Should I see Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks?

So Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks are playing in California in a couple of months and was wondering if it would be worth seeing. I own Slanted and Enchanted and Crooked Rain and really enjoy them. I know though that his solo stuff isn't quite like Pavement. How does his solo stuff compare?

atsonicpark 10.04.2007 05:54 AM

it's boring.

i saw him play twice, once was really good, once was really boring.

if i were you i would go see him. i would love to see him play live and think his solo stuff is pretty good if not as good as his work with pavement

I saw Pavement once, Malkmus twice. Both Malkmus shows were at a festival and I walked out both times. I like (most) Pavement, but all the rest Malkmus has done has always bored me.

If being a fan of S+E and CR, CR is your main reason for going then I'm not sure if you should go. Why not listen to some Jicks stuff first?

The Jicks rock! His solo work is, to me, a logical extension of what he did in Pavement, except with musicians who can really play. he plays a mean electric guitar these days, too. I've seen the Jicks in NYC 4-5 times and they never failed us. I don't like every single song they do but I hav really enjoyed their gigs.

I got in a fight at one Jicks show, so you know they kick rule!

The Jicks rule! I would definity go to the show.

Yeah I'm gonna borrow a couple of their cds from my friend to listen to and see if I like them. Wanted to know what other people thought though.

i never come in this forum, but this was the current thread on the main page and i haaaaad to offer a VERY EMPHATIC "FUCK YES".

i saw a string of shows in january and he was playing 90% new material, the sickest most fucked up jammed out tunes he's ever written. they have janet weiss on drums now and she brings so much extra kick to their sound .. it's rare that i see a show and wait for the 'new' songs, but by the 3rd show that's pretty much all i was doing. the record's not out til next year but i would absolutely go see him if you have the chance. shitloads of fun./

SM is a great guitarist, tho i always thought he needed a second guitar underneath him, like Pavement. Not b/c he can't do it alone, but a three piece doing longish guitar solos gets a tad empty and a bit boring too..

But defintely go see them. I saw them in Philly last time ound and it was excellent.

Bollocks_to_Pop 10.05.2007 08:30 PM

I listened to one of his solo cds last night. It was pretty good. Think I'll see him since it's only $20 and it'll be the only concert I'll probably see that month.
