Do you have any good hip hop acts to share or discuss with the board?

concept artist Coro created this cover

is that a hip-hop record or a death metal record? i can't tell by the cover.

avantgarde1 12.14.2007 06:57 PM

lol, basketball jones was originally by cheech and chong, that shit is hilarious! lauryn hill is a racist cunt... fuck that bitch. as for hip hop, way to many to list. i probably liten to hip hop as much as i listen to "rock". just check out my myspace top friends for good shit.

there is no distinction between hip hop and rap. they're the same person at different stages during life.

if you want to make a distinction, that's fine, but the reality of it is that that so-called distinction is more marketing than anything else (but isn't that what rap is about now anyways?) and your "distinction" is more or less handed to you by record execs who know nothing about how rap started or got to how it is now.

new ghostface blows (as far as he can blow), meaning my faith in hip hop is blown unless 8 diagrams restores my hope, or when new mf doom and clipse joints come out.

avantgarde1 12.15.2007 05:58 PM

i really liked the new ghostface, but the new wu-tang is shit (but we all knew it would be). DOOM can do no wrong in my eyes (much like SY).

I understand ripping on other artists to be one of the most controversial notions to be found often in rap. Is it popular in hip hop? No, I don't think so...
???
Do you have some link you can provide to support your challenging statement? I dare not google up possible slander for the sake of believing what you have to purport here in this thread at all.

I've asked it before, but I'll ask it again:

What are the most major differences between rap and hip hop?

In my mind, I have it simply organized that
rap=offensive/aggressive/negative/chest-beating tendencies,
hip hop=community-building/enlighten/illuminate/happiness.

(and on that note is Snoop Dogg hip hop or rap? Tricky?)

I seem to remember Eminem gave the best defense for rap's typical aeffrontery in 8mile. I am not sure how to describe the taste in my mouth after seeing it, however. Maybe I could use a bubble bath.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauryn_Hill#Controversies

Allegations of Racial Statements
Another controversy involves supposed racist statements. It was alleged that Hill at one time made a statement similar to "I would rather have my children starve than have white people buy my albums." MTV has publicly disclaimed the quotation, and after a discussion of the quotation on The Howard Stern Show, Hill herself called in to the show to refute it. Hill has repeatedly asserted in interviews that the rumor is false, that she never made such statements, would never make such statements and that she is in no way racist .

not to mention, that bitch is just cracked out now.

batreleaser 12.15.2007 06:07 PM

ghostface is just putting out too many alblums. fishscale is the best hip hop alblum of the millenium, i said it, better than madvilliany (by only a lil lil lil bit tho), better than hell hath no fury, those are the top 3 me thinks. anyways, more fish shoulda been released as a mixtape, cuz it wuda been a killer mixtape instead of a shitty alblu, and on the new one, the length is sorta short, the beats a little weak, i just played it through without really thinkin "wow" at any point, on fishscale right when that beat on shakey dog kicked in, i was hooked.

I'd make a distinction between the two. Like you said, different eras, or "stages during life" as you put it. I see rap as being more of the sound that was around in the 80s, early 90s etc, and hip-hop to be more of the sound after that, to current day.

Although, I'd call, say, Arrested Development hip-hop, and Public Enemy rap. Both the same time period. Most stuff sounds more in line with the former these days.

Neither wrong nor right.
