noise as they ever were, so fuck you. I'm drunk.

you can tell.

Er? Um? Quoi?

"Noise" is not a synonym for "good".

_slavo_ 08.12.2007 08:22 AM

noise is good for ya.

it's not really my impression that people are disgruntled by the lack of noise on recent albums...

if anything, i'd say it's more a lack of potent, punky, high energy, mosh-riffy songs compared to their older days. there are no silver rockets, catholic blocks etc. on the newer records, they're more mellow. were we supposed to expect something else? kim, thurston et al. are the same age as my parents, i wouldn't expect them to cook up such stuff when they're hitting fifty.

i like and enjoy listening to their latest records (particularly nurse and ripped), but you have to listen to them on their own premises so to speak. you shouldn't compare everything with sister, DDN or dirty even. thank god they have evolved and changed their sound over the last twenty years, right? :)

Well said my friend.

repped

Pax Americana 08.12.2007 10:34 PM

I'm not sure how anyone could claim that there's just as much "noise" on Rather Ripped as there is on their previous efforts, but whatever. SY don't need noise to make their albums good, they just need to make interesting music. Rather Ripped just dissapointed a bit, at least, it dissapointed me a bit.

SynthethicalY 08.12.2007 10:47 PM

I like RR but I am more pop-oriented.

scott v 08.13.2007 09:45 AM

well basically its obvious that they have gone for a more straight ahead clean toned guitar sound on most of their songs and then will blast at you with distorted crunchiness as needed within these songs... that is especially evident post-Dirty-era.

tasteinmen 08.13.2007 12:30 PM

I like their recent stuff just as much as the older stuff (even though all albums are pretty new to me), it's nice to have a bit of variety, and you definitely get that with SY.
