Bands that are total outliers in comparison to your favorite music

im sure some people here have a vague idea of what i listen too genre-wise(punk rock in its various forms, ditto indie, ditto metal, noise, jazz, hip hop, funk, blues etc). But there are some bands i like that dont really seem to fit into the scope of what im into. Two bands like this i worship are Guns n Roses and Iron Maiden. Appetite for Destruction might be in my top 5 for alblum ive listened to most over my life. Anyone else have soft spots for bands like this?

screamingskull 12.10.2007 03:34 PM

embarrassing bands that i like

The Jackson Five
Foo Fighters
Red Hot Chili Peppers
No Doubt

I love to hear Simon & Garfunkel. No lie. Something about the way they constructed songs and bridged the different parts of their songs kicks my ass every time. I am not much of a folkie in any respect.

I like the Pet Shop Boys and collect all their 45 RPM singles. They hate rock n rolll. I live for rock n roll. but I love their tunes. Can't help it.

generally-derided 80s pop, like....

Duran Duran
INXS for the first three records (then Listen Like Thieves and Kick after)
Men At Work
Def Leppard

Yes, while not something that I listen to all that very much often, Duran Duran's first three are dynamite to this very day. My INXS faves are The Swing and Listen Like Thieves. And this isn't my first time writing as such. I have some nice Duran Duran live stuff and an INXS Paradiso '84 on which "Original Sin" cooks like nobody's business. Pyromania by Def Leppard is still okay I suppose if one is in the right mindset.

None. I know it's indie to say (or unindie now? Who knows) but I like a bit of everything. I listened to SlipKnot self-titled a shit-ton last week, and I'm listening to YMCK (8-bit J-Pop) right now; it's all sound, who cares?... 99% of bands have SOMETHING to like about them. So, no, I don't think anything stands out about my tastes. Whatever.

I think that being self-conscious and slightly ashamed of whatever music you like is more indie and mediocre than just embracing whatever records you enjoy. Hat off to atsonicpark in this case, as having varied taste leads to better things than getting paranoid about what you like.

Agreed, its shit to think "im so embarressed about liking some band", although its true that sometimes you do listen to things with preconceptions which cant be helped (If Razorlight put out a new single tomorrow and it was introduced to me it would have to do a hell of a lot to eliminate the bad feelings i have about all their other music) but i suppose thats a different avenue of discussion

Sometimes I wonder why I have Belle and Sebastian records. I don't recall how I ever discovered them, but they're entirely dissimilar to any other bands I listen to regularly. I'm not embarrassed, though.. its not a guilty pleasure. They're very good.

My appreciation for Springsteen and Simon and Garfunkel also makes little sense if you're thinking about what scene I'm generally attached to by other people's eyes.

I'm at the stage where this is true for me as well.

PAULYBEE2656 12.11.2007 09:51 AM

nah, i cant say anything stands out... all the music i like is for one reason only.... i like it! so if something stands out its someone elses problem not mine!

i am not a mettaller or a goth therefore am able to see outside the pidgeon hole of genre container units.

PAULYBEE2656 12.11.2007 10:12 AM

ok, maybe a-has scoundrel days is a bit different to my usual taste and it still is on my shelf.

atari 2600 12.11.2007 10:14 AM

I don't have that one anymore...(a-ha), but I still have Scritti Politti's Cupid & Psyche '85. Dug it out a few months ago whilst getting effed-up.

SuperCreep 12.11.2007 11:56 AM

John Fahey.

Inhuman 12.11.2007 12:02 PM

Oh man, John Fahey is soooo good!

My soft spots? I enjoy Belle & Sebastian, "We have the Facts" by Death Cab for nostalgic reasons, and I like Eminem's first album because of the excellent production on it.

I only listen to 'True' Norwegian Black Metal. I therefore only own three albums and would surely shoot myself were I caught listening to Cradle of Filth.

holy shit demonrail that picture on your post is amazing!

as is your commitment to true norwegian black metal, I myself only own one and a half records and would crucify, hang draw and quarter and then shoot myself if I were caught within earshot of someone talking about listening to cradle of filth.

(sounds of hammering, sawing, squelching,a bit of moaning then a gun shot)
