or lack thereof.

Is it just me or do you get the feeling that most of the bands that are hailed as the "next best thing"* wont be around for long and share the same two album expiration date as most main stream pop groups.

*the next "nirvana" for those of you who are stuck in the 90's and might as well not exist at all.

And interestingly enough so many 80's groups are still around.

Either that or they just seem to fade into the background, still selling out smaller venues but not really getting huge amounts of of airplay or attention...

The lifespan of a trend:

Underground -> Hip -> "Big Break" -> Popularity -> Overexposure -> Out of Style -> Retro -> Nostalgia -> History

It's a media thing. The media need a feeding frenzy to keep people buying their product, so they have to keep hyping new bands. The bands in question were generally shit all along, should never have had the attention, and will simply die a natural death.
